June 3rd might be the better day. It might even be warmer in June. Tides on June 3rd for Portsmouth are: High - 2:04 PM and Low - 7:44 AM and 7:42 PM. Who do we need to contact to visit the Lab and gardens on Appledore out at the Isles? If we could anchor and raft in Gosport and borrow a dingy maybe we could visit on Star Island. If someone could tow a dingy out there we could go on land. They will not let anything longer than 12' tie up to the dock. We could make the Isles more interesting than the last time. What do you think? |

Vink, I am very good friends with one of the top dogs at Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island. I will ask him about visiting the facilities and garden. One of the best ways to see the island is to sign up for Volunteer Weekend, but lucky for you, this event took place this past weekend, so you are free and clear until next year. :) |

Vink, Appledore Island is open to the public - no problem wondering around and checking things out. My friend wasn't sure about Star Island, but he didn't think that it was open to the public. Your best bet would be to call them. He also mentioned that Smuttynose Island has a sandy beach and is open to the public also. We could always hang out there and fire up a BBQ or something. |

Star Island is owned and managed by the Star Island Corporation. The island is used as a religious and educational conference center and is private. |

I called the Star Island Corporation here in Portsmouth. I asked the question: Q: "Can a person or person(s) tie up a small Boston Whaler and visit Star Island during the day without prior permission" A: During the conference season (Mid-June to Mid-Septemeber) you can dock a dinghy at their dock and walk around the island. As long as you don't park a large vessel and come at night or off-season all are welcome.

Since I have not been to either place, I support the choice of the group. In case other ideas are desired. I was thinking of going up river, Great Bay and beyond. (I like going inland or someplace calm since all my boating is open water) CBO |

We could take a slow cruise up one of the rivers. That's no problem. Then we could picnic again in Great Bay. I've been up the rivers and seen a lot of nature. I'm sure that Great Bay NH knows more about this than I do. Would we all be able to get to Newmarket? There used to be a cute eating place right on Main Street up from the river. We could also go up river to Dover. There is everything up from the boat ramp and marina in Dover. I'm game for most anything that my boat is capable to handle. I'm just throwing out suggestions. |

Hello All, Phil, thanks for the email heads up. I was wondering when things would get rolling again. I've had a busy spring as I'm sure most have. I'd love to join you on the 3rd, and will try to work the logistics to get the Revenge and her crew up to Elliot, ME for that Sunday. Hopefully have more luck than last year. If things don't work out, and I can't get the boat up then, I can offer my services as an Able Seaman to a willing Capt. and his vessel. I'm good with lines, have a strong back to handle that Piscataqua current during launch and retrieve, and most importantly, I make great ballast. :-D |

Vink, Newmarket and Dover are very doable. The challenge when getting there is finding a place to tie up. I know last year someone contacted George from George's Marina in Dover and he promised some transient slips for us. If that could me secured it may be worth the narrow , shallow, trip up the Cochecho. Newmarket is a favorite run of mine but the town landing is a joke. Last trip up to Newmarket I docked at an unmarked private landing and jumped the gate. We walked up to the Riverworks (the eatery you were thinking of perhaps?) and had a great lunch. Upon our return to the boat a local informed us of the nature of the landing we had used and pointed over to the town landing. It was half sunken in the water and looked very unloved. I questioned even my small boats ability to get to it without hitting bottom. We thanked him for the update and motored off. If the ocean is uninviting on 6/3 I say we do an inland run. If the weather is awesome then the Shoals is as good as it gets. At least in my opinion. I grew up in the Great Bay area so going to any of the inland towns by boat is nice but I'm not doing anything I couldn't do by car once I get off the boat. The Shoals, well, I aint never driven there. -Seth |

I had spoken with George at George's Marina last year and would be glad to do so again. vink nailed it...the Cocheco is a great nature run as well. The river has changed a lot in the past 7 years: much cleaner, beneficial dredging, and some magnificent homes. If Phil behaves, I'd be glad to show everyone 'Eagle Point' where we have a family of 4 bald eagles. They are magnificent, and oddly predictable, so they're pretty easy to locate. This spot is only accessible by boat. So, are we all in agreement on 6/3? |

I'll check on slips for this weekend, but with the horrid April weather, many boats remain unwrapped and we should be fine. A couple of things: I will be trailering down to Elliot and hope to be there by 8:30, launch by 9. Cat Boat (Matt) You are more than welcome to crew with me since I will be solo and trying to behave (Brian has thrown down the gauntlet). Nate - Have you talked to any of the gang (Hobie, boberi etc) to join you coming up? Do I need to email that group again? Ryan - Piscat is like Merrimack but has a much stronger tide. It is worth you coming up. Ramp is only a couple miles off of I-95. (see post below for directions) All - why don't we try to meet the guys from the south at the outer buoy at 10 and then go back up river. |

I don't think I will be travelling up from the Merrimack by water - it adds a lot of time and gas to the trip, so I will be traillering up and meeting you guys at the ramp. If the weather is good I will bring the family. I like the idea of a cruise up river and a cold brew and sandwich at a local spot. I better renew my Boat Us traillering insurance just in case! Seth....How do you launch for free at Piece Island???? It has been a pay ramp (sometimes the honor system) for the last couple of years!! Anyway I would rather not fight the current and launch in Eliot. BUT...my real question is......what is the scoop on lunch? Do we brown bag it again and raft up river or try to walk to downtown Dover? I don't remember how long the walk would be. My co-capt has a difficult time on a long walk. |

vink, RE: Peirce Island Launch Peirce Island is free to all Portsmouth residents of which I am a card holding member. They put a dock in last year but with the current and tides it is sometimes better just to beach it like old times (I've only had to at dead low tide). I agree Eliot is an easier ramp but for me it is the difference of trailering across state lines (I'm wanted in Maine! j/k) for what seems like 10 miles in tourist laden traffic to pay money when I can simple carry the boat on my back down the street to Peirce Island. Also, to my great surprise, I've never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes to launch at Peirce Island when/if there is a wait. Usually the dock is free of boats. It could be just my luck thus far so I won't say anymore and jinx it. RE: Lunch. Peace out, Seth |

All - Great to see some new names in for the gig...and I'll confirm the extra slips with George Maglaras tomorrow. Don't know about all you, but IMHO Memorial Day Weekend was incredibly slow. I think the high gas prices and crap April prep weather gave weaker boaters the excuse to sit this season out! BTW, as regional CW Forum rules dictate, first timers and Whalers newer than 1989 must sing the Shaeffer Jimgle at lunch, so start practicing. For all the birders / nature lovers, make sure you have your killer zoom lenses with you in case the bald eagles cooperate. Phil - my first mate is recuperating from a tonsilectomy, so he's 50/50 at this point. He really wants to attend so he can bust your hump. |

All - we are all set for the slips on Sunday. They'll be looking for us around 12:30ish....keep the fingers crossed for the weather! As for Seth and other newbies...the lyrics go... Shaeffer, is the, one beer to have when you're having more than one..... Shaeffer, pleasure, doesn't fade, even when your thirst is done. The most rewarding flavor in this man's world, for people who are having fun.... Schaeffer, is the, one beer to have when you're having more than one.... Not very PC for the 2000's.....but classic back in the late 60's in NY. |

Low 50's, heavy clouds, light rain and a cold wind) Seth, sorry to say you really did miss a good time. For historical purposes, Nate was not the first to arrive, rather he was LAST. Why he was last, I will not tell. All of us know the sorted story. My thanks for each of you that made it. Allan, you get the special award for coming all the way from Vermont.
