We usually do a west coast FL rendezvous in the early fall so I have the where and when. I was thinking either south Sararsota/venice area which has nice blue water and good beaches/restaurants, etc. I really think you would love this area which is mainly ICW protected waters but inlets lead to the gulf. Very scenic and pretty and home to Mooch, the resident Dolphin. This would make an AWESOME 1-2 hour cruise, not just sitting on a beach all day which we will do later. Or how about Tampa bay/Alafia river area? Dave Neal lives there and says there are a few good bars/restaurants and it is very old Florida-ish. Might not be far to run up to the port but I will know more later. We can have a BBQ at my house for dinner or ?? I say if we eat at a restaurant/bar for lunch then BBQ for dinner. If we BBQ/pack lunch we eat at restaurant/bar for dinner....waterfront of course(Woody's River Roo)

Lastly this would make a great sunday run for those who can do sunday as well. We drop in a couple boats(mainly slow speed zones) at Jig's Landing in Bradenton on the Braden river(off Rt 70). Only way to get there is trailer(unless you want to jump a damn) but no HP restrictions. You take an 45-hour cruise(Ultra scenic) up river to one of the wackiest restaurants in the USA called Linger Lodge(Google it), grab lunch and motor back to ramp by noon-1pm. Can't really make a whole trip out of it because is not fun for a whole day.

I know some just did the St John's river but that was summer and this is for fall. No hijacking or changing the plan...vote for what trip(Venice or Alafia) and what date, majority wins. By majority it can be by the # of people who live south(Venice) or North(Alafia) that might win the vote to save on travel time. Then again maybe you want to travel south from the north and see something different..hence why a vote. Then again this is not a democracy so I can always veto and pick as El Presidente and I am pretty much 30-45 mins from both Venice and the Alfia so it really does not matter to me. ;)

Trip#1-Alafia River and possibly Tampa Bay area.
Trip #2-Venice area mostly ICW but access to beaches and Gulf.
Date A-Oct 6
Date B-Nov 3

Game for either date, either float plan. I don't live near either one, so it's all good.

Is Venice a cruise down or trailer? Overnight?

Len

Tohsgib posted 08-29-2007 11:14 AM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Len I was thinking a cruise down for us, maybe I would leave my boat at your place the night before. Then again might be better to trailer. Alafia is definately a trailer. Overnight will be at my house ;) Depending on where we go I will look into local hotels or people can stay at the Sleep Inn in Ellenton which is waterfront and next door to the Woody's River Roo. I have a feeling this is going to be more of a daytrip rendezvous with few out of towners compared to last weeks. I know of a couple couples that will probably stay with me, hence why I think the Sleep Inn might be good so we can all gather for dinner and a cruise on Sunday. VNAT anyone?

Ok...from what I understad the Alafia is only about 5 miles of running so that sounds like a sunday run or a winter run when it is too cold to go long or far.

We meet at the Hyatt or boat ramp next to it in sarasota(Centenial) about 10am. We go south down the ICW until we hit the Venice inlet which is at least an hour, probably more. Inside the inlet is an island where we can beach the boats and BBQ....head home.

Which date?

I got three locations back from a search for Hyatt Sarasota, none mentioned the word Centenial. Do you have a link for it?

I used to have some places to stay there but lost them when computer crashed and bought a new one a year ago. Maybe the date(I will work on it) will become available and I can do a last minute effort to attend.

InHerNet posted 09-17-2007 02:48 PM ET (US)     Profile for InHerNet  Send Email to InHerNet
That depends on where everyone is coming from. If everyone is boating down from the north then I would say somewhere in Sarasota or Nokomis. If they are coming up from the south then somewhere in Englewood. If they are launching in Venice then I would say everyone meet on the west side of Snake Island.

What time are you thinking? And are you planning some cruising around before beaching at Snake Island?

I will be boating up from my house. I have a private boat ramp at my house and there is a public boat ramp just down the canal behind my place. So if anyone from the south wants to boat up to Venice let me know.

Some are meeting in Bradenton and then cruising down to Sarasota where we will meet up with whoever is dropping in there, then cruising down to Venice and stopping at snake Island. We should be at snake around 12-1pm. Depending on weather. If it is going to be on the rough side I might just drop in at Sarasota but not sure how I am going to figure that out the day before.

Like dughhh

Fun places for the whole family:

What is "wholes first name?"

· Venice is known as the sharks tooth capitol of the world. We dont need any other old azz snagletooth rednecks either. On a calm day you can anchor a couple miles off the Venice Fishing Pier and dive for these ancient marvels.
Sharkeys bar and restaraunt too...

· Head "carefull frank" north to Sarasota Bay and Little Sarasota Bay, both are great inshore fishing locations. Whatever species you’re after, they are there. Venture south to Lemon Bay in Englewood. Venice's central location is angler’s dream.

· If you enjoy offshore fishing, it doesn’t get much better than this. You are only minutes from the Gulf of Mexico through the Jetty’s.

· Roberts Bay just outside the channel has a great water sports activity area. Take the family skiing, tubing or knee boarding for the day, continue building those lasting memories.

· A short boat ride north to Midnight Pass Beach will provide a great day for the whole family. Relax on the beach, look for shells or enjoy the warm Gulf waters. Don’t forget to bring your dogs.

· As you head north under the Albee Road Bridge keep an eye out for Beggar the Dolphin, don’t miss out on this close up photo opportunity, keep your hands in the boat!! I am the example...

Dining Musts:

· Just past Snake Island toward the Venice Jetty’s you will see the Crow’s Nest. Stop in for a more upscale waterfront dining experience.

· Head just north of the club and you will find Pop’s Sunset Grille and Pelican Alley, two well known local waterfront stops.

· Just before you reach the Blackburn Point swing bridge you will find the Casey Key Fish House. This great Key West style restaurant brings you back to the old Florida lifestyle.

· The Spanish Point Pub provides a superb outside waterfront dining experience. The two large docks are awfully inviting on those warm Florida days.

· Stop by our Sarasota club to enjoy Turtles Restaurant and the Turtle Beach Pub, they are ready for you.

· On your way down south, pull up to Venice’s own Marker 4 Restaurant. The food and fun flow freely. Mike, stay at the dock by yourself and count your sheep droppings...

· For those of you heading to Englewood you must stop at Marker 17A for a Greek taste sensation. Think of Nick..Don’t forget your bathing suit the pool water is always just right.

· You can’t leave the Englewood area without stopping at Rum Bay Restaurant on Palm Island. This set back island restaurant accentuates what the Florida lifestyle is all about. I was refused there.....

A little something for everyone, but no sheep depot on the go....

Gee Pat...you should write for Sheep fornication magazine.

Yes Len...some will be coming from the North if anyone wants to meet there. Not sure if I am going to leave 19 at your house or just suck it up and cruise. Depends on what Frank and Janis do. I was thinking leave the 19 at your house, then cruise to your house with F & J in either of their boats. Hook up and cruise. Might just be easier to drive my own boat from home but you know how Frank drives and I would keep him restrained.

Other thing is we don't really WANT to see Swell but he did crash our New Port Richey gig. Janis I think is tie with Swell but Chris definately takes the cake on cancellations.

Back from my Jersey 20th reunion...looking forward to seeing some REAL friends.

Frank can you bring the pole saw? I am thinking of doing a little remodeling to the squall, or maybe just trim my palm trees. Sunday i was thinking maybe we could do some shooting if we want as well, how is the wing?

The wing is getting much better. Got cleared to shoot pistols again. Up to 40 cal. No .45's or .44's yet. I'll bring the pole saw. do you need a regular chain saw for the squall?

Nick
Not weird, just smart......
How was Jersey? I'll be up there in June for my 20th.

Frank
Glad the arms better, mine is still sore at times from my May overboard mishap. X-rays and an MRI showed nothing, they say a bad sprain but 5 months later I think there's more.
My boat is critter free and garage kept.

See you guys on the 3rd.

Chris

Chris, hope your 20th is better than mine...3 showed, I made #4. Other than that Jersey is Jersey but the Pizza is great. Got to do some boating, ironically on my old Hydra-Sports. Weather was great for Oct. but not as nice as here...glad to be home.

Frank I have a 16" Husky so just a polesaw for now. Bring what you want to shoot...maybe we'll get a shot at Mooch..or Swell for that matter. You bringing the dogs? What day you coming down?

Stefan...hope you make it. And please don't pull off anything ok?

Stef and Mel are coming up to our place this weekend so I'll work on him to show up this time. They are bringing the new member of the family. I hope Stella doesn't sit on the baby. If someone knows the scoop on getting sharks teeth then I will bring some tanks and gear for diving. I may have some brats for the grill. I will bring my boat grill for the beach.

Teeth are normally found on the beach(small) by sifting sand through a strainer. Larger ones are found diving offshore but where we are going not a good option. Say Hi to Mel and wave to Stefan for me. Hope to see them in 2 weeks.

Anyone know if dogs are allowed on Snake Island? I doubt it but wanted to know for sure.

I think I will start a rollcall being 2 weeks out and seems like a good amount of people coming.

"Other thing is we don't really WANT to see Swell but he did crash our New Port Richey gig. Janis I think is tie with Swell but Chris definately takes the cake on cancellations."

WTF, Who encouraged the NPR event?
Who TF is "we"?

Sorry that my life/job situation has changed so radically that I rarely have weekends free being in the catering and event planning business. I have a full tank of fuel, charged batteries, spair oil, boat is clean and ready to go, if I can afford time..
I really need to take off weekdays and fish and boat and chill...

Started the boat the other night, no water pumping. Took it over a friends house, installed a new pump, one less excuse....

There should be a slide show on the main page. It's on the left side under interests and general. You shouldn't have to go click into the pics tab. I hope that helps.
