Anyone interested in participating as a Safety Boat Person with/ or with out a Boat, contact me Back Channel....

I dont have a solid date as of yet but will keep you posted as I have been talking to the event people. I am assuming it will be around the same time this year as last in June, right before the bay swim...which a lot of us do also:) as safety boats.

But Cheryl asked me to ask around and see who is available again this year....as she is getting started with signing people up for the swim.

I am offering anyone who wants to a place to stay and launch from in Virginia, about an hour from the swim event location by boat and we could make it a rend. as well, plenty of dock tie ups, slips, launching accomadations and it would be fun...could head down to the swim that morning or as I did last year the afternoon before. There is space at Schiebels and the state park to tie up as usual. Takes about an hour at 25 knots...

Just for your edification...and posibilities abound...

keeps me warm thinking about boating again:)

I will post more when I know more....My Best, Henry

Boaters, Paddlers, Safety Personnel....

We need your help! Volunteer to help the Potomac River Swim for the Environment.

• The Saturday, May 31, 2008 Potomac River Swim for the Environment needs boaters, touring kayak paddlers, and public safety workers to ensure the success of this distance swim, which raises funds and awareness for the health of the river.

• Free lodging is available for boaters at Scheible’s Motel and free camping is available for paddlers at Point Lookout State Park on Friday and Saturday nights.

• $50 towards gas expenses will be given to each boater.

• A complimentary pasta supper will be served Friday, May 30, 2008, at the water safety planning meeting at 6:30 p.m., at the Trinity Parish Hall in St. Mary's City. Directions are on the website at: http://artemis.crosslink.net/~cherylw/pr2008i.htm

• Boaters and paddlers will report to the swimming beach or Marina (TBD) at Pt. Lookout State Park at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday May 31. Swimmers will be accompanied by individual kayakers who will keep them on course and give them food and water. Boaters will be asked to sweep throughout the course to ensure that any swimmers who need to be evacuated can be transported to shore.

• A free picnic sponsored by the Potomac River Association and Southern Maryland Sierra Club, who benefit from the pledge money raised by the swimmers, will follow the swim. T-shirts designed by local artist Jeanne Hammett to commemorate the event will be distributed to all involved.

• To volunteer or receive more information, about this 15th annual event, contact:

I'm in as well. Let's hope for some nicer weather this year. Last year, after a hot and sunny start, all hell broke loose with a wind shift in the second half of the crossing; the year before the swim was held inshore due to very rough river conditions. I think we're due for a break!

Great start!!!

Aquia Revenge ...email me your email....back channel please and I will forward all the info to you...Great to have you aboard!

Marlin, Wouldn't want to do this without you. Your the best!

I really enjoy this event and I will perform Vessel Safety Checks and provide stickers for all Safety BOats who participate.

I'm hoping we get more boats than last year so we can keep a better plumb line on all the swimmers and kyaks this year. Race Com is including changes due specificly to recommendations made by the safety boats from last year. This should make it a better and safer event:)

We always have good time getting the WHaler Bunch together and even the non-whaler boaters have fun too:) Its a great event for a good cause:)

If anyone else comes in, email me, Thnaks Henry AKA THE YIDDIL

Okay, heres an update...were looking to get like 8-10 boats plus DNR/CG/CGAUX so talk it up and lets see about some more boats...Cheryl can deal with them being "not" whalers:) The main thing is that we have the maximum number of boats to cover the swimmers and Kyakers and not not have enough to watcxh everyone...so put the word out..I expect we will get the amount needed as we go:)

EMAil me back channel for any other needs:)questions, comments etc....thanks henry

THIS A GREAT EVENT! WE NEED MORE BOATERS TO VOLUNTEER!!!

If you need more info, holler at me back channel:)

Henry, I'm a maybe, pretty good chance , possibly! My wife isn't sure if she can go, but a buddy from work wants to be my backup. After a dismal year of boating last year , looks like I'll be up in the Thousand Islands dropping one daughter off at Bolt Castle for a wedding, and my other daughter is getting married on St. John in August. I'll let you know within a week!............Jack
Yiddil posted 01-12-2008 05:13 PM ET (US)     Profile for Yiddil  Send Email to Yiddil
Jack, you know you have an open invite...if you cna great, if you cant, then we can work it in for another get together...but i hope you can make it. Gonna be anothe rrevenge there as well:) But yours is the one I want:) hehe

But try and make it, you have a place to say at my place and we can get you the free motel:)You have to pay for your own booze though:)) hehe

Some are on the fence still due to not knowing if they can find the time...(At least 2 people from last year) So we are still looking for people.

There are just so many rooms we cna reserve for this weekend event and so its first come first serve for the freebee...the rest can camp for free on land at the state park, or on their boat...

I contacting some of my CGAUX people to see about increased support as well, DNR and CG willl be comntacted to...Plan is to maximize the number of boats helping to insure for a safe crossing for the swimmers and Kyakers:)

Were including dual channel race comm this year and dedicated swimmers shore counts with only one beaching area. That will help a lot...and stricter guildlines (signed by participants)for adhering to safety boat orders to event participants....

Now if we can only get some nice weather like we did a few years ago, we can save some of our hair from falling out.

Race comm is thinking about different ways of doing the race per boaters recommendatins from last year to enhance safety at each turn so i think its going to be a great event!!!

Yiddil posted 01-12-2008 05:25 PM ET (US)     Profile for Yiddil  Send Email to Yiddil
here are the coordinates for the swim....

• Start near Hull Neck, VA
N 37 57.51
W 076 23.50
• Finish at Point Lookout State Park, MD
N 38 02.63
W 076 19.42

And here is the page for that , maps, and other valuable information....on this great event...

Jack, thats great! Make sure you email Cheryl and reserve the room for friday and sat nites before they are all gone...Tell her I sent you....Yippie:0

That makes two of them there Revenges...bring the papers for her so I can buy her:) LOL

Now Im getting excited!!1 We can see how things pan out for logistics for the run down by whaler, or trailering, or staying at Das House or any of that...a lot depends on weather issues or non-issues...but I assure you we will work it out and have a ball!!

I will talk to Cheryl about logistics at the State Park
to and from the St. Marys Church dinner, and from the motel to the launch site and back....thats a bit tricky yet....

But I'm working on it.....:)

Henry, do we individually have to request accomadation at Scheibles thru Cheryl this year? I did send her an E-mail saying I would be volenteering as a safety boater. Maybe I should drop her another note to seal the deal.

How about posting a list of boaters signed up so far.

Mascots are great...bring um! LOL I have at least 6 of us in a list by email...here is the list so far....not by email:))

Yiddil nantucket
Mac mont.
Marlin 16 daunt.
Bulldog Revenge
Aquia Revenge Revenge
wasabi 46 footer

Kamie is on the fence
Scott is on the fence
Gregg is on the fence

CGAUX is pending, DNR and CG will be contacted by Cheryl:)

I think if we get 9-10 plus the law, we should be in better shape than last year...i think there were only 6 or us do to some cancellations..

keep asking around, the more the merrier:) Henry

Yep, don't want anyone confused about the accomadations. It's not a 3,4 or5 star hotel. Its a Fishing Camp type motel, very clean, comfy and basic. The foods good to at the resturant, and at the church dinner. St. Mary's is wonderful:)If you want to camp out at the state park, Cheryl has those accomadations too:) And of course you guys in the huge Whalers and 46 footers.:) Any other questions, just holler:) Henry

Just an update...we niow have 7 boats committed....

1 46 footer (Not sure what kind)
1 Nantucket
3 revenges
1 Montauk
16 Daunt.

Thats 7 boats so far and I'm confident we will get the additionals after a bit...its still early...and their are a few sitting on the fence who I hope will join us...keep asking around, we need more help out their.

Those who want to come by boat from Das House...we need to look at the logistic possibilities of getting from the Motel to the friday nite dinner, back, and then to the launch sites sat. morning if boats are docked at the motel or state park...Not over whelming, but something we can work on...feel free to give input...again a lot depends on weather...

More as we move forward...Henry

Mac, ill do that shortly...I actually have been double checking with her about some issues that I need to have comfirmation on...

1-That she has done the changes we asked her to do from last years swim....ie...

2-application agreements on "getting out of the water",

race comm. set ups,

3-location of the actual race compared to last year...She has been contemplating a swim that starts from the maryland Side, goes out half way, and comes back to State Park...

4-bouys, line and cinder blocks...DNR, CG and CGAUX support, and a number of other things.....

5-Number of rooms avail.

6-Transport from Schiebels to Trinity church, motel and state park fri and sat.

7-Berthing at st. Park....

Lots for her to check on...and get back with me:)so Ill ask her abou the other boaters...Im not aware of anyone else she has that I dont/??? do you???

I Know Kamie will let us know if she can do it down the road....I belive were down to our last room though.....

Just checked the site and the 2008 application forms for the event participants have been posted to read the following in part.......

" "to abide by event rules and regulations including water safety determinations that may result in my removal from the water if deemed to be in danger"; to accept medical treatment deemed necessary during the event; and to hold harmless by acknowledging and assuming the risks involved in an endurance activity of this nature and for myself and heirs waive all claims for damages or injury arising during the event against any individual, group, association, agency or government body involved with this activity's organization, conduct, and/or support."

I's say Cheryl has done what she said she would do to make sure this safety issue is coveredP:))Henry FYI

Henry, the out and back concept just makes too much good sense. Why didn't someone thunk it earlier? It keeps the swimmers more concentrated instead of spread out along a 7.5 mile rhumb line.

As mentioned earlier it gives the option of a shorter course for those who don't feel up to the full 7.5 mile swim. It also gives the race commettee the possible option of shortening the course (turn 'em early) if conditions warrant.

Can't wait to sample the storied hospitality at DAS House.

Mac,

yep, I thought a out and back race would cut down on the inability to monitor a 71/2 mile stretch of water(not sure it would be stretched out that bad but...its been bad every year with no time limits...

I just warned Cheryl that she needs to ahve the right bouys etc to do it right thats all. The 5 mile run is a second leg and we will figure out howw to put that into play as we go to the swim date...But your correct, it gives Race Comm and the safety fleet the control it needs to make it a safer event for sure. I'm not sure why it was never atempted before, but this year its ago!

Mac, I promise you will absolutely love "Das HOuse" and the accomadations:)

Schiebels is down to one room left...I told kamie...next sign up boat gets it...

We have atleast 1 if not more CG vessels, Skipjack is in too:)and Im sure we will have the others...CGAUX, DNR...

So we are making good headway in flat seas right now...

let me know if there is anything I'm leaving out....or that Cheryl might want to consider....Henry

Yiddil posted 02-03-2008 10:48 PM ET (US)     Profile for Yiddil  Send Email to Yiddil
Cheryl called me tonite right before gametime and said her head Kyaker was hoping to make the course like last year , full crossing from Va to Md.

I told her I thought we were pretty clear that that was a more dangerous route with the way things are at the mouth of the bay and currents and wind and weather.

I did not have much time to talk, so we will take it up again soon.

But I think I will stay with my preference for the shorter course all from the Md. side for obvious reasons, and that way we have a shorter plumb line, dont need the skip jack and we can follow along on a much shorter race track, maybe not even move if we lay it out right....It dosnt change anything for the Kyakers, they have to go around and bouy and keep heading back for the 7 1/2 mile course so I dont see the issue as one I would accept as valid for a change of venue...Anyway, more latter.....Henry

Henry, some might think it is not the same as swimming across the river for 7.5 miles. Picture grandpa telling his grandkids that years ago I swam half way across the river right here! Then again others would look at it like a tunnel, how far can you drive into a tunnel? Halfway then you are driving out! Doesn't matter to me, I have no idea what I'll be doing, hopefully not running over anyone, or smoking the swimmers out with my old two -strokes!...............Jack
Yiddil posted 02-04-2008 12:48 PM ET (US)     Profile for Yiddil  Send Email to Yiddil
HI Jack...

It's no problem for me either way....

It's just seems like it's a safer venue as they can get strung out all over the place across and and side ways and if the weather picks up like it did last year, you can't see the swimmers from the other side of the waves...You also don't need to transport paddlers and there paddles 71/2 miles across the Potomac at 7am in the morning to start the event:) Real pain....Not to mention the SipJack cost gobes of money to do the job.

I will see where Cheryl goes with this...Im easy:) But nail it down is what I told her so we can make appropriate arrangements...a longer plumb line may need a increase in support boats...a shorter one we would be in a better position and not as strung out all over the place...Just seems safer to me, same distance, different course...less to worry about including cross paths of on coming boats through the swikm lines(smaller line to watch)

Lets see what they say...any input is gladly appreciated...

Henry

Henry, I certainly don't want to bust your chops - well, maybe just a little.

In various past post I have referenced a Rhumb line as a straight line or course between two points. You have in several subsequient instances referenced this course as a 'PLUMB' line. I can understand this deviation if you were trying to 'plumb the depths' of our conversation in order to reach a new and clearer meaning. Surely this is what you meant.

I'm sure Cheryl will make the proper decision. I can certainly see the value added (accomplishment) of swiming the full breadth of the river. Hell, you could do almost the same thing swimming 7.5 miles worth of laps in a pool - it wouldn't mean nearly as much.

As far as safety is concerned, the paddlers and safety boaters can work together to reduce the risk factors.

Mac
Top Dog :-)

plumb line
–noun 1. a cord with a lead bob attached to one end, used to determine perpendicularity, the depth of water, etc.

rhumb line
–noun 1. a curve on the surface of a sphere that cuts all meridians at the same angle. It is the path taken by a vessel or aircraft that maintains a constant compass direction.

Mac, your absolutly right I was waiting to see when someone would notice plumb Line vs Rhumb line LOL Can't fool the true sailer:) LOL Actually, "I didn't know that! LOL

Yes, Cheryl will make her decision based on all availible information and we can go from their....I see the value also of the full crossing too:)

Ill let you know what she says:)henry

1- We have a new boat, Kevin's outrage 18 will be joining us. Welcome Kevin! Cheryl reserved the last room at Schiebels, but if we get more boats we cna get rooms at another place a bit further down the road!in case Scott, Kamie or anyone else participates down the road..still on the fence...

2- After lengthly discussions with her swimmers and paddlers, the consensus is to do the "crossing" swim from hull creek Va. to the State Park on the Maryland side.
If anyone has an issue with thatlet me know back channel.

3- The Ketch will transport people to Hull Creek, but may not be the lead boat "AGAIN" but we have inlisted a 46 footer we can use for that.

4 -Cheryl will be getting dual radio's for this go around, and have two designated people just doing the check off of people coming out of the water.

5- At the Dinner, Cheryl will reiterate that "when we say everyone out due to weather, thats it, or don't particiapte. They will sign a application as well. And raceComm will decide w/ DNR/BOaters if its safe to even have the event....weather is always a factor.

6- RacComm will have seperate channels for 1- DNR, CG, CGAUX, SAfety BOats, and 2- another for the paddlers.

7- Cheryl asked me to coordinate the boaters/positions on the river and communications with RAceComm and the boaters so I guess I will with all your help:)

8- We can tie up at Schiebels and Cheryl will let DNR know whos going to need docking at the state park...down the road a bit as weather dictates...

If anyone has questions or comments please email me back channel and we can talk about it...thats all for now...
Still looking for good weather to have the get togethr at das House, then the run down to the event and back....

hope we get some good calm weather:) My BEst, Henry

Would love to participate, but unfortunately I will be out of town. Please post any information you have about the Bay swim though (separate topic if needed) - I am interested in participating in that. On a side note, does anyone have information (web site, etc) for the Chesapeake Bay Whalers Club (I found an old topic from 2001). Sounds like a fun group. Thanks

While the out-and-back course is a lot easier to patrol, I have to agree with Bulldog -- "once I swam halfway across this river and back"... it's just not the same thing.

All the other changes sound great. It'll be good to have a dedicated lead boat, and dedicated radio support on the beach will really help a lot. I'm looking forward to this year!

Jolly, the Chesapeake Bay Whalers Club is a loose knit group of pirates and scoundrels who love simply messing about in our whalers. We mainly provide Safety Boat services for various distance events in the mid-bay area.

Contact me back channel, I may be able give you some more information.

Out and back may seem easier to watch, but it is more dangerous. It puts the swimmers in the main channel all but 2 miles of the swim The VA to MD crossing only has them in the main channel for 2 1/2 out of the 7 miles.

Well, I see everyone's getting the info.:)

Mac got the flags for Cheryl yesterday...a special Thanks Mac:)

The course decision made by Cheryl, based on input from all her applicants and other seems to be based more on one item than anything else. Thats what people want to do. You can't have the event if people won't participate. They want to say "I crossed the potomac" I have copies of all the emails she recieved, so it's a good call IMHO and I agree with what others have said here.

Looks like we got a 40 something foot sailboat added also, so if that all pans out we will have two rather large vessels which I think will help us alot. And that does not include the ketch taking people over to hull creek....

all good points everyone...where really on our way....

Henry,
Sorry I have not been keeping up with the progress that has been made due to family and work issues but it appears that everything is well in hand. Myself and my crew: wife, daughter and dog can't wait to participate in this event. We are also looking foward to your famous omlettes, please let me know if there are any provisions that you would like us to bring down.
Revenge UP-Date:
- She has been completely bottom stripped and whaler drive removed for repair.
- About to apply the Barrior coat prior to repainting.
- New rub-rail arrived from Barbour Plastics and expected to go on last.
When she comes back I will send some pictures.

Looking forward to getting together with you guys:)

famous omlettes and all:)

I will let you know whats needed as we get closer:)

If everyone brings something we will really have a feast!:)

Revenge UP-Date sounds great! Lots of work that I am sure will pay off down the road and make your boat even nicer...

yes! send some pics:)

I have a few things to do as I suspect everyone will in getting ready, although "Das BOat" seems pretty easy to get ready her being fairly new and has no wood...:)

But I have some other things I will try and do if I get a few hands to hold things for me.....finger piers, zinc tie off for the dock for visitors...might re-cable the boat lift down the road to add some cable, I'll see how I feel and the hands I get to help...

You always ahve to have another pair of hands to hold stuff if you want to make the job easier:)))

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon....

May have to have a Pre-Swim get together:) LOL

New Update...

I just spoke with the Coast Guard Aux and they will support the event as they has in the past. It just so happens this Flotilla is the one two doors down from Das House:) So there on board. I don't know how many boats were talking about yet but what ever we get will be wonderful so we can stop the cross traffic that unfortunatly happens as we run this event. Should make things safer for everyone:) I'm thrilled they turned out to be the Flotilla right in my neck of the woods. I met them a while back as they were doing training in the creek and there a great bunch of friendly people and knowledable too:)

So what ever numbers we add to the safety boats will be a real plus me thinks....

I'm pretty excited where getting all this help from everyone:)

Feel free to make any comments or recommendations we can take under advisement

But he and kamie know that:)

Okay a short update as we aprouch SPRING! yes, warm today will soon be here...so get cracking on your spring work-ups on those gorgeous whalers!

I spoke to Scott today and he had good ideas about radio channels and the like. I can share them with you all back channel as we move forward. The big news is I asked him again if he would reconsider and make himself available for his good friends and fun time, and he DIDN'T SAY NO!!! HES THINKING ABOUT IT!!! Yippe...So email him and keep after him, as I can not drink all the beer myself:)) Not heard from Kamie in a whle and hope she can make it also...

As for me, I have positioned appropriate materiels in the right spot for my work up the "fleet" I have had a lot of other things I'm playing with here so I am sure it will be at least another week or more before the weather changes so i can put days together back to back on the "fleet".

We are slowly coming down to fine tuning things for the swim. I will contact everyone back channel with the nuts and bolts as we move ahead, but its a bit early.

If anyone has some general questions, comments and special needs to consider please don't hesitate to "spill yer guts" here or back channel.

Okay, off to stock pile some more supplies:))

Hope everyone is doing well...It's getting to be spring here, and this week promises to be the week the warm weather breaks out all over the place for good in the DelMarVa...so i hope everyone is looking forward to their respective clean ups and outfitting's.

I've always find it medicinal myself getting ready for the spring boating season, spring rockfish season,"Potomac Swim" and all that the warm weather brings to bare....

Everything is pretty much the same for the swim....I'm still waiting for the other few people to "be their or be square" notice. I probably have room for 5-6 boats at my dock so that should not be an issue, bring bumpers and lines....

As we get closer I will contact each of you to see what final plans are based on the weather, coordinate how, what, when and where, rooms, provisions to bring to Das House and other items.

I have a launch 5 minute from Das House thats under lock and key and their is lots of room for veh. and trailers their and at Das House. For those coming by boat, I will send you coordinates, map, and every one shoould have the map and coordinates for hull creek from the "Potomac Swim" site. If you head directly to schiebels, I will meet you their to assign you a room as I shopuld be their earlier..by mid day friday.
Ill send you all Das HOuse information ie phone number and location as we get closer to the event date.

WHat i need preliminaryly is an email to me with your intentions....boat down to Das House, Trailer DOwn to Das House, trailer down to Schiebels..which one...and if the weather turns rough, what will be your 2nd option...

Email me that so I can map out and prepare for everyones contigincy..

Other than that..happy spring...or as Darrell says...bugity bugity burity..lets go boating boys and girls..:)) If you watch NASCAR you will appreciate that..hehe

HI all, Justa quick update....

1- We now have 4 boats making the run from "das HOuse' to Schiebels....Nice taking to Justin today. With spring fast approuching, were all Im sure chompin at the bits to get everyone splashed.

2- I recieved an email from Cheryl, wenow have a 2nd 40 footer(power). 1st one is 46 footer.Information is sketchy, I emailed Cheryl back to get specifics:)

3-Those that have not emailed me about your intentions, please do so cuase I need to prepare depending on how you choose to come down to the swim. I need to know how many are in your party so i can get the right motel rooms for you and yours.

4- As we move closer to the Swim date, i will ask everyone for phone numbers, cell numbers so we can stay in touch better....down that way, cell phone usage can be iffy...as I told Justin.

5- I will get together a attachment with coordinates for Das House, State park, Schiebels, Hull creek etc so you all have a paper trail to use with natical maps...I should have this for everyone in the next few weeks.

Add CG aux, CG, and DNR, Ketch, plus 2 on the fence, we should have a good group for the safety fleet. Still waiting for a few more people to join us....

Another quick update....

For those coming by plane train and waterway, trailer and WHalering down the river from Das HOuse to Point Lookout/Schiebels, I recently talked to Jack and one of the 42 footer owners and I think we have the logistics of the car travel to the Trinity Church and back, DNR docks and back covered ...email me back channel and I will explain..or just be advised, Jack and another have volunteered:) Also Cheryl will if we need to, hire a paddler to do it as back up....best thing is we are covered:)We have 5 boats making the water trip down:)

I suggested to Jack that he bring an extra gas can cause there isnt much on the river in that area, but you can get some on the road in the vacinity of Schiebels:)Especilaly if your coming down by boat from Das HOuse.I have a gas station 1/4 mile away, smale local country store, a few pennies more but very close....bring a 5 gal. can:)

Pass the word...also still looking for a few more Whalers....speak to you soon, Henry AKA THE YIDDIL

Henry, regarding "If everyone wnats to have a cookout lunch sunday". I have a moderately long drive back to God's country(I mean the Eastern Shore). I personally would rather run up to Das House Sunday morning, load up Top Dog, extend a heartfelt thanks to you and Pat for your gracious hospitality, and hit the road no later than noon. But hey I might be persuaded to stick around for a quick dog or burger some chips and a soda before I hit the trail. One can not ever have too much of a good thing.

Mac...thats what i figure...why go home on an empty stomach:)

I have some good news.

Kamie sent me an email and sounds like she will try and make it down Sat. Morning. I'll get her the channel numbers when we finally set them so she can call in when shes close.

Spoke to Scott a few days ago, he's thinking "about coming down and helping in some way" I offered him a ride on my boat....

So we may have two more or one more boat depending on the out come of this. be nice to have two of our regular "Chesapeake Bay Boston WHaler / Potomac River enjoy this event with us.We could use all the help we can get as I hear there up to 56 paddlers, and i'm assuming as many swimmers:) Thats big time this year!

Scott is actually the founder and original organizer for all of our "safety fleet" events, I'm just filling in a bit:)

Anyway, were rolling:)

WE could use a few more boats so if anyone else is interested please contact me back channel so we can get you squared away. Don't worry about the lunch just yet...I'll work something out with you at some point...A lot depends on the weather and also your bnot alone on the long ride home, but keep in mind the event, the boating and the friendship will out weigh all that driving...And if it's not one day it will be anotheer that we break bread at das House:)

Okay people, more info...we have like 75 paddlers i'm told, still waiting on info on the number of swimmers but my feeling is it will be as many!!!! That really big compared to previous years!

I forwarded all the info i had for 5 boats who may need to dock at the state park on friday nite...you know who you are. I'm only waiting on one more person...KEVIN If your out their, email me your info...answer your emails please!!!

I'm still working out some issues on the home front but I am sure I will be ready for everyone and the trip down to schiebels and the swim:)

Everyone should maximize their safety gear, tools, etc...Its a long trip back and forth and across and back so make sure you have your boats in tip top shape.the best safety device will be that you will not be alone , but in a group were you will get the hep if you need it.

Im getting togther a list of things Cheryl can go over at the dinner we want her to cover....safety stuff, who makes what call, radio channels...have no fear , ill cover it all...

Okay..Finally got email from kevin...he's still in. Had a mix up with dates...Great! One more WHaler:) Hes got a lot of work yet to do on his, but he says he's still in:)

Does everyone have or does anyone else need directions to eithe Schiebels or Das HOuse? I think I sent everyone the information and personal information has been sent to Cheryl after discussing DNR arrangements. We have to get advanced okay from DNR to use their dock for overnite docking at the State Park. IF there is over flow of boats, their is docking at the camp grounds, so don't worry.

I hear we have at least 60 KYakers! not 75 as originally thought...but thats huge with 2 swimmers per Kyak...

So gar we have 11 Boats including the 2 40footers for the rear and lead boats, The DEE is onlt bring the Kyaks over in the am, and then leaving...

We have two people doing a relay swim together and I think there are a few doing a double...dont worry about that right now...we have that covered.

Get those boats ready and Anyone else want to get involved we'd love to have you:)

Jack,

What ever floats your boat man:)

Friday is not real bad if we get settled at Schiebels, and and put the whalers to bed safe and sound but be advised it's a long day on Sat. starting at like very early am.

And thats just for starters getting everyone across the river with there paddlers. Then the swim first starts and you might beout there till 2pm...thats why people have a room to kick back Sat. Nite, and then we usually leave Sunday Morning...for Das HOuse (we could leave Sat as well)

A lot depends on weather of course....but I'm sure you will figure out what works best to be the most comfortable.

I just found out the tail boat won't be a tail boat, only around to get people to the Va. side am(wasn't glad to hear that but...what can i do) We will be just fine if everyone else shows , even better with two more boats if we get lucky.

The weathers been so bad here in Maryland/Va I'm weeks behind in my preperation like so many others...but I will be ready one way or another.

Just heard from cheryl by email...down at Das House woring up things for the swim...Potomac is choclate brown, with huge high tides and lots of debree from the most recent storm...

Never the less, I expect to go fishing in sunny weather Sat:) so the river better hurry up and clean up! The run off is encredible!

Storm seams to fry the phone a bit...not getting calls sometimes..will correct the next few days...email being checked....

Cheryl tells me we have a second place to park the whalers ...becuase we need roon in the am for the sipjack, peterson and heinz with their 40 footers to transport the Kyakers and swimmers across the river to hull creek...

we will work it out no matter what...also going over the issue of cqalling the swim in bad weather quickly this time around if needed...:) Covering it all:)

ARe we excited yet!? Im choppin at the bits...email works...email me if you like....Henry

By now, everyone got Cheryl's email ...with tons of information...looks like were almost there...I thought nice touch to Double gas money for all whalers .....they don't do that at the Chesapeake Bay swim!!!!

Anyway...please note all the pieces to her email....It hits on everything:)

Get those Whalers ready..were gonna have a ball:)

Got her e-mail the extra gas money is nice, but I sort of feel like it's for a good cause and I shouldn't take it. Ok, two daughters in college, one getting married , what did just say?
I'm not sure about the Whalers each carrying two kayaks across the river, I think they would fit on mine, but not much room for the kayakers then.....Jack

jack,

I thought Cheryl was pretty nice to do that...the money for gas...

Missed the part about the crossing but I will check it....

Down at Das House trying to catch up....had two good days, now it feels like rains going to come in tomorrow, but nice for Sat and Sun...who knows, could get some fishing in but with all the run off...yuck...dark brown everywhere...will take a few days to clear.

I think things are working themselves in nicely and we may be some great weather and be home free...

Like I said, playing catch up around here...but I'll be ready with bells on:))for everyone:)

Jack,

My initial plan is to:
a. Put out the fenders

b. Tie off the kayak's painters on the Norman post and raft each kayak port and starboard.

c. Afix a line to the aft part of each kayak to stabilize.

This way a whaler can move two kayaks and three or four people.

I've seen Scott L. move a 13 foot Whaler rafted to one side of his 18 Outrage smartly across Eastern Bay without incident. But then Scott is a better sailor on a bad day than many of us could hope to be with our 'A' game.

Mac,

I prefer to do an along-side tow rather than a trailing tow, and have moved a 20-footer many miles along the Potomac that way with my 16 Dauntless. But any way you look at it, a tow makes for a slow trip. If the kayaks won't go aboard, then 7.5 miles off plane probably isn't going to keep to the schedule.

If the seas are calm, I was thinking I might be able to load a kayak or two athwartships aft of the pilot's seat. I doubt I could any lengthwise on my boat.

We'd probably be better off if they stacked the kayaks on the Dee's deck space, and we took the kayakers aboard the Whalers.

By the way, anybody heard any news about the Bay Swim? I haven't heard a thing.

I checked in with Scott a couple of weeks ago via e-mail. I assured him I would be available. Last week I spoke with John Olinger, he said Scott had asked him to attend a planning meeting for him and said that the dinner/safety meeting was still at Kent Moor @5:30 PM Saturday.

In any event I'm showing up at Kent Moor Saturday evening for dinner and door prizes.

Hi all...

still down here at Das House preparing...heavy rain last nite again, but the sun is breaking through now...

I agree with Bob, and have emailed Cheryl on taking 2 Kyaks over each...missed that...I told her lets see how the three large boats (including the dee) do with loading up before we have to do anything else...I am not crazy about tearing up my gelcoat by putting boats inside my vessel..and i told her so. I also stated that we have 6 whalers coming down from a long way by boat and they will be pretty full with supplies etc, making what she asked for more difficult...but I told her lets see how things develop...no need to over react just yet...it will work out...I'm going whalering this weekend or bust!

Kayaks on whalers,
I found the easiest way to carry them is to run them down the rails bow to stern. Put 2 kayakers and even a couple swimmers on the stern seat if it's back in the boat.
Bungie cords around the rails keep the kayaks in place although the folks with the wooden ones get nervous.

Bay Swim planning meeting is tomorrow night and captains dinner and prizes still set for Saturday night before the swim.

Well today was interesting as the weather changed 6 times down here...I mean 6 different climatic changes worthy of 6 different localities! Amazing! Foiled again:(Northern Neck weather has been something this year.

But it still the best way I know how to spend a day:)

Kamie knows all about transporting....hey are you going straight to hull creek in Va. Kamie? or are you coming to the launch site to transport some of those Kyaks?

I think for the most part they will be handled as always by the Dee and the other larger boats, but we may need to supplement some (up to 10 Kyaks across. Justin told me today he thinks he can handle 4 on the stern of His Revenge alone:) and we have three revenges this year if everyone shows. He's coming from a long ways up river so were planning his trip out to make sure he gets in to the Glebe okay.

Marlin and I spoke today as we had to cancel fishing trip due to 3-4 footers on the Potomac tonite and tomorrow, Small craft advisories thru sunday morning.

About the Kyaks, I am sure we will work it out at the launch site after we see what we have...

Let me take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support, help, and effort in putting this all together. It's a Team Effort. Originally, I thought Scott would handle all this, but when he bowed out, I was torn, as he is one of my best friends. Anyone who would drive 5 hours to bring me, a very sick man a corn beef sandwich has to be a best friend:))But we agreed that we should go ahead and make the effort to enjoy a couple of days out on the potomac together. And after all is said and done, thats what this is still all about! Thnaks for your continuing support....Henry AKA THE YIDDIL

Hull Creek or Point Lookout or staying at my dock, is all dependant on the weather. Now if you and Marlin had been up and on the water at the crack of dawn, you could catch a load of striper and be home before the wind and the waves came back. Dead, flat calm at 7am.
Alas, I was not out fishing either this morning. If all goes according to plan (not likely) I will at least have the boat in the water by the end of the weekend.

I'm sure we will get it don if were talking about three kyaks that need a lift at this stage...

Okay....one of the last updates before the memorial day weekend....

Specific Items regarding clothing bags for swimmers and their final resting place, Transportation of Kyaks, and swimmers are in their final stages of planning and have pretty much been determined...It's all amtter of going over everything ....

Cheryl and racecomm has been terriffic this year and anything I have requested has been taken care of...weather it be radios, flags, gas money...specific support for transport for the whaler crew to and from places...

We in return have done everything we can to support her effort. Her's is not a small undertaking.

of course, we still have room for any other Whalers that want to participate...so email me....

As for me, I'm getting ready for all the whalers and whaler buddies who are coming down to Das House, or meeting us at Schiebels for the event. I have the decals and forms in the car for the VEs for everyone...Temp docking should be a snap for everyone both ways.

Thnaks to al who said they would take some Kyaks:)or help with transportation, or who have been my left and right arm for all this...

This weekend is supposed to be gorgeous so Ill be their should anyone want to come down and do a dry/wet run, bring your whaler down and get used to the location:) or come by and BBQ. Supposed to have gorgeous weather:) finally...

Some one remember to bring an alarm clock for schiebels am wake up!I always forget...

More later...Henry

i decided not to wait and sent everyone a list of call sihns for each boat in the flotilla and position chart so you know where you are assigned. After we get everyone over to hull creek, please take your assigned positions prior to the start of the swim. Thats the simple part me thinks:))

I'm hearing good things about some of us who are getting their boats ready and trust we will not have any no shows as we are a bit light as it is boat wise. yes I know, we have had less on some years but I like to think with this many boats we can cover any contingincies...remember, we have the DNR (2), CG (1) and CGaux (1) boats as well.

I hope they will kill most of the cross traffic this year and stick with us till the end.

Now what we need the most is great weather:) Henry

Henry, when you say "Rain Parkers", I presume you mean Parkers that are suitable for use during the rain. That's very generous. Having a second boat for rainy weather could be quite handy, what with my Whaler being an open boat. I'll take a Parker 2320 Sport Cabin please. The fit-and-finish isn't quite up to Whaler standards, but it's a very serviceable boat. ;-)

Anyway, David got XM to sponsor the event on short notice...and next year maybe we will get more free stuff.

Well, no breaks for the Potomac River Swim for the Environment. It seems that the environment doesn't want to cooperate.

Friday, our rendezvous day before the event, was sunny and warm, but with winds SW at perhaps 10-15. Because my daughter and I needed to get back home Saturday evening, we elected to trailer and launch from Point Lookout State Park MD rather than starting at Henry's (Yiddel's) house across the river in VA.

We arrived by boat at the motel in Ridge VA about the same time as the others who crossed the river. They had an eventful crossing, but I'll let one of them fill in the details!

In the afternoon we ran back to Point Lookout to position the boats for the start of the race at 7 AM Saturday morning. By that point winds were up to 15-20, and waves were 2-3 feet. We pounded straight into them for the 5-6 miles back to Point Lookout. Since Henry's back was sore from their first crossing, I offered to run his Nantucket. He thought that was a great idea, then came along with me anyway, pretty much defeating the whole purpose. However, it did give my 19-year-old daughter her first chance to run my 160 Dauntless on her own, in really nasty conditions no less. She hung in their bravely, and did a fine job of boat handling in the big whitecaps. Justin reported that he was often getting good views of the entire bottom of the boat as she ran in the wake of his Revenge 22.

Forecasts on Friday were for Saturday winds SW 15-20 with gusts to 25, waves 1-2 feet, and afternoon severe thunderstorms with possible tornadoes. Sounds exciting. At the organizational briefing Friday evening, the skipper of the bay skipjack Dee of Saint Marys told the group that if the weather was as forecast, the Dee would not be leaving port. Sure enough, Friday dawned with the wind blowing like stink, as my Grandfather used to say, and the Dee cancelled at 5 AM.

Most of the swimmers took a shorter 4-mile swim in the inshore waters of Lake Conoy, but a half dozen swam the round trip from shore to a bouy about 2 miles out. Hard-core folks, I guess, as conditions were 2-3 foot breaking waves directly head-on, and deteriorating. They were escorted by a beautiful 42-foot custom down-east-style cruiser, one kayaker each, and us in the Dauntless.

I had been worried about the kayakers, but it seems I needn't have worried -- they all handled the waves with no problem at all. The lead kayaker asked if we thought we were going to be okay on the Whaler, which I thought was pretty funny, but I guess it's all about what you're accustomed to.

The swimmers completed their trip in about 2 hours, and we got a bit wet from blowing spray but otherwise enjoyed the trip. "Too rough" is for people who drive Bayliners ;-)

I hope the rest of you all had an uneventful crossing on Sunday back over to VA. I'm looking forward to seeing the photos!

We did. It was a great ride in nearly calm Potomac River waters. Levi and I rode with Justin and cruised at 27 MPH for just over an hour to Henry's. Mac and Henry (Yiddl) rounded out our group. I got back in my truck and hot-footed it back to Scheibles to get my sick boat (likely a bad fuel pump). Glenn offered to tow my Outrage across the river to a ramp where I met him with truck & trailer. Levi and I were then headed back to Balto by 2pm.

Thanks to my great Whaler friends (Justin, Kamie, Mac, Bob, Henry, Scott) for helping me so much over the weekend! I would have been in big trouble without you.

Well, the 2008 Potomac Swim is in the books...not eactly what we hoped for but the weather just gave us fits again.
JUstin, Mac, Me and Kevin ran the river down to Schiebels on Friday, but because Kevin got a bit lost, we left a bit late and by the time we got to Piney Point, we had stiffwhite caps, a dead outrage and a barge baring down on it:(After a snaped line Justin took his gorgeous Revenge 22 and towed kevin all the way to SChiebels in 2-4 footers. It was Nasty as snot!. My back was worn out, so Marlin jumped as always to be the first to help out his fellow whaler buddies..first with kevin engine, then with transporting my boat to Point LOokout docks. I didnt want to miss the fun so I went along and probably should not have, but now Im glad I did. By the way, Marlins daughter is the gold standard for dads daughters:) WHat a terrific person she is...takes after her Dad , apple dosn't fall far from the tree:)

I think we hit come bad ones in the 4-5 foot mark, cause for the first time I got wet in my boat!...could have been the angle of the waves at 3-4:) woke me up!!!

Mac spent a lot of time airborn on the potomac, and was quite the trooper, his Montauk/withe the gorgeous ETEC was something to watch scooting up river today:)Marlins 16 is no sloutch..., and Justins boat I have vowed will be mine one day when he goes and gets his 27

Kamie and Scott ferried us everywhere and especially at the times we needed it most...thanks so much...

The swim on the Potomac was cancelled and an alternative swim was made in lake Canoy, although some braved the river with the 46 footer, and later we found out 8 swimmers did some swimming as hey prepare to swim the English Channel later in the year.hey, its their life to do as they choose.

There were 47 swimmers, and 65 KYakers, 8 whalers as two cancelled , lots of wupport and even a 46 footer.

XM Radio suppied really nice rain /wind jackets, and Boston Whaler supplied the flags and first aid kits that were hard shelled water proofed things that were very popular with everyone.especially the contestants:)

Schiebels was great, and although the weather really stuck it to us with heavey and strong storms, we had a great windy BBQ at Point lookout, not to mention the Hebrew Nationals at my place:)

Coming back, three of us went up river and it took about an Hour in flat water and it was gorgeous AFter everyone got loaded up and headed in their directions, I went back out as it was gorgeous, but hot most of the afternoon. Then came in and covered her up and headed for Maryland.

Heck even the plumbing was fixed:)! hehe

This years event was fantastic, even with the weather. Things were set up and organized extremely well, and my hats off to Cheryl for making the right calls immeadiately with regards to weather conditions. Safe guards were better than most years with redundant set ups, checks and balances. Thanks Cheryl.

I want to especially thank all the boaters who participated. We had more boats set for this event than in any previous years that I know of. YOur dedication to this event and to the WHaler group to go and do what ever was nessessary to have this event, and for us to have some fun boating together should not go without mention. Ive not met finer people anywhere. WE spent the entire time helping each other, laufting together, and enjoyiong each other and boating together, and thats what in the final analysis, its all about. It was a great time...thanks to the sponsors as well (XM and BOston Whaler)

My heart felt thanks to all:)I'm sure we will post some pics after we back in and settled down ...tired so I'm going to get some rest and will have more later...

Henry aka The Yiddil

PS thanks to CW for allowing us to keep this posted here as well...

High all,
For my first Whaler group event I had a fantastic time. I can't begin to thank Henry enough for getting me started with this great Potomac River Whaler group. Bob, Kamie, Mac, Kevin & Scott thank you all for welcoming me into your group, I had a great time meeting you all and hope we can all get together again soon. Kevin, I'm glad that you were able to get your boat back safely and hope to see you on the river with a fixed outboard or a new E-Tec.
Well, after leaving Henry's around 11AM I headed up river and when I got to the 301 bridge I had a low oil alarm so I stopped to put mor oil in the tank. As I was doing this the Coast Guard pulls up to make sure that everything is OK and it just happened to be the guys that were going to participate in the Potomac River swim, great bunch of guys. Back under way, I proceeded to cruse up river, at about 38 knots, I got all the way up to Timms II and noticed that I was just about out of gas so I pulled into the marina right net to them and filled up. I then went on my merry way home. What a beautiful day on the river, until about 2:30 - 3:30 PM when all hell broke out. I was safely home but the wind and rain hit so hard I could only imagine what it was like out on the river.
All in all I had a great time, met some great new friends and can't wait for our next adventure.

PS: Henry, you are first in line for my Revenge if I do go for the 27.

Well, I feel a bit better that I had to drop out, I've always thought it was me that brought the rough water, now I know it isn't me, it must be HENRY!! Put me on the list for next year , my Revenge loves the Chesapeake chop! My grandfather passed away on Friday with family at his side, it was where I had to be....Jack

Jack, of course it was were you were supposed to be:)My sincere condolences. Yes, I have you down for next year:)

Even with the one or two issues we had to deal with, everyone had a nice time and enjoyed. Thats the nice thing about this event. Even when its bad weather we always find a way to enjoy.

We had NASCAR, Good Food and drink, Met games, Mac's rum, beer in assorted quantities, Crab cakes, Great BBQs, just to name a few. We had new members to our group, old members and at least one "Unretired" person.

For all those that did participate, when your settled, please provide me an email back channel with your thoughts and perceptions of this years event, and your recommendations for next years event. Last time I asked, we got a lot of good stuff to incorporate into event palnning stuff.

Thanks in advance for your input and assistance....Henry
