Here we go again! Last year March 1st was a tad nippy so this year I am bringing it out another 1/2 a month. Mid March should be plenty warm by then...plus it's my wife's B-Day. Many come down Friday. Saturday we will kick off a poker run if ya'll are interested at say 11am and meet at the seacow pen around 1pm ish. Dinner is pot luck with whatever everyone brings at the campfire. Keg will be provided as well. Sunday we just gunkhole around until about noon for those who are interested. I was able this year to hold the rooms. For Friday I have just 2 efficiencies and 2 rooms on hold. On Sat I have all the rooms on hold and 2 efficiencies. Please don't delay too long for your hotel, this is not a large establishment 6 efficiencies($125) and 12 rooms ($85). If you find out you can't make it, let us know BEFORE you cancel the room because chances are somebody here will need it. You have up til 48 hours to cancel but give us a few days before hand if you can. There are other hotels nearby but Mac's has free dockage, the boat ramp, bombfire pit and BBQ, and a great Tiki bar with a band. Mac Raes 352-628-2922 Who is in and what day(s) are you attending with what dish for dinner if possible. For those coming from afar and don't want to bring a dish, we always need cups, plates, etc or Publix is just down the road.

I will start this off:

Nick and Laurie Manukas...13' sport coming in Saturday morning til Sunday. Bringing the keg.

11 rooms left and 6 efficiencies.

PS..for those wondering, yes you CAN bring another branded boat. You can come without a boat, we have plenty of room. Janis used to attend with a new Edgewater or something her hubby would borrow, it was a nice treat. Some snowbirds have a Whaler up north and another brand down here...no biggie, bring it! This is for Whaler enthusiasts, does not necessarily mean you have to have one in your possesion. I have been to the dark side and been Whalerless before...I know how it feels to be down in the dumps. We'll chear you up...literally!

I have the cockpit floor out of the boat, sooo you might say the boat is not operational right now. Hope to have the project finished before March first. We do not need a room as we live about 15 miles away. If all goes well we will be there with or without a boat.

We just got the pitch from Jannis on this weekend and are considering it. Me, the wifey and our 13'. I don't suppose the hotel allows dogs does it?

What pitch would that be? Tell everyone you are coming then never show up!

Dogs are not allowed but there is a kennel down the street.

Just booked a room for Saturday nite. If they tell you over the phone that the hotel is booked, mention that you are with the Whaler/ Manukas group. Nick has the hotel locked up for us. Use your own credit card to hold the reservation.
Tohsgib posted 01-26-2009 01:41 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
I assumed they would know to mention the Whaler rendezvous but you know where assuming gets you. Yes use your card to reserve the room and again you have 48 hours to bail(which you WON'T do ;) because we are down to 8 rooms and ?? efficiencies and many of the regulars have not chimed in yet. I "assume" that we will be down to 3 rooms very shortly so get in while you can.

Hey Gang, I am holding off booking a room right now. My wife just had some nasty back surgery done and has a long recovery ahead of her. She may be getting around alot better by mid-march but for right now I am planning on taying close to home and not venturing very far. I will eep you posted though.

Frank, feel free to use the flag if I don't show. You can always ship it to me after the event if I do not make it. I have not completely ruled out coming yet but I need to keep my plans open for now.

Joe...you might want to book it anyway being only 3 rooms left. You have until 48 hours to bail or send to another CW member who needs a room. What about your neighbors who were going to attend this year?

Ps...2nd notice e-mail just sent out to all GCBWOA members. If you want to become a member(free) please e-mail me with your info. I will probably send 1 more notice when all rooms are booked and then a final reminder a few days before the event with a rollcall, etc.

Frank,
No problem, I will email the acount number to you when you are ready. I may take Lens advise and still reserve the room in case things change at the last minute. Thanks for the kind words, she has really been in alot of pain since the summer. The boat will be off limits to her for a while.

Good to see your post. Sure hope wife makes a fast and complete recovery. Have had an "iffy" back myself so know what it's like. I'll be coming back up to the mountains two weeks after the rendevous so if you want me to I'll throw the flag in the frnt cooler of Nauti and bring it up with me. Sure hope you can make it down, go ahead and reserve a room just in case. Be good to see you again.

The floor project is going well. Should be putting the final touches on the underside today. Hope to turn it over to work on the fiberglass top either tomorrow or the next day. There will be a lot of cosmetic finishing to do before I can reinstall the floor back in the boat.

We should be ready for the rendezvous by March. We will probably arrive there on Saturday morning, spend the day and return home Saturday night. I was wrong about the distance, it is 30 miles from our house. Still not a bad drive.

Believe it or not Kids...it is only 5 WEEKS away.

Better snap up a room and let us know you are coming. I am going to release what rooms are left(if any) in early March so I don't screw the hotel out of $$. Feb is a short month and we will be in March before you know it.

New owner of a 13 Sport. We live about 15 miles from Homossassa so you can count us in. Of course we do not need a room since we will come home to sleep. Looking forward to the get together.

WARNING: do not step foot on Monkey Island. A visitor that had a little too much to drink decided he was going to visit the monkeys on Monkey Island. He ended up getting beat up pretty good by the monkeys.

Funny story- At my closing I met the bank lender we've been working with for 1st time face to face- guess what? he had a Whaler jacket....not bad for a banker-just kidding, Tom is his name, and he might make the trip. He's got a post classic, 30 something outrage dual merc's- but be nice!

Side note, the buyers of the River House, also had classics, a 20 outrage, and a montauk. They have regretted selling them. When they saw my Whaler, they knew it was the right home for them.

Funny, the choices we make in buying a boat affect those of us in that subgroup more than we probably realize.

The weather was beautiful yesterday. We had highs of 72. We took the boat out to Withlacoochee River, and it was pristine!

We are at that time of year when you have wild swings in the temperatures, from 30-70 in 4 hours.

From what I am aware they are working on the boat ramp next to McCraes. Hopefully, it will be finished and cleaned up.

Be thankful that you have the possibility of 70 degrees. We have had 2 days since Dec 15th that have been above freezing. Also, 95% of the days are cloudy. Countdown ----47 days 'til we arrive in Florida and 49 days 'til Beercan. Thanks for the offer Nick. you have mail.

The ramp is completed. There was alot of action going on at McReas.

We went down the Homasassa and saw at least 20 Manatees. The weather hit about 83 so there were quite a few boats out.

Yesterday was a run on the Withlacoochee. If there is time the Withlacoochee is a must see.

I'll call them late this week but I "thought" they had a camp like grill you see in parks but I was seeing triple so it might have been a hotplate I was looking at. Dave Neal is also planning on daytripping as well.

So far we have 9 people who have let me know that are getting rooms and another 4-5 people daytripping. I know this will be our largest Homo rendezvous but not our largest rendezvous in general which was our BoatOberfest in 2001 or 2002 that we had over 20 boats alone.

Good job gang! I hope we get a few more stragglers before D-Day.

ToxicAvenger posted 02-23-2009 08:37 AM ET (US)     Profile for ToxicAvenger  Send Email to ToxicAvenger
If you checka out the link that is posted about McCraes they show a grill, at least it looks like a grill in the slideshow.

Last week we went down Homo.. and a kayaker was close to Monkey Island. He started screaming over at us that there were monkeys on the island in utter amazement. I had to yell at him, since he was about 2 foot away from the island, not to get any closer. You could see the monkeys were getting ready for their next uninvited guest. Luckily for him he heeded the advice given.

Where is everyone coming from? It would be nice to know who lives where. I will start. Pine Ridge, Florida, incorporated 2005. It is about 15 minutes Northeast of Homosassa which places us close to the Withlacoochee and Gulf of Mexico or Crystal River.

Ok rooms are realeased. Due to some confusing paperwork, there are actually 4 rooms left for sat night because Janis is in an Efficiency. For those looking to go up Friday as a daytrip, look below for those attending. We have so far:

Me-Sat-13'
Parents-Sat
Pat-Sat-20 OR
Len-Sat-16 Scout
Frank-Sat-21 OR
Stefan-Sat-18 OR
Janis-Fri & Sat-13 or 22 OR

Daytrippers:
Jim Day-170
JJ&Pop-20 OR
Toxic-13'
Dave Neal-17 newport
Dave Braswell-17' montauk
Madmax-32 OR
Eric Hanick-?

I hope to get a few more stragglers and hopefully Joe morgan will chime in on his plans. The hotel owner has a 13' but they will be away while we are there(might be a good thing ;) or else they might have attended. What about the couple in the Dauntless last year?

I am telling people to meet at the ramp at 10am. By the time we get unloaded and trailers stowed, it should be 11ish. I would like to gunkhole east towards the cowpens but have a local(Eric, Toxic, Jim?) show us the area to the north and south where we have not yet ventured getting to the pens about 1+ish. I was also thinking that we could do a poker run either during this time or on the way back to the hotel which we normally get to around 5ish with the last hand at the Tiki. It will be the world's first slow speed no wake Boston Whaler poker run. I will bring the cards in case ya'll want to do it.

Nick & Gang,
This gathering looks like it will be much bigger and better than last year's. I am still on the fence whether to make the trip. Good news is my wife's back surgery went very well and she is doing great. She still has a rough time with long car rides. We mad a 3 hour trip to visit my son at college last weekend and she was hurting for several days. I really don't think she is ready for the 7 hour ride each way and I really wanted her to make the trip this year. Although she would not mind if I came alone again, I think I may cancel on this year's gathering.

Keep in mind I may change my mind at the spur of the moment or the wife may just beg me to get out of her hair. I will make up my mind for sure in the coming week. Thanks
Joe

Joe, I always offer to call my friends boss when they can't get out of work to go have fun. I'm almost positive that I can say something that will get them "some" time off, but nobody has ever taken me up on it. Give us your wife's number, she'll send you down special delivery.

Frank,
No call necessary, she has always been cool with me going fishing and to whaler gatherings. I always say I was lucky to find her. I just was hoping she could make this trip but I think the drive is just too long coming off the surgery. I have a fishing trip planned to the panhandle in April and I am hoping she is ready by then.

Ok...hope you can make it Joe.

Laurie's friend Pat is also coming up and staying, she was there last year as well. My neighbor and her friend are also coming up but does not have a boat. He is gonna bring up a few dive tanks so no need to lug yours down Frank, unless mine is ready ;)

I hope you decide to come down, Joe. We need to keep the Jersey contingent strong. I wasn't going to bring tanks, but yours is done and I have it waiting by the door. I have to figure out what kind of gas to put in it. Air is old fashioned, so I thought a mix of cigar smoke and nitrous oxide would be suitable for the diving that Nick does.

Like I said he is gonna bring up like 3 tanks since his bud owns a dive shop. You would have to bring everything else if you want to dive. I was thinking of doing a quick one at the cow pens if I don't start drinking too early ;) It is only about 20 feet at most.

We will be in sometime friday afternoon; leaving the east coast at high noon. We will fish fri afternoon, and sat morning before most folks arrive. I can show you around Nauti, but having a depth finder is always good. The bait shop at the marina has great maps and a friendly staff that will answer most questions honestly. (They won't point you to the fish, just guide you:) Still haven't decieded on which boat to bring, does anyone know if MacRae's fuel has ethnol in it? Ya'll say what you want, but I won't run it thru my engines. The 13' has a fiberglass tank in it, and the 22' engines are 1987's. They run great, and I know Frank wants to blow them out for me, but just really don't want to tote 77 gallons of fuel across the state.
It's official, the T's Me fishing Team will be: Captain Janis Johnson with crew members of, First Mate, Kimberly Deloach and Senior Fish Master, Jeanne Fischer. We are truly looking forward to this event, we've all been working way too hard!

Janice, if you want me to blow those motors out, we need a different rendezvous. Takes to many cocktails to get to a no wake zone. Looking forward to this one.....

Tohsgib posted 03-06-2009 11:36 AM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
I thought all marinas did not have ethanol. The one by me is ethanol free. My 13 is almost new and EFI with a 6gal tank so i run ethanol but my revenge has never seen it. Janis there are other gas stations on the river but honestly with the river being 60% no wake zones, 13 is fine.

Janice,
Will look forward to exploring and fishing when you and your crew get there. I do have a sonar/gps so we're good there. Lois and I will arrive on Thursday so we'll be settled in by the time you get there on Friday. Would a push pole be an advantage for staking out or is drifting best. Don't want to bring too much but want to have what's needed.

Nauti,
If you go into the gulf fishing and you have push pole you will be happy. Your depth finder will be flashing a lot of time time. STAY in the channel at speed unless you are setup for skinny water.

See you all Saturday. Janis, Saturday night;o]

Do take Len's advice stay in the channel until way out, that river can be a trick to navigate, not hard, but you must stay focused and in the channel until you know it. I will see if I can fine the marker number where you can turn northward.

Have not been able to commit to this event this year, may try and come over just for one day, if I can get my boat to run, she has not been off the trailer since last August.

Hey, thanks for the good advise I appreciate it especially since the water will all be "new" to us. Trying to scrounge up a push pole to bring so I can stake out and see if Mr. Trout will cooperate and pull on the strang some. Lakeman you are absolutely welcome to knock around on our boat with us if you like, only thing is we don't drink or smoke if that's okay.(used to do ALOT of both, not a prude just medical stuff). Getting close and I'm anxious, the truck is already packed!!
lakeman posted 03-08-2009 11:58 AM ET (US)     Profile for lakeman  Send Email to lakeman
Push poles are nice but not a necessary item, better yet is a electric trolling motor, I just drift the flats until I find something and anchor(maybe that is why I never catch anything). I have not heard how the trout fishing is working out for folks but I would still think Sheepshead, if you find some rocks or structure could still be fun. Water temp are still cold but getting better, with the temps in the 80's for next week it should get the flats fishing started. For Bait Gulps are OK, I do not know how the supply of shrimp is right now. I assume you have a mapping GPS so you can find stuff easily and that is what I generally do but I fish out of Crystal River just a couple of click north, more than Homamassa(when I fish :(.

One hazard to look out for is a corkscrew section of the channel that several of us have touched an oyster bed or limestone outcrop in the past. I will try to find where it's at. Mostly for the bigger rigs like mine or janices as it's 50/50 whether you hit it.
Tohsgib posted 03-09-2009 10:27 AM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Where Frank is talking about is about 1/2 up the river ONCE you can get on step. There is a real skinny part and he bumped it last time we were up but I think we were also in a pretty low tide. All of the river if posted, you NEED to stay in the channel. Last year I was just idling outside the channel in my 13 and hit a rock that stopped me dead in my tracks. Luckily I was just idling.

I am sending out a final E-mail today. I am also gonna start a rollcall on a seperate thread, please chime in and tell us you are showing up and when, etc. Keep this thread open for chat. Janis ascrounged up some goodies from Whaler for our "ceremonies" on saturday night. Hence why it is kinda important to know just how many boats we have and people as well. We don't want anyone going home slighted ya know.

ToxicAvenger posted 03-10-2009 04:16 PM ET (US)     Profile for ToxicAvenger  Send Email to ToxicAvenger
It is a must to stay in the channel. If you vary the slightest, major damage! Of the three local waterbodies, Homosassa is by far the most dangerous. We rank the best as:

Withlacoochee
Crystal River
Homosassa

If anyone is up to a run on the Withlacoochee on Friday morning let me know. It is about 35 minutes north of Homasassa.

Heck of a turnout! I think 14 or 15 boats and well over 30 people. Lot's of new faces that I hope continue to attend our future events. I unfortunately did not have enough time to get to meet and greet everyone as much I would have liked to. Mainly due to size and trying to oversee my annoying passengers. I was a lso 52 cards short of a full deck on saturday. We'll try that again next year. Thanks again for showing Toxic, Jim & linda, Nautitauk, & Weeki Wachee and their spouses, crew & families. It was great seeing the regulars again such as Janis, Pat, Stefan, Al, Frank, Len, Joe, J&J and their spouses & crew. The BBQ was a hit thanks to Pat for bringing cups. Actually Pat brought tables, a grill, popcorn maker, etc. He really did come through this year and thanks again. The keg never made it till dark I think but thanks again Len for toting that up as well. Frank I especially want to thank for taking my parents on his boat. I did not have enough Zanax for that. Lastly Janis for her gifts from Whaler and for not beating up my annoying passengers even though I know you really wanted to(and probably everyone else). Also thanks a bunch for making my wife a B-Day cake. If I forgot anything else, please forgive me, long weekend.

No blue hulls this year. Al-A-Buy had the oldest with his mid 70's banana and I was next with my 1981 13'. We used to have a member Ward who would attend a lot of these with a 196? Nauset. We had to stop giving away the "Oldest Whaler" award because he always won it.

Sorry I missed you guys Saturday Night. After taking a ride to the gulf, Barb's back was hurting. Mainly from doing nothing. We took a ride all over to find a part for my trailer. (Lost a hub) Had a hell of a time funding something that would work. No one down there carried the grease caps that fit the Continental trailers. After driving up and down US 98, we grabed a bite to eat and went back to the B&B. Ran into Jerry at the ramp and he gave me my goodie bag. Thanks everyone. Was a good time. Hope I will see you next year.

Although Crystal river is much larger, it is much less exciting but plenty of bars and hotels. Not sure we would be allowed to BBQ and have a bonfire which is such an integral part of this rendezvous. Plus at $85 a night, one of the best bargains around and American owned.

Too bad ya moved Stefan, would not mind another Hooter's run.
