Maybe. What port of departure? |

I suppose that would depend on the destination. For IRNP, you can depart from wherever makes the most sense for you. Probably somewhere in the Keweenaw. I would be leaving from Grand Portage or Grand Marais (MN). For Bayfield, it probably makes more sense to just trailer there, rather than arrive by boat. |

David -My dance card is full for this year, but would like to return next summer. I realize that I've thrown off my "Every other year" pattern for IRNP. |

***Isle Royale*** We have planned a long weekend, leaving Houghton, MI on Friday, AM, 28 Aug and returning Monday,AM, 31 Aug. Will be in a 2006 170 Montauk, 26 gal fuel tank. Of course in a 170 all is weather dependant. We will be tent camping.***Apostle Islands*** We went up last summer, decided on thursday AM that the forecast looked great. Drove to Superior after work on thursday. We were in the water at Bayfield, WI by noon. Cruised Fri PM, Sat all day. Slept in Sun, AM then drove home. We stayed at some rental condo's, reasonable, close. We are planning another trip to the "Apostles" but have not set a date. We are very flexible and can just about decide to go any Thursday PM, as we both have Fridays off. Hal, Waseca, MN |

That's a pretty ambitious plan for an Isle Royale trip. |

Sounds like a fun trip. I have an Outrage 19 and would be interested in a long weekend trip from either location if the timing is between Aug 7 and Aug 31.

I WILL meet up with you this time if you come to the Apostles. But first week in August is out as we have family plans. Other than that, we're generally spending 3 or 4 nights a week there till school starts back up, plus a couple of full week stretches. Thinking about taking the kids to IRNP for 2 or three midweek nights some time either in mid-July or early August. That is more likely a snap decision when we have a week without much going on and a good weather window. More likely to just leave from Madeline, as it will take much longer to drag the boat around the lake and up to GP than just run across the lake. That presumes we wouldn't get stuck by weather, but being unemployed means fewer deadlines... |

Maybe drop down to the Eagle River Chain, in WI. Or haul over to MI and do the Cheboygan..Petoskey cruise. Or maybe Hessel to Cedarville and the Les Cheneaux islands. We have off 27 Aug thru 7 Sep so we are just looking for new places to explore... We would appreciate any suggestions, dining, lodging, ramps...must see's. Hal, Waseca, MN |

Hal, my first thought about your IRNP plan was that you could get stuck on the island if the weather changes. In reality, you could bring your boat back on the Ranger. There's a picture around here somewhere of Cicada's 18 Outrage being loaded on the Ranger. Buckda has made that crossing 4 times. He can tell you all about it. With the right weather, your IRNP is perfectly doable. I'd would argue that isn't nearly enough time to enjoy the island, though. Anyhow, I'm looking at doing a 5-8 days in IRNP, or longer weekend in Bayfield. We actually go to Bayfield often, so it's likely we'd be up there on any given weekend in July or August. |

I just got a hall pass for the last weekend of July, but will have the kids. My wife decided her mom's 85th birthday takes precedence over our friend's kid's wedding, but we're not going to fly everyone to Phoenix. |

Hal -Les Cheneaux Islands are best done as part of a road trip that includes several destinations for the week, especially if you are planning to tent-camp. I suggest the following: Put in at Hessel and contact Mertaugh's Boat Works (Whaler dealer) for trailer and vehicle parking. Explore the islands (fish, swim, tube, etc) and camp on Government Island (part of the Hiawatha National Forest). Next morning, leave camp set up and run back through the islands to Hessel and then out to Mackinac for the afternoon on the Island. Return to Government Island that night. Haul out next morning early and tow to Charlevoix. Put in at Irish (Whaler dealer) and enjoy Lake Charlevoix for the afternoon and evening. Stay at a hotel that night. Drive next morning to Northport and get reservation at Leeleanau State Park for camping. Put in at Northport and cruise down to Traverse City or Sutton's Bay for dinner, Return to Northport. Next morning, put in at LeLand and enjoy Sleeping Bear Dunes and N and S Manitou islands. If weather warm enough, snorkel on shipwreck S of S. Manitou. Return to Leland and enjoy evening in Fishtown. Sleep at State park and then return home next day. |

I'm heading to LOTW for 6 days of casting for Musky. Look for me in Duluth-Superior around 2 AM Sat. morning, a Tundra pulling my Outrage-18. We'll honk as we drive through. |
