My, where has the summer gone? Well no matter it is time to start planning for this year's edition of the Annual Mullett Lake Fall Color Tour. Elsa and I are looking forward to hosting another fine weekend of boating and fellowship. The weekend we are planning is the first weekend in October (10-2 to 10-4). So who is in for the 2009 edition? Oh, I have learned that the Boathouse has reopened. Elsa and I will check it out when we are up there in early September and report back. -Don |

Dave - You know you are always welcome aboard Gambler (minus the cheetos), and of course, I am certain you could play "Musical boats" on this tour and not have any problems finding a willing master to allow you aboard his/her vessel. Is it worth the long drive? I think so- the fellowship alone is outstanding on this trip which has become a tradition. The one caveat is that it is really a pretty brief rendezvous. |

The Saturday Cruise is usually from Don's dock on Mullet Lake or a rendezvous point, south to the Indian River channel, through the town of Indian River, and onto Burt Lake. Then across Burt Lake to the Crooked River channel, and down the Crooked River to Alanson. At Alanson there is a swing bridge and lock that have to be transited to enter Crooked Lake. Some years the fleet has gone through and onto Crooked Lake, and some years not, depending on the time of day and weather. The lock at Alanson is now a pay lock, and the fee is a rather nutty $5 each way, if I recall correctly. Crooked Lake is not that much of an attraction that it is worth $10 to see in my book. The return trip retraces the same route back to Don's dock, or some boats break off and go to their own docks at their accommodations along the way. Saturday evening we usually have a pot-luck dinner at Don and Elsa's, with everyone bringing something, coordinated by the ladies. There is usually a slide show of some interesting trips taken. If you have any good slides you want to show, bring them on a USB drive. On Sunday we have added a supplemental cruise for the really gung-ho Boston Whaler boaters. We reposition our boat trailers at either of two Cheboygan River boat launch sites. One site is above the dam and one site is below the dam and near the mouth of the river at Lake Huron. We cruise north from Don's dock, up Mullet Lake to the Cheboygan River channel head. Then we motor (at no-wake speed) about eight miles down the Cheboygan River. If we leave the trailers above the dam, that's the end of the cruise. On some years when the weather is really great, we leave the trailers below the dam. We transit the dam, continue downstream to Lake Michigan, and take a spin on the big lake before hauling out at the ramp north of town near the river mouth. If the weather is really really good, I propose this year we could add another leg. We could spot the trailers in Mackinaw City early on Sunday morning, requiring about a 40-minutes extra drive, then cruise from Mullet Lake, through the Cheybogan River, through the lock, into Lake Huron, and run the ten or fifteen miles from Cheybogan west to Mackinaw City. We could haul out there, and get back on the trailers and the highway for the trip home. Weather plays a role in all of this. Last year the weather was not very cooperative, and the fleet got a late start. We ate lunch in Indian River, and cruised on to Alanson and back. Based on the generally cool weather we have had all summer, I expect this fall to be a warm one, so we should have a mild October day for the cruise. |

Elsa and I just got back from two weeks at our cottage on Mullett and the weather was nothing short of spectacular, upper 70s, light breezes and plentiful sunshine. If just a fraction of this holds Jim prediction will be spot on. And now that we have Jim's assurance of good weather it time to get down to some planning. The Boat House in Cheboygan has reopened with limited hours and the reports I have heard is sky high prices. Due to the limited hours Elsa and I were unable to get over there for a first hand scouting report. Based on that I purpose that we once again do our Friday night dinner at the Brown Trout in Indian River. Saturday morning we can rendezvous at my dock. All the extra hoists have been moved to shore and the entire dock is scheduled to stay in until mid October, so we should have plenty of dock space this year. From there we can do our traditional cruise to Alanson with lunch either in Alanson or Indian River depending our what everyone wants. Dinner Saturday night will be at my cottage. Elsa is planning a meal that will include some of Jim's major food groups. What we need for Saturday night is for someone to bring a projector so that people can share their pictures of their 2009 adventures. As for Sunday I think that planning is best left to Saturday night.

I forgot to mention that there are two new launch ramps in the area. One is on the Cheboygan river and is a DNR site called The Forks. It is located on the west side of the river just north of the Black River. The entrance off of US-27 is just south of the Ford dealer and is well marked. The second is in Indian River just east of the US-27 bridge. This one was put in by the town of Indian River and charges it's own launch fee (your DNR sticker is not good there). The closest site to my cottage is still the one on the Northwest corner of Mullett Lake. But that site is rather shallow and I know some of the larger boats don't have an easy time getting off their trailers there. -Don |

Also, can somebody post GPS coordinates or a link for a Google map to Don's place? Finally, for Saturday evening, have any details been developed regarding the menu? As much as I'd like it if everybody showed up with chocolate cake and beef jerky, I don't think everybody else would be happy with that. I'd like to have an idea of what others are bringing so that I can figure out what to bring myself. |

As it looks like the weather might be on the brisk side a good hardy breakfast would be nice. I like the idea of a 9:45 departure. Color around Grand Traverse Bay is not at peak. Actually, we are seeing only a few trees with color. If the tree has any red or orange leaves, they are also falling off sooner than expected. Don't know the reason, but might be the wet, cool weather early in the summer, then the dry spell for the last 3 weeks. |

Although the weather forecast was dismal--chance of rain 70-percent for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday--we ended up with a window of eight hours of no precipitation, exactly when we needed it. After driving 275 miles North in a steady rain, we arrived Friday afternoon at Mullet Lake to find very strong Easterly winds had made Don's dock an untenable overnight mooring. We kept the boats on the trailers and watched it rain all evening. Saturday morning we awoke to no rain and spotty sunshine. Around 10:30 a.m. we launched the fleet from the new Michigan DNR ramp "The Forks," a beautiful new facility on the Cheboygon River. We cruised south in sunshine and no rain. After lunch in Indian River, we pressed on upstream to Burt Lake. There we were greeted with ugly black clouds and a horizon disappearing into mist and fog. We reversed course and headed downstream. We we able to stay just ahead of the rain, reaching the launching ramp about 5:00 p.m. Everyone was able to load their boat back on their trailer before any rain fell. This was a blessing as everyone could put away dry canvas. Later on Saturday more showers moved in. We awoke Sunday hoping to find more dry weather, but unfortunately the persistent low pressure system that had anchored itself in the Great Lakes all weekend had rotated around, and we were back in the rain zone. No boating on Sunday. All in all we had a great 45-mile cruise on Saturday. The temperature was in the low 50-degree range, but no rain fell. The fall colors were not quite at their peak. Perhaps a few more cold nights will bring out the deep red Maples. It was fun weekend, with great company, and an amazing weather window for boating on Saturday. |

We went by car in pouring rain, but our spirits were not dampened. On Saturday during the cruise we had lunch at INN BETWEEN along the south bank of the Indian River. Then on Saturday evening we had a fabulous multi-course gourmet dinner at Don and Elsa's cottage. After dinner we had an hour or so of slides from the GLBWCC July-August cruise in Georgian Bay, and my Thousand Island Cruise, also in August. On Sunday, we were poised for some more boating if the weather cooperated, but it did not. So we had a lazy morning at Don's, with lots of coffee and Danish, and another slide show, this time from HOOSIER, who showed us his slides from both the Crossing Lake Michigan and Statue of Liberty cruises in June, and also his circumnavigation of the North Channel of Lake Huron cruise in September. Thanks to Boston Whaler for sending along a package of door prizes. All eight boat crews took home Whaler paraphernalia. And big thanks to Don and Elsa for hosting again--the Mullet Lake Fall Rendezvous was another fabulous event! |

Looks like we missed another fun one... The birthday cake for Dave was a nice touch. |
