2010 Potomac River Swim for the Environment
June 5, 2010
Boaters, Paddlers, Safety Personnel....
We need your help! Volunteer to help the Potomac River Swim for the Environment.
The Saturday, June 5, 2010 Potomac River Swim for the Environment needs boaters, touring kayak paddlers, and public safety workers to ensure the success of this distance swim, which raises funds and awareness for the health of the river.

Free camping is available for paddlers at Point Lookout State Park and free lodging is available for boaters at Scheible's Motel Friday and Saturday nights.
A complimentary pasta supper will be served Friday, June 4, 2010 at the water safety planning meeting at 6:30 p.m., at the Trinity Parish Hall in St. Mary's City.
Boaters and paddlers will launch from Pt. Lookout State Park at 6:30am Saturday morning for a 8:00am swim start from Hull Neck, Va., back to Point Lookout. Boaters will be asked to follow the course set by The Dee of St. Mary's lead vessel which will constantly compensate for the current.

A free picnic sponsored by the Potomac River Association and Southern Maryland Sierra Club will follow the swim.
Tee shirts designed by local artist Jeanne Hammett to commemorate the event will be distributed to all involved.

To volunteer as part of the “Safety Fleet” or receive more information about this 18th annual event, contact me early with your commitment. Slots and accommodations are limited.
Anyone who come's in late will be put on a waiting list though they don't usually free up by the time of the event.

As always dock accommodations and free launch are available for anyone who would like to join the run down the Potomac the day before the swim from “Das House” and return on Sunday, the day after. Last year, we had quite a few who did just that and had a ball making the run as a group, so consider it for this year’s event.

Looking forward to hearing from you and boating with all of you again this coming year.

I am happy to annouce that the "Safety Fleet" is set for this event. Actually, Most all all of last years participants said they would do it again this year over dinner last year at Schiebels:) But now your all confirmed:)

Rooms have been assigned on a first come basis, with any over flow going to campsites. Depending on the number of people some rooms may need to be shared between individules but thats for another time. If there is a dropout on the rooms, I will then assign from the list of campsite people as hey came in to me. You all know who you are as I have emailed each of you.

Chery has been informed of everyones quick response and she and I are very pleased your all coming back to join in the fun:)We again will have 11 Boston WHalers(one being a 27 Aft) and 1 37 footer, 1 42 footer non whalers, not to mention the DEE, CG, CGaux, Fire, etc....

Hopfully we will have the best weather as we did last year:)

A full package will be emailed out to everyone some time after the New Year as we would like to get recommendations from anyone who has them, for this years event. ANything you think might work better, something to change or something new. Feel free to email me.

We all had a great time last year and I expect it will be as good, if not better this year.

Thanks Everyone

Well, in a few weeks the 2010 Potomac Swim event will be held. We had such a great event last year, we will have many more swimmers and kayaks this year.

Additionally, we have a full compliment of boaters from last year although we lost 1 whaler and 1 37 footer to unforseen situations and mechanical issues.

So if there is anyone out there who would like to join us as an alternate, we are looking for 1 large boat, 37 footer or larger of any make and model, and one whaler, also, any size.

Free campsite is available for the weekend, but rooms are pretty booked up. Of course this includes a free dinner at the TRinity Church, free t-shirts, and the best damned company of boaters you can find anywhere:) And thats just where it begins:)))

You can email me if you have interest. We have people coming from all over and as far away as Ohio with there Whalers.

This is a great event, though the weather is often dicey. For a small taste of it, here's a short video from last year (when the weather was unusually nice):

The date draws nearer, all the players are in place, pretty much all the whalers are ready, all the rooms are booked, all the campsites are spoken for...1 week to go and we will "begin the begin"

If you have not contacted me with how many in your party, please do so as I may need to make last minute adjustments in accomadations...

I have tryed to accomadate everyones requests. But will make further adjustments where I can accordingto first in first out methods.

I always find a way.

All we need is the weather to hold those three days.

If your trailering down, try and help out those that have come by boat,if you have room for rides to and from places...It always works out pretty good.

I suspect your all doing minor tweeking and finishing up stuff to get ready. You all have the contact info and the last updates. Anything else you need or question, Just email me directly.

Looking forward to seeing everyone and boating with you all ...

I expect we may do a relaxing run out on the river friday afternoon with some of you, swimming, and joking and relaxing before dinner:))Lets see how that all goes.

Hi all,

We have another cancellation. Kevin was unable to get his steering fixed in time so we are down a second boat, along with Blackdog. Stuff happens sometimes I guess.

Kudos to Mark who chewed up a prop last week in Pohick Bay but will find away to make it down and be part of the fleet.

I am always amazed by the dedication some people show to do what ever it takes to make this even and keep there committment.

I helped Kamie drop her boat in last evening, and she purred all the way to her place. We also set up the last I command guage on Das Boat to show more accurate gas information abd to show usage as it happens. pretty cool stuff these I command guages.

Weather continues to show 1 ft or less for driday, sat. and sunday, with some isolated thunderstorms....so I think this will all work out weather wise. Storms this time of the year on the Potomac and the bay are usually late afternoon, after we are all done each day:))

Anyone want to join us, we have one room availible now...and a few campsites...Cheryl has been great about free lodging for all boaters in the safety fleet. WE gave someone a air conditioned cabin even:)))

Email me...tanks, Henry

I want to know how Mark busted a prop in Pohick Bay. That whole place is pure mud.

Anyway, I'll see you all late on Friday night at the motel.

From NOAA as of late Thursday afternoon:

Fri...SW winds 5 to 10 kt. Waves 1 ft. Scattered showers and tstms.
Fri Night...S winds 5 to 10 kt. Waves 1 ft. A chance of showers and tstms.
Sat...SW winds 5 to 10 kt. Waves 1 ft. A chance of showers and tstms.
Sat Night...SW winds 5 to 10 kt. Waves 1 ft.
Sun...W winds 5 to 10 kt. Waves 1 ft. A chance of showers and tstms.

That's about as good as we can expect, I guess.

Tides:
06/05 Sat 02:21 AM 0.44 L
06/05 Sat 08:15 AM 1.3 H
06/05 Sat 02:45 PM 0.29 L
06/05 Sat 09:04 PM 1.33 H

Note that the ebb starts right about when the race starts, and ends right about when the race ends. So of course, we'll have max ebb currents right in the mid-race, and in the mid-river where the current is fastest. It's going to be just like last year, with all the swimmers getting pulled toward the bay. We'll need to start off in the morning making some upriver distance. Henry, you might want to talk about this (or have Cheryl or Chris do so) at the Friday dinner so the swimmers and kayakers know what's going on.

Bob, good post...already have talked to them and will again as we will need to be at least 20 degrees over to compensate me thinks...WE learned a lot from mistakes made last year.....

We have two swimmers with there own boats qualifying for the English Channel Swim with this crossing....they should be outragous to see ....

Weather is as good as it can get...and we will sqeak through between early morning showers and later afternoon storms...as always:)

CG AUx will send three not two boats, 1 sail, 2 power...

"Spouter" is here all the way from Toledo Ohio!!! What a gorgeous 22 that is!!!! BIG!!!!Gorgeous!!!!Pristine!!!Kamie got dropped in yesterday and purred all the way back home:)

Not sure how Mark crushed a prop out there in Pohick, but he will be there criushed prop and all and you can ask him!

We are ready. Had a huge storm here around 7pm ...I mean unusally strong...60MPH winds, hail...expect rain till the am, then were off.....

We are gonna have a high old time:))))

Were ready!!!!
