The Chesapeake Bay Swim is this Sunday, 6/13. In the past, Scott Leidig has coordinated the Whaler crew, but he retired from that job this year so things are a bit, well, uncoordinated. Weather permitting, I'm planning to show up anyway to see how I can help out. You're welcome to come to!The 1-mile swim starts from Hemingway's at the Kent Island foot of the bridge, with a planned start time of 7:45 am. I'm planning to launch from Matapeake State Park by about 7. The main 4.4-mile race starts at 8:00 (which is curious, because the last 1-mile wave starts at 8:05, so this year both races will be run concurrently, which has never happened before) from the beach at Sandy Point State Park on the mainland, and should finish by noon. In the past, the Whaler team has served as snack boats for the swimmers, and has been the innermost group of boats responsible for retrieving tired swimmers from the water and either running them to shore or transferring them to the larger escort boats. It's a fun day. Right now the forecast is calling for scattered thunderstorms. As long as it looks like afternoon storms, I'll head out. If it degrades to morning storms, then I'll just sit this one out -- I presume they'll have to cancel the race anyway. So, if you're interested, come on out. Hope to see you there! -Bob

Okay, I gotta say I was a little lonely out there today. I saw one other Whaler, a 170 "Thanks To U", working as the second snack boat. But the boat boss was happy to have me, and I worked the 1-mile swim then patrolled the 4-mile swim. We gotta do better next year, folks.-Bob |

Bob- I had other plans for this weekend (sailing) but did work the Bay Swim a few years ago. Will get it on calendar for next year. Any other Whaler owners in the area interested in working this race in 2011? Kevin |

Sorry I couldn’t attend, my father had surgery Friday and I was helping out around the house. I would be interested in participating next year. Maybe we could all do a “post-swim” get together at our house afterwards. It is approximately 5 miles south of Matapeake and there is a community ramp. Something to consider, although a year away… |

The post-race get-together is a nice idea! |

Bob,If you are volunteering to coordinate for next year’s event :-), I will definitely see what I can do about the house/post-race get together. Actually, maybe we could get Whalertowne to get involved (not volunteering them though). I will speak to them about it at their owner’s event in the next couple of weeks. If you are going to the owners event and need a place to launch, let me know, but the ramp is on the other side of the island.
