I can not make it to the Put In Bay GTG since that is my daughter's birthday.

Anyone interested in doing a ride the day before Mother's Day (5/12) or the weekend before?

I don't really care where, could be Lake St Clair (never boated there), Port Huron (never boated there) or up here on Saginaw Bay.

We could do Lake Michigan as well, but that lake can be a little more tempermental.

Now that Outré is waxed, she's ready to hit the water

I don't own a Whaler at the moment, but I'm interested if you're willing to be joined by a Pursuit. I can show you around Port Huron, the St. Clair River, or the flats on the north end of Lake St. Clair. I've never boated on Saginaw Bay or the Saginaw River, but I'd like to see them by boat one of these days.

Bump

Still planning on doing something on one of these weekends, whichever one has the nicer weather.

Bob - I'm still up for boating on either weekend. However, I'm currently dealing with a broken hand, and may not be able to bring my boat unless I can find somebody to help me launch it and load it back onto the trailer. I wouldn't mind riding along with somebody else, either. Again, if you want to start learning the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair, I'd be glad to show you around. I'd also be happy to learn the Saginaw River area from you.

Kevin,

If you need a "HAND" let me know and I would be glad to join. Right now both Whalers are in states of repair so splashing one of my own my be tough. Sundays or Saturday afternoons work best as Saturday Mornings and now filled with Soccer.

The Lake St Clair and Harsen's Island cruise is a good run. The Port Huron Area is a good spot as well because you can run on the lake if it is nice, or the river if the lake is crappy..

It will probably just be myself and my son on my Outrage so there will be room if someone needs a ride.

It would be nice if I could get a stern seat in time for the run, but the chances of that are not too good.

I just ordered my stern seat and hopefully it will be in next week so I can have it installed for Saturday the 12th. It looks like that will be the weekend since no one has expressed any particular preference.

I'm hoping to visit the Revenge tomorrow and see how tight things still are at the storage facility. I'm on furlough May 8-12 and would like to hit the waves during that time if at all possible....I'll continue to watch this thread

Teak Oil, what kind of stern seat did you get?

Pat its good that you may be able to get the boat wet soon.

I called Art's Auto in MA and Wm Mills in NY for quotes on a seat and the both had a minimum of a 6 week wait, with 2 months being more likely. Not being a patient person, I decided to try a Specialty Marine seat which I should receive in about a week and a half. Unfortunately they only make the seat 66.5" wide for the 18 outrage, and not 72" like my 22 would need. I decided to go for it anyways so I could have the seat this summer, which will be a busy one for my Whaler.

I am still pretty excited to get it in.

Bob,

I will let you judge it for yourself once you get it but, everyone who I have talked to who has bought and upholstered item from Specialty Marine has regretted it after 2-3 years. The vinyl and stitching lacks OEM quality and does not waer the best. Some have reported the foam is of low quality and holds water too. Once waterlogged the wood is doomed.

If you do not like the seat and decide to send it back you could order a Post Classic style stern seat like what was found in the 21 and 24 Outrages. They can be sourced from Anderson's in Florida and have it covered in the Classic Vinyl and piping. If you call they can send you images.

I have seen 1 or 2 22's with those seats in them and it is a really nice looking piece. I will see if I can find images.

Yeah Jeff, I have read some of the mixed reviews of their upholstery work and cushion material. There is a reason that Specialty's seat is $500 cheaper so I know that going in.

It is also puzzling why Specialty doesn't normally recommend the rear bar for the seat but they do carry it and I will be installing that as well. If I can get five years out of the upholstery I will be happy, but as I said earlier patience is not my strong point, especially on the cusp of summer.

I also ordered a bow cushion for the kids, it was their favorite spot on the Montauk.

My seat arrived yesterday and other than the desert tan being a little too tan I am pretty happy with it. I would have it installed in time for next weekend so if anyone needs a ride I will have some room.

The weather forecast has jumped around a bit, going from 60 to 70 and rain to now rain. Right now the forecast calls for 68 and a chance of afternoon showers.

I have no problem with a little rain, I just didnt want to adventure out into a all day downpour. As of right now I am planning on being on Lake St Clair Saturday morning. Any recommendations for a good starting point?

Bob - Coming from Birch Run, your best bet is probably the Michigan DNR's Selfridge boat launch. Tkae I-75 south to M-59, then you basically take M-59 east, straight to the lake.

Here's a link to a Google map with directions to Anglers Point Marina, which is just across the street from the Selfridge launch: http:/ / maps. google. com/ maps?saddr=Birch+ Run,+ Michigan& daddr=Angl ers+ Point+ Marina,+ Chesterfield,+ MI& hl=en& ll=42. 677892,-82. 937851 & spn=0. 408892,0. 887833& sll=42. 630399,-82. 821014& sspn=0. 003197,0. 006936& geocode=Far0kwIdLWcB-ylvq51zO5IjiDFmXgqH6DIPmA%3BFSuAigIdVkgQ-y E4bCIgqHx9nin1lq3xAiIliDF0FE_SvIf8mA& oq=Anglers+ & t=h& mra=ls& z=11

From the Selfridge launch, I would recommend that you head out to the Middle Channel, take that north to the St. Clair River, see the sights up the river for a while, then head back down the river taking the North Channel to Anchor Bay and then back to Selfridge. There is a no-wake zone in the North Channel, so it is best to transit the North Channel on your down-bound run. Here's a link to a map of the no-wake zones in the area: http://www.abya.org/no-wake.htm The no-wake zone in the North Channel is marked by buoys. None of the other no-wake zones are marked.

Here's a link to an interactive chart of the lake which you can use to find the coordinates for various features, services and attractions: http://www.marinecruiser.com/chart.html

If you don't want to head up to the St. Clair River, you can head south and check out the Clinton River and/or Metro Beach Metropark. The Clinton River is not very exciting. Metro Beach can be a good spot for people and boat watching.

If you're interested in seeing freighters up close, head for the South Channel and take that north up to the St. Clair River.

I'm still not certain whether I can make it out there or not on Saturday. I will let you know when I know.

If you're going to be near, or crossing, the Canadian border, even if you don't touch land, you need to read this.

Note that these are the "Simplified" procedures...

K Albus posted 05-10-2012 02:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for K Albus  Send Email to K Albus
There is plenty to see and do on Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River without crossing the border. I generally try to stay on the U.S. side of the border. However, even if you cross the border, you don't need to call in if you are traveling directly from one point in the U.S. to another point in the U.S. This precisely what Jim and I did last weekend.

Dave--Please repost that notice about reporting by telephone to Canadian authorities as soon as you enter their water in the North Channel 2012 trip planning thread. It ought to be fodder for a good discussion there.

I don't think I can go boating this weekend. This is the first weekend in quite a while where Chris's schedule and my schedule align with two days off together. I think there are some household chores in my future.

Well I didn't make it out to Lake St Clair but we weathered our first small storm on Saginaw Bay and it paid off with a 3 man limit for walleye

Nice haul! I'm surprised you went out. It looked pretty ugly down here on Saturday. The wind and wave forecast for Lake St. Clair didn't look bad, but the onshore forecast called for thunderstorms and winds in the 20s. I didn't get any thunderstorms or high winds in my area (about 20 miles due west of Lake St. Clair), but it did rain on and off all day.

We watched the weather about five miles away right in Bay City, so by staying out we avoided the worst of it. Everyone who headed in for the "safety" of the Saginaw River went right into the teeth of the storm. My 8 year old had a blast in the forward shelter lol
