August is drawing to a close and it is time to start planning the 2013 Mullett Lake Rendezvous. Elsa and I are looking forward to hosting it again this year and we are sticking to the traditional date of the first weekend in October (Friday October 4th through Sunday October 6th).
-Friday Night Dinner at Pier 33 on the Cheboygan River. It is located where M33 crosses the river. It is easily accessed by both boat and car and has plenty of dock space.
-Saturday we could do the traditional Inland Waterway cruise or if the weather is good and the average boat size in the fleet is up to it, we could do a cruise in the Straits of Mackinac.
-Saturday Evening dinner at my cottage for a fun evening of Whaler talk, pictures and good times.
-Sunday Morning more boating “As the spirits move us”

So who is in for this year?
-Don

Same here, never been able to do one yet but always on calendar. Educator Ellen has tough schedule first week each October. Might work sans boat.

Gail and i will be in St Helena, CA (wine country, no less!) for a wedding, after touring down the coast from Portland for a week.

Have fun and we will be thinking of the group.

I haven't check with my neighbor yet, there is a 99.99% probability that we will have the same arrangement.

The solution is simple. Come a week early and stay the week!

A cruise to Mackinaw sounds interesting and would be a nice variation on the traditional inland cruise. I think we could get dock space at the State of Michigan marina in Mackinaw City for an hour or two and get lunch up there. But the inland route is always fun, too. The weather is a big influence.
Hoosier posted 09-16-2013 07:02 PM ET (US)     Profile for Hoosier  Send Email to Hoosier
I vote for a cruise on Lake Huron, maybe going under the Bridge. Lunch in either Mak
inaw City or St. Ignace would work. Since Don and I have "bigger" boats, the Crooked River is not all that attractive to me since I'm not all that comfortable with the twins, the tight manueuvers are a little "uncomfortable".

David,

I can say running on the Crooked River with our 23 was fun but, it was a work out and took a lot of Wheel work. Also where times I say a fair amount of mud in the prop wash. I doubt Don could or would want to run the 25 on plane through there.

Jeff, your are right. If we go to Mackinaw I will take the 25 Walkaround. If we do the Inland Waterway I will use my Dauntless 17.

Dave, if we do the Inland Waterway your are quite welcome to use my 15 sport. That boat is completely at home on the Crooked River!

Right now the 23 isn't "lake worthy" so I might have to bring the V20. I'm hoping to get UPNoth next week to fix the hardtop and head. If I get that stuff done I'll bring her so we can do side-by-side comparisons. That should be interesting since your 25 is a "new" top on an old (classic) bottom half, the 23 is new, top and bottom.

I am scheduled to teach both Saturday and Sunday but it looks like it might cancel. If it does I am free.

I just back home from "up north," and the fall colors are really starting to pop. We should have good color for the rendezvous. Now let's hope for good weather.

It would be great if someone has access to a projector so we can do our traditional slide show after dinner.

As a backup I will bring a 24" computer monitor. While not as good as a projector it is better than a bunch of us trying to look at a laptop.

Since John has such a long drive to come to this gathering, it might be best for you to bring the projector. That way John won't have to take the time to go out of his way to pickup a projector.

Mary and I spent the last week clearing our schedule of an event on the 5th, that's finally been accomplished. However, our 2 for 4 success on this event is not very good, and if we say we'll be there and then possibly have to bail out again due to the forecast we're down to 2 for 5. We're going to pull up short of saying we're in so we won't have to officially cancel later and drive our batting average even lower.

Sorry Comrades, we may have been this event's last shot at having a legitimizing Mercury in attendance...

I don't thing LHG can complain about feeling left out. In the 10+ years that I have been having a Mullett Lake Rendezvous he has not come once.

Now he may feel uncomfortable with the pole barn full of boats I have with Evinrude motors.

I downloaded the GRIB model forecasts; looks like some moisture on Saturday in the vicinity, but it might be off to the North. Sunday morning early there is rain, then clearing. I will check the models daily to see what they have to show.

I was up last weekend and the weather couldn't have been better,75 degrees, no wind etc. Too bad you can't predict a year in advance what the weather will be.
One year I want to join you guys, as I have a place on Round Point and keep Flash there,(1985 Montauk).
I pulled it, winterized it, and put it in the barn... however, since it has the E-TEC, I can launch it any time and winterize it so easily it hardly matters.
Take that, you 4- strokers.

Jim,

What do the GRIB models say about the winds? That can be a major factor in the straits.

Thursday's GRIB models improve. No precipitation on Saturday. Rain on Sunday morning ending about 1 p.m.

Wind on Saturday from the East, 5 to 10 MPH. Wind in Northern Lake Huron and offshore (to the East) is 15-MPH.

On Sunday, after the front and precipitation blows through, wind shifts to West at 10, and West 15 in central northern Lake Michigan.

I have mixed feeling for choice of routes. Since I will be arriving on Friday, and since I usually launch the boat on Friday, I would like to get a consensus on the Saturday morning boating plan so I know where to launch or perhaps to not launch.

Don--which boat are you planning on using of Saturday? Big or small?

With John bringing a 17-footer, we would need very calm winds and waves for a run in Lake Huron to Mackinaw. But we might have that on Saturday.

I usually launch at that shallow ramp on Mullet Lake. But that is assuming we are going on the inland route toward Indian River. It will be helpful for me if we can reach a consensus so I know what to do on Friday.

jimh posted 10-03-2013 08:01 AM ET (US)     Profile for jimh  Send Email to jimh
By the way, I am totally fine with the traditional inland route toward Indian River. The last few years it has been so cold and windy on Saturday that we got a very late start and did not get much past Indian River.

This morning Elsa and I took a short cruise into the straits. Conditions were wind ESE at 13. The waves were quite manageable for all but the smallest of whalers. Given that Jim's forecast calls for lighter winds I think the straits would be very doable.

I am game for either route and I think both routes are open to us.

-Don

jimh posted 10-03-2013 09:53 PM ET (US)     Profile for jimh  Send Email to jimh
When we arrive late Friday, we will keep the boat on the trailer. That way we can all decide at the last minute which course to run.

If the weather permits, I think it would be fun to take a cruise to Mackinaw. I guess if we do that we would end up hauling out again on Saturday. But we can work out those details as we go.

See everyone on Friday.

jimh posted 10-03-2013 10:44 PM ET (US)     Profile for jimh  Send Email to jimh
Tonight's GRIB model shows rain late Friday, ending on Saturday morning early, then more rain, but passing to the North around noon. Wind is SE 5.

More rains comes in late Saturday night, but passes through by 11 a.m. Sunday. The wind shifts to the West. It will be a big blow on Sunday on Lake Michigan; the wind is forecast to 30-MPH around Beaver Island. Inland wind will be 15-MPH SW.

It looks like we have a window of no rain on Saturday. Sunday should be okay after 11 a.m., but very high winds on the open water of Lake Michigan. I think on Sunday it will be howling through the Straits.

As the song says:

quote:

No Wind.

No Rain.

No Winter's storm,

Can stop me now.

This sums up the conditions on Saturday. Not to be stopped, the younger and older element of our rendezvous crew launched their 17-footer, and ran our usual course from Indian River, to Burt Lake, to the Crooked River, to Alanson, and return.

Except for a brief respite on Saturday afternoon, the three days of the Mullet Lake 2013 Fall Rendezvous were three days of lousy boating weather: cloudy, no sun, lots of wind, rain, thunderstorms, lightning, rain--did I mention rain? It even rained all the time on the drive home on the highway. And then it rained all Sunday night, too. The Great Lakes experienced the biggest, ugliest low-pressure system hanging around for three days that I can remember. This was the tenth rendezvous, and I guess having significant rain only once in ten years is a good overall average, particularly for the Fall.

In spite of the lousy weather, which kept my boat on its trailer all weekend, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Don and Elsa were the usual wonderful hosts. We had a cabin full of good company. We had fine dining, both at the restaurant and at the cabin. And we had great the company and camaraderie of our Boston Whaler Great Lakes Cruising Cub companions. We had a fine slide shows of hundreds of good pictures, taken on two GLBWCC cruises, one to the Rideau Canal and the other to Isle Royale.

Speaking of mythology:

Did you hear that Whaler owners prefer Mercury to any other outboard engine? Yeah...it seems that they all buy them new with Mercury outboards. They overwhelmingly choose to put Mercury on the back. Isn't that an amazing show of brand preference? Holy Cow...and I don't mean Baal.

Following the lead of THE WEATHER CHANNEL, I am going to give a name to this Fall Storm that brought high winds and rain to our rendezvous. This was Storm S2, after S2 Yachts, makers of PURSUIT boats.
djahncke posted 10-07-2013 11:24 PM ET (US)     Profile for djahncke  Send Email to djahncke
Jim,

Despite what your weather RADAR told you there was very little rain on Mullett on Monday. The day was mild with mixed bright sunshine and some dark clouds. There was a strong NW wind making the straits rather rough. However, on the Inland Waterway the wind was no issue.

On a few occasions we had some light sprinkles that lasted for five minutes or less. I chalk this up to what I call the Boat Retrieval Effect. Every time I put one of my boats away in the fall, there is nice weather within 30 minutes of retrieving the boat. This morning they pulled my 25 WA and the sun came out. After a few hours the sky turned dark again. I retrieve my Dauntless and the sun comes back and stayed for the rest of the afternoon.

jimh posted 10-09-2013 09:09 PM ET (US)     Profile for jimh  Send Email to jimh
Don--Yes, I think you and I and our boats are out of phase with the weather, to use an electrical engineering term I am sure you will appreciate. This afternoon I hauled my boat over to my storage location and told the yard guy that I was done for the year, to put it away in a safe part of the warehouse. Of course, it was a perfectly beautiful day, temperature in the high 60's, clear blue sky, and very light wind.

But in a way, we are always glad to see boating season end. We pack in so much boating during the short season here that we are ready for a respite. And we have a backlog of other projects to work on. For several years now we have ended our boating season with the Mullet Lake Rendezvous, and it has always been a fun cruise and rendezvous, no matter what the weather.

Thanks again for hosting us all. That Saturday night dinner of Sauerbraten and Spatzle with that delicious gravy with hint of ginger was just fantastic. One of Elsa's best! Tell her it was top-notch.

Don and Elsa are such great hosts. Thanks again for a wonderful time and great meals.

Don thanks again for going with us on the Crooked River run.

It was fun to see the group.

Sunday afternoon we headed over to Sturgeon Bay WI to see my friend Bob. We spent Monday on Lake Michigan, sun shine but a little windy. We put 62 miles on the EMMARIE JEAN that day.

We arrived home on Tuesday at 4:00pm.

Here are some pictures of the trip.
