You are all invited to the St. John's River Rendezvous, October, 3-5, 2014. We will meet and stay with Riviera Resort and Marina in historic DeLand, Florida. www.rivieraresort.net for directions and reservations. They have blocked out rooms for us. All rooms have full kitchens and will be $182.25 for Friday and Saturday nights.($91/night) They also have full hook-ups are our motorhome friends available for $28.00 per night. They have a launch ramp, but for larger boats, a public ramp is at SR. 44 in DeLand. We will all meet on Friday afternoon, under the pavilion or by the pool. Friday evening, you may choose to explore historical DeLand and one if it's fine eateries, or simply cook in your room. On Saturday morning around 10am, we will make a run north on the river, for Silver Glenn. It is an 18 mile run, with only a couple of idle zones. Upon return from Silver Glenn, we will have a pitch-in for dinner. There is a large smoker that will be available for our use as well as grills. This is a family event, and everyone is welcome. For questions feel free to contact me at magicbrsh@bellsouth.net
Cut-off for this event will be August 22nd. This will give us a head count and know how many boats will be in the run.
Looking forward to hosting this event and seeing all of you soon!

Janis

Sounds great Janice. This is the first one on the river I have seen organized since the last one I did in 2006 further up river. Thanks for organizing!

I am in for this rendevouz. The St. Johns is a beautiful waterway with lots to do. The springs are amazing if one has never seen true first magnitude springs. Looks like the venue is first class also.

Nick...fix your boat already! And Minnow, it would be great if you could join us on the 'southern end' of the river. Srabb, hope you can join us as well.

I will post a more detailed agenda closer to the trip. In the case of bad weather, we will run south through the deep water old logging canals to Blue Springs State Park.

Regret I am going to have to cancel my plans. My niece and god-child has decided to get married in Richmond that weekend. Also, my oldest daughter is headed off to college this August and they designated this same weekend as family visit weekend. Lots of tough choices to be made - looks like we will have to split our family to cover both these other events.

OK, finally got off my ass and booked a slip and a room for Friday till Sunday. I will bring a small grill and the fryer for all the fish caught. Also, some pork shoulders for the smoker. Janice has told me that she is going to have some of her landlocked buddies tend the smoker all day while we are playing on the river. That being said, I suspect that appetizers, side dishes and dessert will be the most needed items for Saturday nights dinner. We can boil corn on the fryer as well.

Just a short post to keep this thread in the 10 day window. I have heard that a poker run is planned for Saturday which should be fun as long as Janis doesn't pull a Nick and forget the cards. I need to bring the tickets for the 50/50 on Saturday night. Also, there will be no keg as we are going to Silver Glen Springs which is a state park and I will get arrested with a keg of beer. That being said,if there are any $$ left over from this event it will be donated to the dogs....

See y'all soon..

Looks like this will be a good time. Do you folks have this rendezvous on the St. John's every year or does this move around?

This looks like it would be a fun event for me to trailer to next year.

fno posted 09-23-2014 05:55 PM ET (US)     Profile for fno  Send Email to fno
If we have a good time and I don't get arrested, then yes it may become a regular event. Homosassa in April has historically been the annual event but we wanted to change it up a bit for some variety and to get more than one thing on the calendar for the year. There have been other events in the past also that have not been repeated like: St Johns/Jacksonville day trip, Suwannee River weekend (hotel was bad), Kice Island weekend (too many bugs, camping).

Janis,
We were hoping that Joan could get away from a commitment made many months ago but it did not happen. We will not be able to make the St Johns get-together. I was really looking forward to it. I had the boat on the river last week and checked it out. All was OK.

JANIS,
I notified the resort that we will not be checking in. Sorry about not being able to be there but Joan just cannot get out of a commitment made several months ago.

I guess I might as well put the Whaler up for sale as we just don't use it that much. The 2004 motor has about 120 hours on it. Are you still interested?

Jim, don't despair! Keep the damn boat and use it to keep the dog stuff at bay.... I've known you two for almost ten years now and if you do not have a means to put water under your feet once in a while you may go POSTAL on some innocent bystander.

Some of you may have seen on the news that the St. John's River is flooding. I have checked with FWC and they advised me that we only have one emergency idle zone in Astor. They advised me that we want to be conscious of our wake in all areas where there are houses. If anything changes, I will post it here.

Frank,
The boat needs someone to take care of it. We do take it out on the river when we can but we have so much going on all of the time that even that does not happen often enough. Usually only when we have company. So, come visit so we have an excuse to show you the rivers using the boat. April is getting close.

Jim,
I noticed you are retired. So am I. I had good intentions of making this trip, but I've got too much going on at this time. I'm also waiting on the shipping of an outboard I bought for my 15 footer. It should have arrived on Saturday. My 13 footer has 57 hours in the '08 outboard I bought new in '08. I had more time to do stuff when I worked full time.

Rich,
We had to help put on a dog show in Ocala and finding help was very difficult. We are all volunteers and we offered to help out months ago so we were stuck. It was a great show and I am glad we were involved.

Our 20ft Outrage needs a lot more use because sitting idle is not good for a boat and motor. I have spent too much time just checking out the electrical and cooling systems so they are ready to go if we get the opportunity.

Retirement is great.

In summary of this epic event...We all had a memorable time. Like Frank said, the food was wonderful and the drinks seemed endless, but the weather and river were simply magnificent. We will schedule this event again for the first week in October 2015. We had 8 boats, 22 people and were able to raise $350 for the South East Volusia County Humane Society. Thank you all for coming to support our favorites; our love for Boston Whalers, and our love for our furry and feathered friends. Now, let's all post pictures!
Fondly,

Brings up great memories. Born and raised in So Fla, and growing up in the 70s and 80s my family had a vacation house located about 2 miles north up the shoreline from Silver Glen on what was then-called Yellow Bluff Road. 300 foot dock to get us past the shallows and water hyacinth. Kept a 1970-ish 13 foot whaler with 35 HP Johnson. Spend all day every day on the water - Silver Glen, Juniper Creak (to Alexander Springs), Salt Springs, down to Deland, up to Palatka. Fishing the naval bombing range in the middle of the lake. Tending crab pots, catfish trotlines, fishing, skiing, etc. What great fun.
