To All Members of the Classic Whaler Forum

Here is your chance to show Jim Hebert how much we appreciate his dedication, hard work and using his own money bringing us this invaluable Forum and Website.

There is no other place you can find this wealth of information on Classic Boston Whalers, for that matter, Boston Whalers in general! We thought a special "Award" for Jim Hebert was in order. The site has received well over a million hits in less than six months, and it's time to give recognition to the man who has done it all -- !!

As some of you know Jim has just purchased a beautiful 1987 Revenge 20 Walk-Through, with twin Yamaha 70's. After some discussion amongst a few "old" timers and knowing that Jim was going to have to put off buying canvas for her until next year, (think we all know how much a new boat rocks the piggy bank) the idea dawned on us why not ask all members of the forum who can afford a small contribution to do so, believing you all would heartily agree. Then we could kill two birds with one stone, Jim can get new Mills Canvas now, instead of having to wait (Fall is coming on and he really needs it). Plus, this gesture will show him just how much he is appreciated by all of us, for bringing this invaluable asset to the Internet for all Whaler enthusiasts.

We have secured a substantial discount from William Mills & Sons for Jim's canvas, which is their contribution to this recognition award. The set will include the Flying (bimini) Top with stainless frame, Windshield, Port and Starboard side Curtains, and the rear drop Curtain, each with its own boot --- approximate cost with shipping $2000. Any funds, which we collect, that might be in excess will be given to Jim to for other needed items on the boat.

Ok the "meat and potatoes" --- Just $25.00 is all we're asking since we have so many activity members. We felt that this small amount would be enough to accomplish the goal and easily affordable by all. If you would like to contribute more please feel free to do so. (I know some will since their usage and involvement is pretty high)

Here is all you have to do, address a letter to Larry Goltz, and send your check for $25.00 (or more) made out to me Thomas Zeno. We are doing this for security reasons Larry gets the checks in Chicago and can't cash them until he sends them to me for the Mills purchase in New Jersey, he will also handle the accounting because I can't add “two” well --- chuckle. ---- His address:

Lawrence H Goltz
JimH Appreciation
P O Box 1241
Chicago IL 60690-1241

That's all there is to it folks ---- I know all of you will participate, pretty darn inexpensive for what you have been and will be receiving in return from this asset don't yeah think!!! --------

All contributors real names and or forum names will be placed on the site, that way Jim can really get the feeling just how much he is admired and appreciated by all of us members.

Best Regards
Larry Goltz (lhg)
Tom Zeno (bigz)
Clark Roberts

Just a note to let everybody know that JimH was not involved in this idea, which was originally intended to be a total surprise for him. But it seemed that using E-mail alone to contact people was a major, and inefficient task, so we decided we HAD to tell Jim what we were up to. I personally called him, telling him of our award intentions, and he was surprised, amazed and thrilled. I told him I only let him in on the secret because we wanted to use the Forum to simplify things. He said fine. So when he comes back from his vacation next Monday, he'll see what been going on!

Let me say up front that the whole idea is Larry's and Tom's. My only contribution was a little proof reading! They have included my name under the credits and I'm honored! I'll take anything I can get (when you get to be my age, you will also... heh, heh) and kudos to Tom Zeno and Larry Goltz... couple of great guys... Happy Whalin'... Clark... Spruce Creek Navy

Guys, I left a message saying that I would contribute to the fund and it was deleted, maybee this was accidental, maybee not? Does anyone know if it was. I printed it out to get the names and addresses to send the money to, so I know it originally came up. What gives here. Did I say something wrong again? I will write it again and you tell me what you think(mind you this is just cheek in gum fun): I might just have a few bucks laying around for my good buddy Jim! I`m in. I`m glad to see Jim bought a pre-Brunswick Whaler! Reeeeeegards-Jack Graner. I respect Jim highly, and just have fun with it all!

Great idea! I'm in!

Jack, another missing post? Maybe you ought to send TWO checks in case one of those gets lost ;-)

Of course based on the amount of time I spend here I feel I "owe" a lot more than one check myself. This award is the best investment I've made in my Whaler since I bought it a month ago.

It's been awfully nice to know that if I questions about my boat that Jim and his site had me "covered". It's great to be able to return the favor and know that my contribution is going toward a useful gift that will keep him "covered".

Excellent idea!! I'm in, checks going in the mail tonight. I read more then I contribute but I feel its only worth writing if I have something of value to add. My whaler restoration is coming along nicely, thanks to the many people on this forum and Jims relentless effort.
bigz posted 08-30-2000 07:28 AM ET (US)     Profile for bigz

Hi all and a big thanks for all the support the first day.

We just wanted to clarify the cost estimate of $2000 --- it is just that an estimate because Mills hasn't come back with a firm price yet --- might have it today I hope.

It will be less than $2000, we had to use a figure since we would very much like to get this wrapped up before mid-September. With Jim on vacation this week we felt it would be a great time to launch the program even though he knows about it . I am sure it will be a pleasant surprise when he returns to see all these supporting post!

Mills will not manufacture until we can commit just how much we have in contributions --- hopefully with over 200 members it will not be a problem purchasing the full set --- however if this goal isn't achieved we will purchase what we have money for letting Jim Hebert decide on what pieces he wants ---

Just thought I'd let you all know Mills is expense even with a discount!!! --- chuckle --

Best Regards,

Tom, Larry and Clark

Tom(bigz) do you know if Jim is still monitoring his site while on vacation? Do you know if my first post on here was deleted? Just curious as I don`t think I said anything bad? If it was an accident,O.K., but if it wasn`t, I don`t appreciate it, as I was just teazing again. Please respond. I really, really, appreciate this wonderful site that Jim works so hard on. And I really want to contribute to the Award to show my appreciation, but I want to know if I was deleted on purpose again or just an accident? Please respond-Jack Graner.

Just came in from a perfect one hour sunset cruise on Oneida Lake in my little Sport 13. Wish you all could have been here for the sunset tonight. The sunset cruises may be the only thing better than this web site about my little Whaler, so I want to be counted in for this opportunity to thank Jim for his work on the site. Will mail my share tomorrow and I hope others will join in. Dave

Super folks! We have about 30 commitments as of this morning --- wow all these post will be greatly appreciated by Jim on his return as "dfmcintyre" exclaimed in his commitment statement!

Let's keep the push on --- we are on a roll-- let's grab some more folks and get this over the top ---

Remember this isn't about "paying" Jim one red cent this is an appreciation award for all the hard work, long hours and realization by us members " that there is no such thing as a free lunch" --- Jim has put out his own money to bring together this community of Whaler enthusiasts --- not a single commercial sponsor involved -- and your contribution to the award canvas set says "Hey Jim thank you for all you are doing and will be doing for us--- it is greatly appreciated"!

Best Regards,

Tom, Larry and Clark ---

I had better post my own testimonial -- thanks to Jim and Company at Classic Whaler, I learned what a huge mistake it would be to sell my classic Outrage 18. Good thing Denver isn't a hot whaler market! I'm just back from two weeks in northern Minnesota and now look forward to a trip to Lake Powell with the trailer upgraded with keel rollers to Classic Whaler spec. (the teak is looking awesome too!) Thanks Jim.

I certainly take more enjoyment and satisfaction from Whaler Forum than I do each day from public radio, and we've been antenna-heads down our way for years. And I bet everyone here gets more enjoyment from the Forum than they do from "free" television. So count me in. The mail went out this morning. Thanks a lot, Jim.

this because it's a much simpler site).
