Have a two year old 26 Outrage with a transom mounted transducer that has come off four times. Want to explore having a bronze thru-hull installed. Any problems doing this on a Whaler? Thanks,

Considering your boat is only two years into its ten-year warranty on the hull, I would seek a Whaler dealer to advise and consent to something like this. You may find you have affected the hull warranty if you randomly drill a large hole from the keel to the cockpit.

I have a recollection that the newer OR's have a recessed area designed to accommodate thru hull transducers. You might confirm with BW.

I got this response from Whaler a while ago, I'm not sure if it is applicable to the 26 OR.

"There are two solid points on the hull to allow a thru hull fitting on the 23'Outrage. On the port side the livewell pickup is installed there. If you look through the battery compartment door, there is a recessed, circular section that is about 6" across (recessed about 1"). A thru-hull
transducer can be mounted here."

That same through hull area can also be used for a shoot through area. You could probably use your existing transducer to shoot through. Make a vertical well of PVC pipe into which your transducer will fit. Mount the well in the circular hull depression, suspend the transducer an inch from the bottom and fill with Mineral Oil. At a slotted PVC end cap that holds the cable and suspends the transducer.

bsmotril,

It sounds like you have done this. What kind of transducer did you use and what where/are the results? Can you compare the performace of shoot thru hull vs. transom mount on OR's?

Thanks for any input.

I did this with the standard transom transducer that came with the Bottomline Tournament 310. I don't fish much in water deeper than 400', and I noticed no difference other than the auto gain level setting itself a few notches higher. Still worked fine in the deepest water I fished and no apparent loss of sensitivity. The positive change was that it detected fish and bottom at cruising speed in most any water conditions where the old transom setup did not like chop.
