The 295 Conquest has a Max rating of 600 HP. Is that advisable? I know from experience that companies are conservative on ratings to spec. their product. When in college for Mechanical Engineering professors would want us to do designs with factor of safeties of 4 (SF = 4). On the other hand in the Semiconductor industry 10 years is the standard. We want our parts to last 10 years and it is spec’d right at the life of a part. That is why with these new fly by wire controls on the New Mercury’s expect things to start needing service for electrical issues after 10 years. Although, the Automobile industry and I am sure this applies to the Marine industry they require more stringent testing than most others. Heck the testing for the Auto industry surpasses Military Standards (MIL-STD) all the time.

Considering the liability that might be incurred by Brunswick if the boat is not up to the rating, I doubt there is a problem. You can bet that most companies with product that can cause loss of life are pretty risk averse and design conservatively. I think Whaler knows what they are doing. The question raised in my mind by the rating is; What's next from Mercury and what platform will the 300 Hp outboard be built upon? BillS |
