Lot's of boating this weekend...

This was the first time I was able to get the boat out into some serious chop. I went about 25 miles running around, getting a feel for the boat handling. I was very happy with the ride. The ride is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the old Montauk hull. I was able to run comfortably at 27-30 mph through chop that would have pounded me to death.

Only mods this weekend were to the control tensioning screw. As earlier reported, the throttle tends to back off under chop. Very annoying but probably a good thing for breaking in a motor. I gave the screw one full turn. I will report back on the success....

Picked mine up during a monsoon on Saturday. Didn't care about the rain, had to test it out. Surprisingly the wife wanted to go out also. Rain and winds made for chop and not ideal conditions but it handled great and we hoped Sunday would be better weather.
Sunday was actually worse, strong winds, boat traffic and a tricky tide through the local canal (Point Pleasant, NJ) made for an interesting trip, but she handled everything with ease.
The wife wanted to blow off work today and go out again, and until Saturday she wasn't a boat person.
Will dock it later this week, it's in the driveway now. 4 or 5 neighbors already came by and said that it was their dream boat and are trying to schedule fishing trips with me.

Only compaint/issue I have (so minor I shouldn't mention it) is the height of the steering wheel. I am 6'7" and have to bend just a little to be comfortable while standing (like I said, not much of a complaint).

Will start accessorizing today and will of course check the past posts to get some advice.

thanks for the help

One full turn of the throttle friction screw was adequate...much better now.

Off to Sesuit harbor tommorrow!

The standard height of the console in a Boston Whaler center console has always been somewhat low for helmsmen over 6-ft.

On the classic Montauk you can raise the center console, and many have by using various materials as risers.

On the new 170 Montauk c.2003 it looks to me like it might also be possible to raise the center console. I don't think it is part of the deck molded piece.

Look into that and let us know what you find.

Thanks,

thanks, I will look into raising the console and let you know. Like I said, I feel like I'm complaining about a freckle on a supermodel.

it's probably a good thing that NJ is in the middle of the rainy season, I might have stayed home yesterday and today to fish if it were nice and I think the Montauk has created an sailor out of my wife.

Try putting your feet all the way into the toe kick at the bottom of the console and lean back on the RPS set at one notch back from forward. This should help eliminate "slouching" and is very comfortable.

Maximus,

How do I go about tightening the tension screw? I have the same problem/same boat.

Thanks in advance-

that sounds like a great idea, I will give it a try. it might also take some bouncing pain away from my surgically repaired knee. I can't believe I never thought of something like that.

thanks

To tighten the tension:
1. Loosen the two screws on the plastic cover at the throttle, don't try to take them out.
2. Pull cover off
3. You'll see 4 screws, take those out
4. Pull throttle out about an inch or two, you will see the nut on the left side. Jim

Thanks Jim, you beat me to it.

Don't over do it on the nut...I only moved mine about one turn and may have over done it a bit.

Good luck.

Suntop gets delivered from Mills tommorrow!
