Completed the installation of the factory fishing package on my 03 170 Montauk, excluding tackle drawer and compass. I used all Whaler supplies except for the ice chest and for that I purchased a 72 qt marine igloo. Had to install extra snaps to the igloo to accomadate all the snaps on the Whaler cushion. Makes for a nice addition to the boat. The only problem I have is the chest tends to rock back on occassion and the lid on the igloo will not open all the way due to the rod holder/back rest. Is this common to factory installation as well?

Turn the cooler around. It's the way they come rigged by the factory. Opening facing aft. :)

actually the 2004 montauk fishing package cooler opens from the forward position not aft..this is done with the use of a starboard spacer installed at the factory. If ya like I can send a pic of the factory setup.

Aquanut:

I would like a pic of the factory setup. I eventually want the cooler tie down and rod holder but I think I like the '04 setup better. In another post somebody said that he was told by the dealer that the '04 cooler tie down required fiberglass work. Why is this? I've seen this setup at the dealer and it looks like just a piece of plastic shaped to mold to the back of the cooler with a hinge in the middle so that it will fold down when not in use. Why can't I just shape a piece of starboard and bolt it to the console? Does it need some reinforcement so that it won't bend and rip out the bolts? Maybe I could reinforce it with some aluminun brackets from the bottom. Any thoughts?
