I'm trying to sort out my fuel system for the Manhattan run. Does anyone know if two 12 gallon Moeller's will fit together under the 170 RPS?

If not, how about one twelve and one six gallon tank?

I'm going to make some measurements tomorrow, but it would be nice to have some first hand experience.

Thanks,

Dennis

I think Great Bay (Seth) has twin 12 gallon tanks but don't hold me to it.

If you do a search on his user name, you may find the thread I think.

Sorry. Seth has twin 12 gallon Tempo tanks.

Here is a photo from his web album.

Thanks Seth, I saw Great Bays set-up before. Which I like. I don't think the Tempo tanks are available anymore though. Hence I wonder about the Moellers.

OOPS, a little mixup on names there. Sorry about that Casco Bay.

Actually Tempo tanks are still available.

If you do a google search for both the Tempo and then for the Moeller, you can look at the specs for size of each and compare.

The one element that is hard to gauge is the height of the fuel cap on each brand.

On defender.com I see a Moeller 12 gallon. The gas cap is tall.

I did several searches here and did not find a specific thread on a twin Moeller 12 gallon tank setup. This does not mean it hasn't been done. Just could not find it easily.

I'm interested to see if the new Tempo 12 gallon PBW tanks fit under the RPS on a Montauk 170 as well. They appear to have similar dimensions to the 12 gallon Moeller tanks I've seen but I have not researched this. The Moeller fuel caps do look very tall in the on-line pictures I've seen. My existing Tempo PBW tanks are too tall to fit under the RPS without first removing the gas caps, then screwing them back on once the tank are under the RSP. Even the low profile caps I bought from Home Depot (lawnmower replacement caps with built in vent) didn't prevent me from having to remove the caps before sliding the tank under the seat. That process, as well as having to get your hands under the RPS to secure the rear straps, switch fuel line on tanks, etc., brings me to my next point. I recently did a mod to the RPS that made life much easier. If you do plan on getting the twin PBW 12/13 gallon Moeller/Tempos, and assuming they will fit under the RPS with caps removed, you may want to try this mod to the RPS. It will allow you to easily:
a) remove/secure the fuel caps
b) Get to the rear tank straps
c) Switch the fuel hose to the other tank in a jiffy
d) Fuel your boat at the marina without removing/moving the tanks
e) See the floating fuel gauges impossibility without this mod)
f) Clean out/hose under the RPS.

Thanks for the link and reply Seth. That's a real nice solution for your tanks.

The Moeller tanks, saw them yesterday, just look too tall. I'd like to see the link for the newer designs you speak of, the ones I saw are either too wide or too tall.

I've decided to stick with the stock 6 gallon mercury cans and add two more to my repertoire. They should fit nicely in the back of the boat. Either in the stern corners or directly behind and strapped in around the RPS. If I strap them around the RPS (thinking about a 2" nylon webbing strap going all the way around the seat) I can easily run all four tanks dry without ever having to move anything but the fuel line.

Probably not the slickest installation. But everything will stay stock for a bit longer and I don't really need that much fuel all the time, I think.

This may change in the future, but for now, for this trip around Manhattan, I believe it will suffice.

The dimensions of my Tempo PBW 12 gallon tanks are as follows: 12 gallons / 45.4 liters / 20-3/8" L x 14-1/4" W x 13-3/4" H w/cap

Moeller 12 gallon dimensions:
Moeller Portable Plastic 12-Gallon Fuel Tank, 14.5"H x 14"W x 23"L

Moeller looks a little tall but maybe that is with cap measurement.

The Tempo web site is still up and the Ultra above deck line states they are made for Boston Whaler type boats. The 12 gallon tank has the same dimensions stated on their current web site as my Tempo tanks.
