The wind finally laid down enough Saturday so my wife and I were able to make it out to an area known as the Rock Pile (located SSE of Cape Hatteras). We departed Teaches Lair Marinia at 6:25 and headed out of Hatteras Inlet .... lines in at 7:20. First Mahi in the boat at 7:30. We fished the northeast/east side of the Rock in 220 to 295 feet of water. The water temp average was 75.6 with small visible surface temperature breaks. Caught all the fish on green/silver MyLures & Yozuri orange/white Deep Diver. I trolled between 6 - 7 mph slowing down every five minutes to 2 mph to let the lures sink. Slowing down produced all the strikes (7 in all). Mahi ranged from 5 - 31 lbs). Had all of them in the box by 10:20 so at which point we decided to beat the heat and headed for the marinia.

Here are some pictures of the charplotter track and videos from offshore.

Enjoy ........

With just the two of is fishing I ran 2 flat lines one shotgun green squid teaser and one orange/white yozuri 5.25" DD. Had a smoker on the yozuri that ran deep but pulled off after a 25 minute battle.

Three more weeks and I will be making that same run. I can't wait!
Thanks as always for the invaluable information.

Tom, nice catch! Must be nice to fish warm, clear water. I got the skunk off the NJ coast Saturday in the too-cool 56 degree water while striper fishing. There is actually too much bait (mossbunker) around!
Yesterday the water in my marina was 80...but not a Mahi to be seen ^_^

With the first week in Hatteras Village almost at a close I thought I'd take a minute to bring you up to date. Before I do I'd like to thank Tom (BWP) for helping me with the decision of towing the Bella down with us. The QX56 towed the 7000 lb. load very well even though I only averaged about 8 miles per gallon.

The weather has been beautiful but very windy. The wind laid down long enough on Tuesday evening for us to plan an offshore fishing trip. Wednesday morning we left Teach's Liar marina at 5:30 am. We proceeded to follow a rather large charter with lots of horsepower as we held a constant 22 MPH. Although he flatten out the chop somewhat, the swells were still very steep.

We were over the "Rock" in 178 to 280 feet of water and setup our troll. We trolled about four hours with ten other boats both private and charter. Calling it a day by noon we headed back to the marina with one 5 lb. mahi.
Later that day we check back with the fleet to see how the rest did. All the boats in the area of the drop off where we we fishing did poorly. The informed guys headed out to 35 miles and 3500' and did well as that is were the weed lines were due to the constant blow over the 3-4 day period.
This further then I feel comfortable and would not try unless we had perfect conditions.

Oh well! we will try again when the wind finally lays down.
Meanwhile we had a lot of fun today with trigger, monk, cobia, and lots of sea bass over the JC Wreck about five miles SSE of Hatteras inlet.

This Conquest has brought us out and back in some very rough conditions this past week and never wetting the crew even with some very windy conditions. We have felt very safe in this boat as it has not rolled, pitched, or heaved more then I would have expected in these less then favorable conditions.

I'll keep you updated on this thread. Picture to follow.

Great report Joe. That takes some intestinal fortitude to run to the Rock Pile. Hatteras Inlet is in pretty good shape. Glad you've had a good time. There's is just something about Hatteras that makes it such a great place to vacation.

What's is your impression of Teaches Lair?

Tom - Teach's Lair is as you described. They have a very friendly and helpful staff. The marina is a new after the hurricane damage several years ago as you know and everything is modern and convenient. We are docked in slip 29 which is right around the corner from the entrance to the bay.
We are very pleased with this marina.
