I've had 2 Pate tanks on my 2004 170 Montauk. My second 24 gallon "ethanol proof" tank seems to be deteriorating on the exterior side of the tank.

My Boston Whaler dealer now installs Moeller plastic tanks on 170 Montauks.

Is there a company that makes a high quality aluminum tank for the 170 Montauk?

I don't think there is. You need to find a custom tank builder. There are a bunch out there.

Thanks Tom. I just emailed MIRAX for a price quote for their 24 gallon aluminum upright tank, B-2424.

Warren, I'd love to hear what kind of price they come back with.

I seldom need that much fuel at one sitting, but I did use five - 6 gallon quicksilver tanks for the Manhattan run a month ago. I had the usual two tanks under the RPS and put three more back in the stern. I was able to lash the stern tanks back using the port side cleat and the starboard bow rail. I was thinking it would be nice to build a little platform to go over them when in use.

I don't think this is a viable solution for everyone, but one really great aspect was that my buddy could take one can out of the boat at 23rd St. (NYC), walk up to the gas station and bring me back six gallons of fuel. A nice security blanket for my solo 30 mile run home.

Thanks, Dennis

Warren, check out repair section, there was a posting about the 24 gallon tank from KSH/Mirax and a reply was from someone who has a 31 gallon under his seat and has a e-mail to show pics...Jack

PS if you only need 24 gallons then only put 24 in , but if more is needed it might be sweet!

Bulldog:

Thanks for the heads up. I would love to have a 31 gallon main tank!

I had a 24 gallon aluminum tank made for the 170 Montauk that I purchased in may. Mirax made it for me. It was powdercoated whaler white and matches real nice. I wanted at first a manual sight guage on it, but changed to an electric guage in the dash. The powdercoateg added to the price, as the other options were to paint it w/enamel, or just have the raw aluminum. Iadded an extra fuel cap to the order incase I ever lost the original. I have had all kinds of positive comments from other whaler owners, and the dealer that I bought the boat from. There is a little over 2 week turnaround when you order one from Miraz. I live in Alabama, and they are in Arizona, so that wasn't bad. If you want powdercoating, that could delay shipping depending on what color you might want. Call Mirax, and ask for Brian, he's very familiar with what Whaler owner's want. By the way, this tank was not cheap. The tank I ordered was a little over $600.00. Shipping was about $50.00, and the powdercoating option was around $180.00 I believe. Without the powdercoating, it was about the same price as a Pate tank used to be I think ( about $400.00). I had them roll the back edge of the tank so when you sit in the RPS backwards, you don't have a sharp edge hitting you on the back of the legs. They can make the tank to any spec you might have. A little pricey, but it's nice to have and I don't have to worry about fiberglass, or carrying a bunch of little tanks around. Ihave a couple of pics. I don't know how to post them, so if anybody wants them, i'll be glad to send them and maybe they can post them for all to see.

Sent pics to Tom Warren and cascobayoutrage. Please excuse the other pics of trolling motor, etc. I didn't know how to seperate them. I was thinking there were more of the tank, but i thinki there were only two. Hopefully Tom or Casco can post them. Thanks, Jim.

Does the tank need or should be grounded?

Not that I am aware of. The tank is mounted on a couple of rubber strips to help against vibration. Bottom of tank has a metal flange about 3/4" wide on each end with screw holes for mounting.

Do you have the dimensions of the tank? Was there a specific model or did you supply the measurements? I have a Pate C27 tank on my 2003 Montauk; unfortunately, the stations here have just started to switch to Ethanol fuel.

PS: Just found this forum - it great!

The model # of the tank is a 24-24 I believe. I gave Brian at Mirax the opening size under the RPS according to Chuck Bennett of Boston Whaler. I called him to get them opening size as I could not find it in any of the specs. The size had changed for the 2008 models. The dimensions of the tank given to me by Mirax, and the opening size as stated by the Whaler folks, it sounded as if the std. 24-24 model tank was going to fit fine. The fit ended up being perfect in my opinion. I do have all the dimensions, and model #'s of the tank at home, but am currently at work. I encourage all that are interested in such an appliciation to give Brian at Mirax a call, he can answer any questions you might have.

Jim-
What year is your boat? Do you have anymore photos of the tank?
jim40 posted 07-16-2008 02:26 PM ET (US)     Profile for jim40  Send Email to jim40
My Montauk 170 is a 2008 model. Unfortunately, that was the only 2 pics I had on the tank. If I can borrow a camera, i'll surely get more.

Jim
Did you get a chance to take anymore photos of the tank?

Thanks

Feejer, I have not had the chance yet. I do not have a digital camera, and nobody that has been around the boat has had one either. I'm sure I'll get some pics someday, just not sure when. They will get posted when I do for sure.
