I want to put my new Whaler Ventura at my dock on a river (brackish water) but I can't get myself to bottom paint. Has anyone ever used a wax product that can be applied instead of bottom paint? Anyone have any suggestions? And, does anyone out there fish AND try to keep their Whaler in pristine condition? I also have anxieties about fishing and "messing up" the boat! Thanks for your input!!

Carole, you will want to bottom paint any boat kept in New Jersey saltwater, trust me! Secondly, yes, you can fish and keep a clean boat. The Ventura has both a saltwater and a freshwater washdown system, which will keep you very clean during a day of fishing. Just yesterday we drew first blood of the season on some weakfish, which we carefully washed down 'out there'. We also catch both bonito and false albacore tunas during the season which as you know can present some challenging cleanups. The final wash with boat zoap and dab 'o sofscrub left her looking brand new by the time I left yesterday. When people come down on cruising days--like today--they would hardly know I fish her so hard. |

Nice to see your keeping the boat. Since you have your own dock you and don't want to bottom paint I would look into having a lift installed. It will not only keep the hull out of the water boat the engine also. |

If you keep a small bucket and car wash sponge handy and wipe up after each bleeding or bait up, the boat is much easier to wash down at the end of the day. Boat shampoo or wash wax helps too. |

Carole,"...try to keep their Whaler in pristine condition? I also have anxieties about fishing and "messing up" the boat!" Here's my 2 cents. I am assuming that you bought the boat to relax and enjoy yourself. The last thing that you should have is "anxieties" about messing it up and being preoccupied with keeping your boat in "pristine condition". Although your Whaler is a beautiful work of art, it is a boat and it is made to be used and run hard. It was not made to hang on the wall in a museum in France. Use it and enjoy it and don’t worry about messing it up. I know a couple (friends of my wife and I) that bought a new boat about 3 years ago. It was not a Whaler, but another model that was much less expensive. However the amount of money that they spent on this 18 foot bow rider with a 150 Mercury was a lot of money to them. They frequently bring their boat to my dock. The wife always has "MAJOR anxieties" about getting their boat dirty or getting a scratch on the boat, etc. etc. It is so extreme that it makes them no fun to be around when they were on their boat. Don’t fall into that trap or you wont enjoy boating as much as you should. There are tons of cleaning products out there that will clean up just about any mess that you can make. By all means, take care of your boat and don’t abuse it, but remember to have fun when you boat. That’s what it’s all about. |

there is a bottom paint that will match your whaler and is easy to apply,,at one time for about 5 years i would wax the bottom 3x a year and now it gets done once and of course its getting used less now that I'm away from the ocean,,keeping up with the daily mess of fishing is the easiest way to keep your boat up to visitors and a trip to the car wash after every trip will help a lot |

I have to agree with BRIAN7SON. I used to be like that and I still wince when I invite someone on the boat and they drop a sinker on the deck. The boat is there to be used and to have fun. If you worry about it too much , it will get in the way of your fun and that of your guests. Use it keep it waxed and clean and have fun.Paul |

about the bottom paint. Why not get in the habit of taking out of the water regularly. I take my 210 Ventura out all the time and find I don't need bottom paint. I also find the boat far easier to clean once it is up on the trailer. It's a real chore to do a good job at the dock. |

Check into the possibility of hull blisters if you keep your boat in the water full time without bottom paint. A search of this website should yield information on the subject. |
