The tube that forms the stern drain in our 2003 170 Montauk spins freely when trying to install and tighten the drain plug. Needless to say we have a leak that cycles the bilge pump on a regular basis. I researched the drain tube assembly on the factory parts diagram and it shows the PVC drain tube and a PVC lock nut. I'm not having any luck tightening the two pieces, thus stopping the leak and allowing the drain plug to be correctly installed. Has anyone expierenced this situation and if so what's the best way to solve this problem. Thanks. Jerry

I believe that drain tube uses the push-on type flange. They are typically sealed with waterproof caulking and then assembled onto the boat. I used one of these as a replacement to the drain tube in the cuddy of my Outrage. I think it would not be possible to get an effective seal without removing the tube, re-caulking, then installing a new one. I made a tool that allowed me to use a mallet to drive the follower ring onto the tube, and it took a great deal of effort. The first think I'd do is check to see if it's covered under the hull warranty. |

As far as I know these are not threaded parts. The nut merely pushes onto the pipe. The serations are for increased friction, they are not threaded. This could be a [manufacturing defect that will be covered under the ten-year hull] warranty. |

A hull defect which allows sea water to leak into the hull ought to be covered under the warranty. |

The tubes are everything said above as I replaced all except one in my 18 whaler-took out the brass and put in whaler plastic. It helps to have a helper-put them in with 42oo fast set.I have a few spare and they go together once and thats all. Its a warranty issue if its less than 10 years old -take to dealer as water is getting into hull every time you get the boat into water, Fix this soon or you wish you had, Mark |

Thank all of you for the help thus far. I have done a temporary repair by supporting the bottom portion of the drain tube, using a small jack and wooden blocks, and carefully driving the retainer ring down from the inside. Living in the mountains of North East Georgia makes a dealer visit for repair somewhat of a challenge. I feel certain I can perform the needed replacment if I have a new drain tube assembly. Where can new drain tubes be pruchased and what is the correct proceedure to remove the exixting drain tube? Thanks again. Jerry |

I have an older whaler than yours and its out of warranty. I replaced all mine a year or so ago with 1" PVC schedule 40 tubing. A search on here should find my "how-to" and some photos.Bill |

I bought mine via mail order from Twin Cities Marine. Sue shipped it out to me and I had it in just a few days. Search the archives here or do a Google search to get the phone number. As others have said, use plenty of 3M 4200 fast cure to seal things up right. |
