I like running close to the cliffs/rocks here in Newfoundland. The ocean usually drops straight down from the rocks. When you want to drop someone off the bow onto a rock ledge you stand a pretty good chance in scratching the bow as I did this weekend. Do any of you have any ideas/photos of anything innovative you have used on your bow to protect it. I see fishermen here use a half tire strapped to the bow....effective bit a little too homemade for my whaler. Pat

Would something like this work or does it have to cover the whole bow?

Paddy -

A keel guard may help you but are you concerned with the top of the lip of the bow? I.E. from the bow eye up to the rubrail?

I have the same issue as you. Practice and seaweed has kept me from major damage.

If you are discussing the bow?
Might try a piece of carpet or other sheet material.
Old blanket?
Some solutions do not have to be the ultimate, just work.

I have installed a keel guard and that works for the bottom of the boat. It is the top of the bow, above the eye I'm concerned about. Maybe a blanket is the answer, just something I can put in the forward locker and pull out when I am trying to come in close to the rocks. It is a great deal of fun poking your nose into a sea cave!! Thanks guys.......If anyone else has comments it would be greatly appreciated...Pat

Mud flap might work....I wonder if they make a suitable dock fender that would work?

Paddy -

When I had my Montauk, I used to tow/position large (12x24) floats for a pier.
I used those cheap life jackets hooked over the the vertical rail as a bumper.

Do you have a center rail on the Ventura?

My last suggestion is an outdoor mat, like you wipe your feet on. Rubber on the outside (facing out) and fabric (on the gelcoat) on the top.
