I have a 2003 170 Montauk and I am always having to wash and scrub the flooring under the RPS. I think what is happening is when I wash the open area of the boat, the water and dirt get washed under the base of the RPS and get trapped in there. Has anyone taken the time to remove the RPS and caulk the bottom edge to seal it to the floor? I'm thinking that it would then divert the water and dirt around to the sides.

I also have noticed that under the RPS on my Montauk seems to get more than its share of dirt and dibris. I have no solution other than pull the tanks out and clean the area out now and then. If you find a solution let us know. |

I bought white Dri Dek and cut to fit the area under the RPS. Looks nice and allows water and silt type dirt to flow under my two tanks to the stern of the boat. Hope this helps. |

My 2006 170 also seems to get quite dirty under the fuel tank. I replaced the 2, 6 gal tanks with a 27 so I won't be cleaning under it very often. I felt most of the dirt came from road travel. The dirt gets sucked in from behind and especially on the back of everything, i.e. RPS. It's like a dirty back window on the SUV. I suppose every couple years I'll feel obligated to remove and clean under, but "out od sight, out of Mind"... Hal of MN |

This past weekend I took a friend down to pick up his new 190 Montauk. While he was doing his thing with the salesman, I wondered around the yard to look at all the new Whalers. Low and behond, there was a new 2009 170 Montauk. Inside the RPS is a rim around the front and sides so water/dirt cannot get washed under the RPS PLUS it is caulked around the outside PLUS the floor under the RPS is smooth. No non-skid surface.I guess our solution is to buy a new 2009. I'm going to try the caulk under the edge trick. As long as I take my time, I figure it can't hurt. |

If you caulk and water does get in, it may not get out. I vote for dri-deck. Even though the bottom of the RPS is caulked on my Dauntless, it still had water finding its way in. Dri-deck keeps everything off the floor. Maybe do both? |
