I'm thinking about buying a brand new Boston Whaler Ventura 180 and have the choice between a 115hp 4 stroke Yamaha or a 150hp 4 stroke Yamaha.

Most of the time I'm navigating close to shore here in the Bahamas with one other passenger. Occasionally we do about a 30 mile run to the other end of the island in not more than a 2-3ft chop and I've never gone more than 18 knots in our current boat (a RIB)to minimize the rough ride.

My concern is really more with planing and to be able to go at least 18 knots without straining the engine.

I drove a 10 year old 20 foot ventura which had at least a 150hp 2 stroke mercury on it, with three people and it seemed to take a lot of power just to get the boat to plane.

Do you think the 115hp Yamaha would be sufficient?

The dealer says that the new Ventura hulls would solve the planing problem along with some tweaking of the prop size. Is this true?

The 115 will be sufficient with two people but when you add one more person and a full cooler you will start to have trouble planing and holding a plane at slower speeds.

Wow, you can get a Yamaha? How are you swinging that? Get the 150. I have a Verado on my Dauntless 180 which has a similar weight and the engine is perfect.

Out of country dealers choice of power. Go with the F150

I had the Dauntless 180 with a Ficht 150 and the Ventura 180 with the Yam 150 2-stroke. Both packages delivered ample power for planing and cruised well at 3500 rpms. These are heavely little hulls at 2300 lbs, I would defintely go with the 150.
