I have a 2007 Montauk 170 with a Mercury 90 hp EFI engine. Recently the engine has not always started first time i.e. when you turn the key from on to start all you get is a click. When you go back to on and then go to start again the engine turns over and starts. Once the engine has been running for awhile it usually starts right away. At first I thought this might be a battery issue (i.e. time for a new starting battery) however, last year I installed a two battery system and today the engine failed to start, initially on the starting battery and then again on “Both”. On the second attempt to start on”Both” the engine started. After the engine had been running for awhile, down the lake (35 minutes or so) there was no problem starting it.
Any suggestions on what the problem may be?

Thanks,

Ian

Have you checked your battery & starter connections?

While this isn't common, it has happened on multiple Mercury "Veradito's". Is this the engine you have? If so, here's a link to the thread where the end stage of this fault can lead:

Starter failures on the 90 HP "Veriditos" are fairly common (And 99% of the time they fail in the manner you described). I have had mine replaced and my Mechanic reports that he has replaced numerous others. There are also many reports on this forum (And others) of problems with these starters. Mercury knew that there was a problem and eventually updated the starters with a new model with a new part number. Another starter failure discussion is below.

Thank you Sixer, ktm310 and dbrown for the input. I checked both the battery and starter connections and both were tight. I took the boat and motor in to my Mercury mechanic today and he diagnosed the problem as the starter. A new starter will be ordered on Monday and will probably be installed later next week. Due to the remarkably good weather we have been having over the past week or so my wife and I are heading to the lake tomorrow to enjoy the hot (forecast is for 83 degrees F) weather while it lasts. We have had a miserable summer this year and the warm weather is welcome. Hopefully the starter will continue to start (although fitfully) for one more day.
