I had plan to use a 25-HP kicker on my Conquest to use for trolling and slow cruising, and having a reasonable standby motor which can push through current and sea. I have recently noticed there has been at of concern given to overloading transoms on various Boston Whaler boats. I'm now starting to wonder if a 225-HP and 25-HP Mercury engines are a bit much.

25 seems like a lot to me, why do you feel you need so much? A 10-15 high thrust should work well at hull displacement speeds and provide reasonable charging of batteries.

I would think a 25 would be better matched to a 25-28 foot boat.

I was planning to use the 25hp off my 12' tinnie. I thought I would get a 5hp for the tinnie which the kids to use and it would be also convenient to be able to lift the motor off when I leave the tinnie on the beach.

How much does the kicker weigh? Most kicker brackets rated to 15-HP or about 110-lbs.

I think the motor is around 120-lbs.
The kicker bracket is rated to 25hp.
When shopping for mine I saw some hydraulic lifting brackets rated for 30hp motors.

The 25 Hp Merc I have is a early 1990's model and I have looked after it. And it's also easy to start. Apart from the waterpump padlewheel giving out every few years, I find it has been a good motor and worth hanging onto.
