Just read from Facebook that there is a 170 Dauntless and found this on google search:

I almost hate to think about the price. Looks nice though.

I am confused. A 170 and a 180? The 180 has a full bench in the stern while the 170 Dauntless has two quarter seats. Wish they would ditch the reverse shear.

When is this available? I don't see it on the official Boston Whaler website.

I can't imagine them continuing with both a 170 and 180 model. I'd prefer the 180 model if in the market. Better to scoop up a year old model at the winter boat shows at a discount than pay a premium for the newer model.

Looks like Boston Whaler used the 170 Sport hull and re-fitted a center console along with a different stern configuration. Maybe they just added a totally different cap on the 170 hull. Also, this hull (170 SP/DA) seems to have more deadrise than the 170 Montauk, based on the view from the video. I think pricing will be a few thousand higher than the 170 Sport, mid to upper 20's, just a guess on my part. Nice looking runabout in my opinion.

I prefer the full bench seating in the stern as well. The 170 looks quite compact, hopefully it will not be too heavy.

Look for the boat at Miami. Production to start after that. The hull will be from the 170 Super Sport with a new top deck to allow for a built in fuel tank. This will be a full featured boat compared to the 170 Montauk. It will help bridge the price gap between the 180 Dauntless and the 170 Montauk.

I can't help but think that these sound all all the reasons that they discontinued the excellent 160 Dauntless.

Under Weight, Max. Weight Capacity and Swamped Capacity it says: TBD.

I have been looking for some info on this and it is now available through the mobile whaler site - m.bostonwhaler.com. For some reason it is not on the regular site yet. It lists specs, options, and has a lot of photos. Looks like 35 gallon tank, console seat livewell as an option, after seats, etc. Found a site that has one listed for about $42K...seems high to me but looks nice.

Specs are on the BW web site now.
http://www.bostonwhaler.com/Page.aspx/pageId/29591/pmid/292521/ 170-Dauntless.aspx

LOA: 17' 0" (5.18 m)
Beam: 6' 10" (1.85 m)
Draft: 11" (3.35 m)
Weight (dry, no engine): 1,680 lbs (762 kg)
Maximum Weight Capacity: 1,500 lbs (680 kg)
Swamped Capacity: 2, 700 lbs (1224 kg)
Persons Capacity: 7
Maximum Horsepower: 100 HP (74.56 kW)
Minimum Horsepower: 90 HP (67.11 kW)
Deadrise at Transom: 14°
Fuel Capacity: 35 gal (113.56 L)
Maximum Engine Weight: 410 lbs (185.97 kg)
Transom Height: 20" (0.58 m)
Bridge Clearance with Sun-top: 6' 5" (1.96 m)
Bridge Clearance without Sun-top: 4' 7" (1.4 m)

Comparing this to a 2002 Dauntless 160 brochure.
LOA: 16' 3" (4.95 m)
Beam: 7' 1" (2.15 m)
Draft: 11" (.27 m)
Weight (dry, no engine): 1500 lbs (680 kg)
Bridge Clearance: 4' 9" (1.44 m)
Swamped Cap: 4200 lbs (1905 kg)
Persons Cap: 6

If the 2002 brochure is accurate, the new Dauntless 170 is longer, narrower, heavier, and accomodates 1 more person. The max HP is lower (surprising) and the fuel tank is smaller (my Dauntless has 45 gallons).

Looks nice. I like the fold down rear seats, people step on my seats all the time when entering/leaving, particularly from the ladder. I like the swim platform. Comparing the deckplans, the the front deck looks much larger since it is more square and has a narrower raised border (where the rail attaches). The console windshield sure looks small. The rear railings are attached to the top of the bulkhead rather than on a step, this probably allows a few more inches of usable interior width.

Wow! That sticker will separate the serious from the interested. I am surprised by the price, I thought it would be in the upper twenties. I think that is a tough sell at 38K. Just my opinion.

The best part about the new boat is the console design, more of the "montauk" layout providing enough room to flush mount some of the largest electronics displays. The rest of the Dauntless line have the gauges mounted in the middle, making flush mounting any large screens impossible. I hope they modify the larger sister boats to this new console lay out.

I wonder why they rated it for 100 horsepower? It's 280 pounds heavier than the 170 Montauk so I'd think they'd just slap on the 115 hp Mercury since this would be a deluxe runabout boat.

That gawd-awful un-Whalerish tu-tone paint scheme won't wear well, literally or figuratively. In ten years there will be all kinds of topics at this website seeking advice on removing and/or painting over the ugly stuff. Otherwise a decent-looking post-classic BW, but not near as nice IMO as the MT 170s and 190s.

My question: can one order the boat without the ugly paint job?

I can buy a new 2011 190 Montauk with 150 hp Verado with DTS for $38.2K.....

Not sure if the pricing of the 170 Dauntless is going to get a lot of interest.

Looks like a pretty well designed boat. It seems like this design might appeal to the crowd that wants a great family boat to fish and ski with, and be able to park it in their garage (or shorter driveway) with a swing away tongue trailer. And it's different enough from a Montauk, which we all know has the reputation of being a hard core fishing boat. I think it's a good addition to the lineup. In fact, I think all the new additions to the Whaler lineup are really good additions that fill some pretty strategic boating niches. The price, well that's a different story. Approaching $40K for a boat with less than 100 hp is getting a little unreasonable. Maybe if it came pre-rigged with a Stern Saver on it ;)

Note the price shown in the boat show includes several options. Given the ridiculous prices whaler charges for options, the $38k price is not a surprise.

Does anyone else find it odd that the max HP for this model is 100? Considering all new Whalers come with Mercury engines and they don't even make a 100HP outboard?
andygere posted 02-03-2012 06:48 PM ET (US)     Profile for andygere  Send Email to andygere
Max hp is effectively 90 based on available engines. Too bad. If it's anything like the 160 Dauntless (and it does look like a reworked version of that boat) it needs more than 90 hp with anything but a light load. Performance specs show it needs 3000 rpm to plane, and 5.5 seconds to get there with a moderate load. That time goes way up on the similar 160 when you add 2 more people. Why not make the 115 hp an option?

Compared to a 190 Montauk with a 150 Verado, this boat is a tough sell, even with it's clever seating and nice interior layout. I do like the stern aesthetic better than the 160 Dauntless, about time they got rid of that Euro transom. Narrower beam may improve performance some, but it will be a tight squeeze getting around the console. That extra room is a feature of the 160 that I like over my former classic Montauk.

The 75, 90 and 115 hp Mercury FourStrokes weight 399 pounds, which is quite heavy for repowering older boats.

Since Mercury just unveiled a new light weight 150 hp FourStroke which maybe targeted towards the repower market, perhaps Mercury is also tweaking its 75-115 hp outboard line-up with a 100 hp model?

Wishful thinking?

First, note the performance test was of the Dauntless was done with 450 pounds (20%) more weight. That included 24 more gallons of fuel and heavier crew than did the test of the Montauk. It was also on a 5ºF warmer day

The 115 HP is the same motor/displacement as the 90 HP with a higher rev limit (and whatever else gives it more top end). It wouldn't make a difference getting on plane.

Whaler addresses the heavier hull weight with one inch less pitch on the prop and 2º less deadrise, compared to the Montauk.

I love the console and the bi-fold bow cushion, but the alignment of the railing step-through and bimini frame could've been done better.

Pretty sharp lookin' boat IMO.

Add 10K and you can get slightly used 320 Outrage....
I know it's no comparison but it shows how high the price is.

I think that Outrage 320 on CL may be a scam. That seems way too good to be true for that price. But you are right, with all great deals on used Whalers these days, it would be silly to spend that kind of dough on a 17 with 90 horses. That boat should have a max hp rating of 150. My old 18 Outrage had a 200 hp rating and was only a foot longer.
