1983 13-footer Cockpit Sump Pump

Postby Kochisp » Wed Aug 17, 2016 8:54 am

I'd like to add cockpit sump pump to my 13-foot Boston Whaler boat. It seems many people have done this before, but haven't found too many suggestions for a complete setup that includes a pump and float that would fit in that tiny spot that measures about 3 x 5-inches in front of the lower drain plug. Anyone have specific suggestions on what pump and float to use? Pictures of installation would be appreciated too!

If space is limited for a cockpit sump pump, perhaps choosing one with an automatic sensing device instead of using an external float switch will give you more space and more options.

I don't have any idea how prevalent electrically-operated cockpit sump pumps are on classic 13-foot Boston Whaler boats. Electrical pumps were not a factory-option on the classic 13-foot boats. A lot of them had pull-start outboard engines and no battery, so there was no electrical power for an electric pump. Compare at

Water is quickly "run out" of the boat through open drain tubes once underway. Drain plugs can then be installed to keep the boat dry.

Boston Whaler 13-foot boats do not have any bilge space. They have a double-bottom hull and the interior is sealed and filled with foam. The cockpit has a small sump area to collect water, which can be drained to the sea if the plug is left out.

I used to have a Rule 360 in the sump on my 13' but I just manually switched it.

A Rule-a-matic would fit. They check for water every 2 minutes.

Mine's under restoration right now, I'll have to decide on a new pump soon.

I don't have a picture, since I just sold the boat , a 1968 13 sport. I used a small bilge pump and a float switch, mounted in the splash well. the pump was mounted in back of the first drain hole. The float was mounted behind that. The float was mounted on a wedge made from mahogany, so it would pick up with less water. I mounted a thru hull on the port side splash well , which was the discharge.
