After 30 years the original Montauk cooler is finally cracking and needs to be replaced. I have the console-mounted rod holders so I can't go too high. I searched for some information on coolers and Montauks but some threads are quite old.
Cooler manufacturers seem to be changing their models and new manufacturers are also jumping in,
I don't need [the cooler to be able] to hold ice for more than a day, so I don't need a Yeti or other high end cooler,
I prefer a cooler that has more space but that you can still sit on without cracking. Looking on the Igloo website it seems like the coolers with dimensions close to the original one include:
--Igloo marine 72-quart: 30 x 16 x 16
--Igloo STX-72-quart: 29.75 x 16.5 X 16.6
Both shapes seem close to original.
[Give me a recommendation for a cooler that is] a direct fit that you are using on a Montauk of [c.1987] vintage and sells for under $200
Thank you--Mark

Re: Direct fit cooler replacement for a 1987 Montauk
If you can fit an RTIC 65 quart cooler, they're aYeti copy for $199 delivered. Will last forever and hinges don't break. I have a 20, 45, and a 145.
Re: Direct fit cooler replacement for a 1987 Montauk
Mark--the original cooler was a 86-quart Igloo Marine series. Igloo modified this design by changing the lid and increasing the size to 94-quart. The width and length are the same as the 86-quart.
Owners of classic Montauk's, including me, who have the rod holders and cushions are told when replacing their cooler to buy the 94-quart Marine Elite cooler (which has better hinges).
Install the existing cooler cushion (or buy OEM replacement from Anderson's http://www.amfg.us) and install the cooler so that the hinges face forward. With this orientation, the cooler fits in the chocks and the lid will open and the rod back cushions do not interfere.
I did this on my 1987 Montauk without any problems. Here is a photo

Re: Direct fit cooler replacement for a 1987 Montauk
I have replaced the original plastic hinges on several IGLOO coolers with upgraded steel hinges.

Where do you get those metal hinges Jim?

Re: Direct fit cooler replacement for a 1987 Montauk
I see an Igloo 94 marine ultra but no igloo marine elite on igloo's website. Are they the "same" cooler? Seems like West marine mentions the elite.
Re: Direct fit cooler replacement for a 1987 Montauk
Sorry - it is not Elite, rather Marine Ultra.
It appears the only difference between the Marine and the Ultra is the handles, hinges and closing mechanism. Given the price difference, it may be cheaper to order the Marine series and replace the hinges and latch with the Ultra replacement parts.

Re: Direct fit cooler replacement for a 1987 Montauk
I use a 72-quart Marine Igloo (which I picked up used), and I bought a cushion from Andersons. That works fine for me. [There is] just enough space for my two kids to sit up front on either side of the crook.
