Q1: how can a lock be cleanly retrofitted to the center console of a 2006 170 MONTAUK?

I think Southco Company supplied many of the later model Boston Whalers like yours with console hardware.

Search "SouthCo marine latches" - I believe they make a key locking version of the Whaler OEM Console slam latch.
