I have owned 14 Whalers and 10 had brass norman pins, my 89 Montauk had a chrome plated one and both my Newports and my 19 revenge did not have one. Recently I read that someone had a chrome one on a 1970 Nauset(was it replaced?). Anyone know what years and models the norman pins were chrome, I was thinking 198? or so and newer but I guess not.

Is it size? ALl my 13 & 15's had brass. I also think the 76 Montauk was brass but can't remember. I do remember buying my 89 and thinking "when did they go to chrome?" |

I think that all norman pins are chrome-plated brass. The ones that do not appear chrome have probably had the plating worn off over time. |

'76 Montauk (built '75) bronze Norman pinThe Whaler catalog CD clearly shows a number of un-plated bronze (Brass would quickly bend into a pretzel) pins on various hulls over the years. |

Big One, Seems to vay from year to year and certainly model to model. The earlier Whalers had the bronze ones then some times in the Rebok era they started to show up chrome. I have owned 15's and 17's with both types. My SS LTD is chrome but the sport is bronze. The LES was a commerical hull and it was bronze. But, the newer commerical hull that I see at the DNR is chrome. Go figger!~ By the way IMHO the bronze is more durable. Jim Armstrong |

Chrome did NOT wear off being I have removed them and the inside is still bronze. Plus My 1982 13' was bought new and was bronze. My Danbury mint nausett model has a chrome one though. Certain models have chrome and then BW went to chrome in say 1988 or something? Where the heck is Tom Clark when ya need him:) |

1985 Montauk- Bronze norman pin.But I have a related question. I was cleaning the boat after a fishing trip yesterday and I noticed a spot, about the size of a dime, where the plating is coming off the chrome/bronze plate that the bowlight is mounted on. Is there anything I can do to repair this or at least keep it from getting bigger, or should I just take it off and get it re-chromed? |

My '85 Montauk and '86 Outrage 18' both had/have bronze norman pins. Never removed either (why would you?), but neither appears to have ever been chromed. |

19?? Squall - bronze. 1969 13' Standard - bronze. 1979 15' Sport - bronze. While some/many Norman Pins came chromed - I just have never come across one. It would be interesting to know the percentage bronze vs. chrome plated. Regarding the chrome plating wearing/corroding - that's happened to the chomed bronze hardware (side rail bases, lift rings, etc.) on my 15'. They will be rechromed this winter when the fresh mahogany goes into the interior. |

Well now this is interesting. I would have said that all the norman pins were bronze (NOT brass) until the mid 1980's when they first started to appear as standard equipment on all small Whalers. But reading through this thread I see a number of owners of the 16'-7" models reporting chromed pins on their 1967 to 1971 boats. Perhaps Whaler tried this on their (at that time) Flagship models and then, for whatever reason, went back to the plain bronze pins. I do know that starting in the mid 1980's all the pins were chromed which has always struck me as somewhat sacrilegious, but that's only because I grew up in the 1970's and all the Whalers at that time had bronze pins so that how I formed my impression of what a Whaler should be like. I also think it is entirely possible that the chrome pins reported on the older models are replacements from a later date or maybe even a former owner simply decided the pin would look better if it was chromed and just dropped it off at the local chrome shop. Either way I think it would be difficult to prove a chrome pin were original unless it belonged to the original owner. On the other hand, I think there are too many reports of chromed pins here from 1967 to 1971 to dismiss them as none original. White Bear, How in the heck could a norman pin on a 1988 Outrage 20 be chromed?! An Outrage 20 doesn't have the norman pin we are talking about here, it has a sampson post (Bow Bitt) that has an integral norman pin in it and it is made of Marinium (an proprietary aluminum alloy). |

'82 Montauk - bronze Norman pinOne of my esteemed siblings wrapped the chain around this particular Norman pin when lowering the Montauk from our boathouse crane rail via chain falls (current water level is 5' lower than it was when I built the boathouse), and tore the Norman pin clean out of its fiberglass mount. One of my projects this winter is to try and re-set it in something hopefully close to its original structural and aesthetic condition. |

Nick,I was looking at the old catalogs last night and while it is hard to tell (Whaler almost makes a piont of not giving a clear view of the normn pin) it looks as though many of the norman pins on the early Whalers were chrome. Check it out and let me know what you think. I would be curious to find out when in the mid 1980's the change came to chrome. John, Is your Montauk a 1982 or a 1984 as you told me in an email this morning? If the latter we would have an idea that at least as late as 1984 they were still bronze. I'd also be curious to know when the change to the hex sided norman pins occured. (If you buy a replacement norman pin now from a whaler dealer, it will have a hex shape at the base for use with a wrench, whereas the originals were purely round in cross section.) |

It's a mystery, wrapped in a paradox, disquised as a riddle, this whole norman pin matter. Unravel it, and you might discover the secrets o' the UNIverse, things like:How do a termometer know what temp'ature it is? Ah mean, really. Or take a Termous bottle. It keep hot stuff hot and cold stuff cold, but HOW DO IT KNOW? Mebbe even discover, does Dolly Parton wear a truss when she's off camera? It's all more than Ah can hold, that one, way too much f' me. Mebbe we should just leave the secret o' the norman pin be, don't mess with it anymore, ya hear? |

Joe & Luis,Let's not confuse the issue here. We're talking about the norman pins in the small Whalers i.e. the 9, 11, 13, 15 and 16/17 footers. This pin is totally different than the pin found in the bow bitt on the larger boats which is not chrome at all but rather Marinium, a proprietary aluminum alloy. Actually I suspect the pin itself is not Marinium but rather a piece of stainless steel press fit into the cast Marinium bow bitt, but at any rate NOT chromed. frostbite, Probably not silicone bronze, which is used for screws but some other alloy, perhaps manganese bronze (which isn't really that far from brass). Marine hardware legend and giant, Perko makes a lot of hardware from what they call bronze and some from manganese bronze but none that I can see from silicone bronze. |
