| Author | Topic: Cooler Size - 72 or 96 Igloo |

I own a 1988 Outrage 20 and plan to add a cooler to the front of the Center Console. The center console is 32" wide but, including the T-Top tubes it is 36" wide. The 72 quart igloo is 29.75" wide and the 96 quart is 34.75 wide. Given that the mounting hardware adds some width I would imagin the 72 quart was the original spec cooler for this boat, but I believe I can fit the 96 quart in. Can anyone comment on what was the original equipment or give advice on selection between these two sizes ? thanks. |

While I see a 96 qt on Igloo's site, I recall the 94 qt being a standard size. I note you can get the OEM new cushion from Halls in that size. I found the 94 quart Igloo listed here: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4994242 I would go with the 94 since I know you can get the matching cushion. |

This is a frequently asked question. The answer is both the Igloo 72 quart and the 94 quart coolers can be used. Both are "standard" coolers and both are readily available. Both have cushions made for them by Lois Hall. The 94 quart os the closer of the two to the original Igloo 86 quart cooler that Whaler used in the 1970s and 1980s. The 94 quart is essentially an 86 quart with a taller "domed" lid. It is boat owners choice. I prefer the 94 quart for the greater storage capacity and more comfortable seating it affords. |

I've often thought that a larger cooler, mounted on Montauk style cooler cleats would be a good solution. The Montauk cleats mount under the cooler, as opposed to the Outrage sytle cleats that mount outside the ends of the cooler, making effectively that much wider. Has anyone done this? Either way, a 72 qt. Igloo is pretty small, both as a fish box and as a seat, so I'd opt for the 94. |

Andy, I had the Montauk style cleats n my Outrage 18 and it is a much better arrangement. There is a greatly reduced tripping or "toe stubbing" hazard and the cooler is elevated off the deck which makes it easier to wash down the deck as water just passes under the cooler instead of having to make its way around it. |

My 94 Qt cooler is still sitting in my attic in case you or anyone else might be interested. http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/015598.html |

Does the boat have backrests on the console? My 86 Montauk has a 94qt, but it makes opening tough since the lid hits the OEM backrests/rod holders. I ended up turning it around so it flips forward. Still not convenient, but it is more functional. |

the CC does not have a backrest and the T-Top does not attache to the front of the CC it attaches to the top of the Center Console |

In 1992 when I purchased my 1982 Montauk 17 it had a factory bench seat in front of the console. I really wanted a cooler seat instead. I took off the old Bench seat, went to a local Whaler Dealer climbed aboard a Montauk & measued the Cooler Cleats, so I could build a pair. I also wanted a larger than standard 86 Qt Cooler, I wanted a 94 Qt. My thinking at that time was that the larger cooler would end up with the forward corners rubbing the fore deck where it slopes up to the gunwhales. So I decided to build the Cleats thicker, that would raise the larger cooler higher up to prevent rubbing on the deck. At that time I didn't know the 86 Qt & 94 Qt coolers had the same footprint. Anyway the thicker Cooler Cleats turned out very nice and served me well, the cooler made for a nice seat & great storage space. On days trips I'd put a small soft sided cooler with Ice & drinks, snacks, and the rest was used for life jackets, lines, etc, etc.. here are a couple of photographs by the way, Hall's Nautical Upholstery is the best, I've bought several pieces from her, a Montauk bow cushion, 2 cooler cushions, and a set of pedestal seat cushions, all top notch..... My Outrage 22 was purchased with an Igloo cooler mounted in front of the console. The cooler has a moniker of "Sport 90" on one of the lower corners. I guess it is a 90 quart? The cooler deck brackets are molded plastic, I believe made by Igloo. I don't particularly care for the brackets, but they do a good job of securing the ice chest. The problem I am experiencing is that the cooler has started to disintegrate (the plastic exterior is delaminating from the foam insulation). I want to replace the cooler, but cannot find an Igloo cooler that fits the deck bracket layout. I would find a cooler that is of the same dimensions of my cooler rather than relocate the brackets to fit a new cooler. I have viewed the Igloo website and cannot see any current coolers that even come close to the footprint dimensions of my "Sport 90" cooler. As far as the dimensions go- exactly where are the dimensions taken? There are no defined corners to hook a tape measure to. I guess I could fiberglass a skin over the foam insulation, but would rather not. Any ideas, beyond relocating the brackets to fit a new, current ice chest? My apologies to Jimh and Smithsm if I have semi-hijacked the thread. Thanks, |

mgeiger, I plan to add backrests - but not fishing rod holders as I have rocket launchers on the T-Top why don't you move your mounting hardware forward by an inch or two to allow you to better open the lid ? |

Doug, The solution to your dilemma is simple: Ditch the decrepit cooler you have and replace it with an Igloo 94. Make yourself a nice set of cooler cleats and get rid of the non-Whaler chocks you have now. |

Tom, Your are correct sir! I may have a line on one near me. Doug |
