I am replacing a Pate fuel tank on my 1998 Montauk. It did not have a pad under the tank. It was installed by the dealer when I bought the boat in 1998. I am replacing the tank with a Moeller poly tank. Is it required by law to have a pad under the tank, or is it just good sense to have a pad?
The bottom of the Pate fiberglass tank was not worn, and the deck area did not show any wear. If I need a pad, can you make a suggestion.

We've used both the red Moeller tanks (20 and 26 gallon) & the new white, made for Boston Whaler, 24 gallon tank.
Never used or needed a mat.
Just used the factory Moeller hold-down kits - # 035711-10 strap type or the # 035710 bracket type.

I also had the red Moeller tank on my Montauk and did not use a mat under the gas tank. I did use the tie-down kit, actually fabricated my own version. No need for a mat in my opinion.

I used those plastic 12" deck squares that you can snap together and trimmed to fit. It allows the water and dirt to run out from under the tanks. West Marine sells them.

Thanks for the replies. I put the white tank in and used the Moeller aluminum tie downs along with the Pate fiberglass locating strips. I drilled new holes in the aluminum tie downs to match up with existing screws in the locating strips, so no new holes had to be drilled.

I strongly recommend the use of the Dri-Deck squares under the tank, as mentioned above. They can be cut to the exact size. I also use them under batteries and oil tanks.
