I have a leak both at the helm and the rear hydraulic cylinder, so I thought I'd start by replacing the seals -- when I went to identify the helm pump and cylinder, I couldn't find ANY identifying tags or numbers. Am I missing something? (on the Teleflex web site, for example the pumps are "1.7" or "2.4")I know it is a Sea Star I system, but there seem to be a number of different models, and they have changed by year. The boat is an 87, with twin 150 Johnsons, with the cylinder mounted in front of the starboard engine, connected with a long rod to the port engine. Teleflex is silent, so far -- has anyone replaced the seals on these components, and can remember which kit they used? Thanks, Mar

Assuming that your Seastar helm is original with the boat (87), the rebuild kit (seals) is probably part number HS5151 (pre 1990 helms). If your helm is leaking at the steering shaft, it is probably the steering shaft seal and is easily replaceable without removing the helm for a rebuild. Remove the steering wheel from the shaft and you will see the three flush bolts in the seal retainer on the helm surrounding the shaft. Remove that and you will expose the seal. There is one included in the kit above. Regarding the cylinder. If it is a front mount, the part number for the seal kit most likely is HS5157. If a side mount, HS5153. Verify the numbers with teleflex when they contact you after you describe in more detail what the helm and most important, what the cylinder looks like. Good luck. |

Shaft seal part number for shaft seal on Teleflex helm, is 225320 (helms from 1984-1989), if that is your problem with your helm. |
