How is the model number of the steering systems on Boston Whaler boats determined? I have a 1997 OUTRAGE. I plan to add a Raymarine Wireless Autopilot System. I need to determine the SeaStar model.

The cylinder mounted on the outboard and the helm should have a model number/part number on them somewhere.

In 1997 I believe the dealer, not the factory rigged the boats, so I don't think you will find a standard helm unit or engine cylinder specification. They installed all brands of motors, and the cylinder kits can vary depending on make and horsepower.

I installed a kicker motor this season on my 1997 21 Outrage. It has a Seastar hydraulic steering system. The boat came with its original Mercury engine.

Teleflex makes a kicker tie bar kit that will fit on the engine cylinder for the Mercury outboard. I assumed my cylinder was the Mercury part number and ordered the tie bar kit. It turns out the cylinder on the engine is actually the cylinder that is now used on the OMC/BRP motors. The tie bar kit did not fit, so I just changed the engine cylinder. It wasn't in great shape anyway.

Long story short, you should check your boat for what unit it actually has to avoid a costly mistake.

The Sea Star Hydraulic Steering on your boat has several components: Helm Pump, Hydraulic Cyliner and Hydraulic lines. The Helm Pump and Hydraulic Cylinder both should have their model number right on them. The helm pump is under your steering wheel. The Hydraulic Cylinder is attached to the motors and is the thing that actually turns the motor.

It is not possible to tell you what you have without looking at it. However, the most common (least expensive) Helm Pump seen on most boats is a 5271 and the Hydraulic Cylinder is probably either a HC5343 or HC5345. But, you should not rely on this information. I provided this information simply so you can see if it matches what your looking at. It is possible that you could have something entirely different. A lot of the stuff is interchangeable and some dealers just put on what they have in stock. Good Luck.
