![]() ![]() ![]() Weight of Older Outboard Engines What is the weight of a 1976 Johson 85-HP engine? I am thinking of re-powering with a Yahama 90-HP four-stroke and I was told the weight of the Yamaha and the wieght of a 1976 Johnson 85-P are close. Thanks. shipwreck8 |

![]() ![]() ![]() Weight of Older Outboard Engines The following are typical OMC motors and weights found on classic Whalers. Weights taken from the 1992 Evinrude catalog. 2 cylinder, 521 cc platform, 20/25/30/35 HP This bullet proof motor platform had a run from 1976 to ~2005. Often found on classic 13, 15 & sometimes as twins on 17 Montauks 2 cylinder 737 cc platform, 40/48/50/55/60 HP These motors populated the transoms of 13s, 15s and some 17 Montauks. 3 cylinder 849/920 cc platform, 50/60/70 HP 20 inch shaft, elec. start, man. tilt -- 237 lbs (This motor used to displace ~849 cc and was about 10 lbs lighter) Often found on 15s, 17 Montauks, sometimes as twins on 18/20 Outrages and 20 Revenges. V4 1632 cc platform, 85/88/90/100/115 HP 20 inch shaft, elec. start, man. tilt -- 288 lbs Often hanging on the transoms of 17 Montauks(85-100 HP), 17/18 Outrage (115 HP), 22 Outrage/Revenge as twins (90-115 HP). V4 2000 cc (loop charge) platform, 120/130/140 HP 20 inch shaft, elect. start, trim/tilt -- 365 lbs Seen on 17/18 Outrages & as twins on 22 Outrage/Revenge incl. WD, 22 Outrage/Revenge Whaler Drive ("WD"), 25 Outrage/Revenge incl. WD. V6 2448 cc (cross flow, 90 degree) platform, 150 HP 20 inch shaft, elec. start, trim/tilt -- 397 lbs V6 2589 cc (loop charge, 60 degree) platform, 150/175 HP 20 inch shaft, elec. start, trim/tilt -- 370 lbs Often seen hanging on the transom of 18 & 20 Outrages, sometime on 22 Outrage/Revenge (as single) & on 22 Outrage/Revenge WD and 25 Outrage/Revenge as twins. V6 3000 cc (loop charge) platform, 200/225 HP 25 inch shaft, elec. start, trim/tilt -- 455 lbs. (This platform started out with lesser displacement (~2700 cc) and slightly lighter weight) Commonly seen on 22/25 Outrage/Revenges as singles and sometimes as twins on 25 Outrage/Revenge/Temptation WDs. V8 4000 cc (loop charge) platform, 250/275/300 HP 25 inch shaft, elect. start, trim/tilt -- 555 lbs Sometimes found on 27 Whalers both notched and WD. (This platform also started out with lesser displacement (~3600 cc) and slightly lighter weight) I am missing the data for the mid 90s 60 degree V4 loop charged platform which was sometimes found on 17 Montauks and 17 Outrages.

![]() ![]() Weight of Older Outboard Engines According to the manual, 1987 Suzuki DT150, and DT200,both V-6, 20 in shaft 2 stroke weigh in at a heavy 456 lb. A 25" shaft motor is 465lbs. |

![]() ![]() Weight of Older Outboard Engines 1956 30 hp. Johnson or Evinrude according to my memory weighs 97lbs. When the 13 foot Whaler was designed, this was the most common motor that was used on that boat. A lot lighter than the motors used nowadays. |

![]() ![]() ![]() Weight of Older Outboard Engines I usually go to NADA online guides - They list boat and motor weights when you look up values. I am not sure how accurate it is but I would think it is close. I got the weights for the following 1987 models assuming power tilt and trim. Mercury 70ELPTO - 265 Pounds Hope this helps out. |
The Judge |
![]() ![]() ![]() Weight of Older Outboard Engines 288 for the merc with PTnT. I show 250 even for the OMC. To answer the question asking if NADA weights are incorrect: No the 265-lbs is correct for the 70 merc in NADA but that is w/o PTnT. With PTnT it is 288. All of my brochures claim the 70 OMC at 250 with PTnT and I think 237 w/o. |

![]() ![]() ![]() Weight of Older Outboard Engines I have searched high and low but can't find any specs on the weight of the 1986 Evinrude 150 HP V6 outboard. I want to compare that to the weight of the various modern alternatives for repowering... Thanks in advance for the magic answer! |

![]() ![]() ![]() The OMC crossflow V-4's (99.6 cid block) also came in: 110, 112 (SPL models. 1980's and 1990's) 100, 125, 135, 140 (1970's) The pre-1972 models were electric shift. 1973 and later were two cable hydraulic assist-"Power Shift II". All the V-4's (crossflow-1969 and later) were right about 300-310 pounds. |

![]() ![]() ![]() Everyone seems to be overlooking what would appear to be the lightest weight 30 hp motors. Tohatsu/ Nissan built these strong 2 cylinder motors up thru 2001. Their weights vary from 101 to 108 lbs. |

![]() ![]() I pulled this info on my 1993 90hp SUZUKI from NADA. I believe it is correct. DT90TCLP 2 stroke The Suzuki is a narrow V-4 with oil injection under the cowling (you always have gravity flow) and power tilt and trim. This is quite a bit heavier than the other popular 90hp's of that year, such as the YAMAHA which was a 3 cylinder engine, with tilt and trim, and weighted in at 260 lbs. The MERCURY was also a 3 cylinder but weighed in at a hefty 288 lbs. The Whaler dealer at the time warned me away from the Yamaha's saying that they ran hot after a few years of service because of their lack of weight (volume of metal). All I know is my Suzuki is still running strong. |

![]() ![]() ![]() 514 lbs per NADA guides. http://www.nadaguides.com/Boats/2002/Evinrude/E200FPXSN/20002833/ Outboard-Motors |

![]() ![]() ![]() My copy of the 2002 operating manual says 537 lbs for the 25 inch shaft length and 515 lbs for the 20 inch length. You have a 25 inch length according to the model number. |
elvis |
![]() ![]() ![]() Hi Peter, yes, you are correct, if is a 25" lower unit. Hard to believe a motor can weigh some 500+ pounds! Thanks! |
