I do it annually because I am inclined [that way]. I imagine that never is okay, too. It will never rust.

On average I paint mine every eleven years. The last time I painted one was when detailing my boat before showing it to a very interested buyer.

I paint mine every season. Sometimes more paint, other times less. This sort depend on how often I check the water depth with the skeg of my outboard. :)
I use a zinc chromate as the primer for bare metal let that setup and paint it to match the rest of the motor. Wax it about a month after its been painted.

Until it gets real bad I don't bother because it won't probably last an hour. Skegs can't rust by the way Newtauk.

It won't rust, but it can corrode.
Generally speaking, I view this as a fall maintenance item before the engine is winterized.
That said, there are some years when the weather won't cooperate or I'm winterizing too late (temps) to do it.
One of the drawbacks to the easy maintenance/winterization on the E-TECs was that there was no real point in time when you winterized the boat 'for good' - you just winterized it automatically and pulled it back out if you had a good day.
If operating in saltwater, I think I'd work even harder to keep paint on the skeg - just for the corrosion protection.

Mine does not corrode and has not had paint on it since 2006.

Nick -
Bare aluminum will oxidize/corrode over time. It's a law of the universe. There was only a couple people in history who have broken those kinds of laws, and they had help.
:)
I didn't say it would be catastrophic corrosion, but I do suspect your skeg has oxidized some over time, if you look closely.

One way to remove the corrosion is to run into some more sand...
Skeg painting is at the bottom of my list right there with trailer decals.

Probably because I keep polishing it when I drive.
