Hi all. The eyes, [Norman] pin, stanchions, [combined sidelight], and [white all-round] light fastener on my 1989 Montauk 17 are worn and dull. Is it best to have them re-chromed? Or, is it more practical to just replace them with parts from a vendor like Specialty Marine? What's more cost-effective? Is re-chroming usually available from a body shop?
Thanks. I'm sure this has come up before and I'm interested in any experiences about best way to go. Thanks--Jim.

I am sure others will opine differently, here are my thoughts:
1) I hate to generate waste when I might re-use something
2) The more you re-chrome, the cheaper it ends up being. Bring as much in as you can at one time
3) Good re-chroming is expensive
4) Specialty Marine fills a niche, but the caliber of the materials is lacking, in my opinion

Different shops do different levels of work but a good plating shop will return your hardware to better-than-new condition.
This is far preferable to trying to replace those parts with aftermarket parts which may, or may not, fit. Specialty Marine's products are very low quality. I do not recommend buying anything from them.

I have to agree that rechroming original parts is better than trying to replace them.I just replated a bunch of piece's off my 1981 18 outrage I am rebuilding and have to say they look new and it was cheaper than replacing the parts with lower quality replacements.The marinium parts off the boat were just polished and not rechromed.They also came up to new condition.The average part was about $20-25 a piece to replate.Good Luck

Frankford Plating in Philly just over the Betsy Ross Bridge. They do great work - but two points of caution - 1 - its not cheap (but you get what you pay for) - 2 - don't be in a rush - it will take at least a month.

Look around for a local re-chromer.
I'm lucky, I have a good one here.
I hated to discard the quality items, original to the boat. So, I didn't.
The local re-chrome shop was 2/3 the price of of the jippo stuff on ebay. I now have top quality and beauty, for a great price.
