[The 280 OUTRAGE] came with the new line of Boston Whaler Outrage models. Everything seemed normal in the boat--nice console set up, new, more spacious layout, and a pair of 300-HP outboards on the transom. Yes, twin 300's on a 28-footer. But performance is sub-par. With a top speed of 56-MPH, it is the fastest [Boston Whaler boat that] [I] know of, but [I] KNOW 600-HP can push a boat much faster than [56-MPH]. Please post and comment.

Yes I do believe that twin 300's should push that boat much faster than mid 50's. I have a 1991 27 walkaround with twin e-tec 250's and I have gotten up to 50 MPH.

Your use of the term "sub-par" would seem to indicate you have compared this performance to other, similar boats, and found it wanting. Perhaps you'd care to do your own homework, then summarize it for us, rather than simply posting a critical comment with no meaningful data behind it.

We might be losing sight of what a whaler is... One thing for sure a speedboat it is NOT. If you lighten up the boat (shed some weight) and change the hull to a less aggressive one, you will certainly get that boat going faster.

This is sort of like saying I have a 500hp motor is my car and its really not that fast. Put that motor is a 70's era car (lead sled) and it will be ok in a straight line but eh in terms of pickup and top speed.

Take a 500 hp motor and stick it into a light weight/body aerodynamic car and you get a supercar that'll fly. (if you can keep it on the road)

Yup, mid fifties should be characterized as sluggish, maybe it's not propped right, maybe the motors need to be raised,
maybe sea or water conditions are a factor, ie was it 3 foot seas?, loaded with fuel and 6 people on board? or just that the Whaler is a heavy boat. My 255 Conquest can reach 48 WOT with a pair of 200 HPDI's.

Whaler publishes performance data on the 28 with twin 300s.

They say 58-MPH at WOT. Test weight was over 9,000-lbs.

The published performance data from tests conducted by Boston Whaler on their production boat models has generally been very strongly correlated with performance of actual boats purchased.

Boat speed is affected by many influences:

--weight
--weather
--sea conditions
--skill of operator

thanks for the feedback, i recently took a ride on one of these boats. the twin 300's pushed the boat to around 60 mph in a small chop, we didn't feel any of it. props were not stock and the engine were raised slightly
