Can someone give me the email address of the person or dept. at Boston Whaler that can give me the info on a 13 sport I just bought. The title says 1974 but it has a blue interior and cut transom, but also has a smirk front. Seems to be between the model descriptions on this site. Thanks. |

There was only one year of production the 13' with the newer smirked hull and rounded splash well but still with a 15" transom. That year was 1971. Your hull's serial number stenciled on the transom should be something between 2A5601 and 2A7800. See: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/13/ Chuck Bennett will verify. |

My stenciled number is 2A8828. The boat also has a black rub rail and a stainless steel steering wheel. The prior owner represented that all was original. Thanks for the additional information. |

Perhaps it may have been possible to order a boat with the blue gelcoat after 1971. Anyone know about that? The Whaler people were rather accomodating, so perhaps if a customer wanted blue gelcoat he could get it as a special order. This might explain the gelcoat color. Explaining why a boat molded in 1974 would have a 15-inch transom is more difficult, as that would imply using different molds. Please let us know what you find on this. It is also possible a dealer had a boat hanging around unsold that was molded in 1971 but not sold until 1974. It might get titled as a "1974" boat, depending on how the paperwork was done and what state it was sold in. That list of serial numbers (which pre-date the Federally required HIN markings) is probably subject to further verification. I'd use it as a guideline more than an absolute determinant. |

Another thought on this: At that time I believe it was the practice of the factory to mold boat hulls on speculation and then await orders for finished boats from the dealers. It is possible that the boat you have could have been molded earlier, sat at the factory for some time, then finally have been sold to fulfill a dealer's order a year or two later. Let's say it was still unsold when the decision was made to change to a new transom height and gelcoat color in 1972. Whaler would not stop the introduction of a new model just because they had a couple of the old hulls sitting around the plant unsold. In this scenario, the hull might have been sitting a couple of years before some dealer bought it. Or maybe the factory offered it at a special price, etc., to clear it out. Now all boats are built to order. [Changed topic; was "Production Trace"--jimh] |

Chuck can settle this in a second. I thought 72 was the last of the blue 13's or was that the 16's? |

1972 is the last year for blue and the first year for smirk on a 13. I know I have one The serial # is 1972. Highwater had one too, the one he just sold on ebay. Regards, Jay |

According to Chuck Bennett at Boston Whaler, my boat #2A8828 was shipped out to Sordes Boat Exchange in Metarie, LA on 5/25/72. Thanks to those who offered me information on this boat. Jim Basque, Orlando, Fl. |
