Many have speculated about the outboard motor market and how it is divided among the various manufacturers. Here are some actual numbers with cited sources. "Worldwide outboard motor demand is steady at around 800,000 units a year..." "...current annual Yamaha production of outboard motors [is] around 250,000 units...." Source: http://www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/global/news/2000/06/06/outboard.html These figures seem to imply that Yamaha's market share of global outboard production is about 31-percent as of early 2000. This is in good agreement with December 2007 data: "Worldwide, Yamaha holds approximately a 30 percent market share in outboard motors. Today, almost one of every three outboards purchased in the U.S. is a Yamaha and close to one of every two sold over 150 hp is a Yamaha." Source: http://www.boating-industry.com/output.cfm?id=961507 Wow--That is quite a number: "close" to a 50-percent market share in over 150-HP outboard motors. A Wisconsin newspaper said in June of 2005: "Sales figures are closely held by the companies, but Mercury claims to have about a 38% share of the U.S. outboard engine market. Yamaha is probably in second place, according to industry analysts, followed by BRP, Suzuki, Honda and Nissan in no definite order. Contribution of other figures is welcomed, but please include sources and citations. |

According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) statistics, the total number of outboard motor sales in the U.S. has basically been flat since 2001 at just slightly more than 300,000 units. See 2006 abstract at www.nmma.org/facts/boatingstats/2006/files/Abstract.pdf . It's probably not much of a suprise given all the headlines regarding the subprime fiasco that 2004 and 2005 had the highest volume during that period. Apparently, it seems that some folks back then may have been converting their instant subprime backed paper wealth into outboard motors. |
