Have any of the 17 or 170 Montauk owners out there come up with an effective way to shade the bow area for lounging while anchored? This is my favorite lounging area but the bimini does not provide shade at the bow most of the time and the sun in Virginia in the middle of the summer can be too much at times. |

Geez, I would try the Bow Dodger option, or perhaps some number 50. |

Mills sells a bow dodger for your boat. Try searching this site for "bow + dodger + 170". Lots of good information out there. |

I did a quick search and came up with this link on Mill's site: http://ww2.millscanvas.com/Product_Detail.CFM?ProductID=208 Unless they have changed it, you won't be able to use the front cleat (my '08's front cleat is in a different spot). Seems like it it would make the boat hard to dock. |

We use the Magma rail mount Boat Umbrella. Magma part number B10-401 (multi-color) or B10-402 (Blue). From the same people the make the Magma BBQ grills. Very high quality, windproof design and adjustable. |

sapple, I know what you are talking about, at anchor you can run out of shade pretty fast. We sometimes put a beach umbrella in a rail mounted rod holder and this works if there is not too much wind. Never did but I have thought about taking a piece of sunbrella and tie it off to the forward part of the bimini and rig two old 5 foot boat rods in my two forward rail mounted rod holders as tent poles. I might get some looks but if me didn`t look cool we`d still feel cool:) All the best, David |

frontier, thanks for the tip. Are you satisfied with the preformance of the Magma? |

Yes, we are satisfied with the Magma Boat Umbrella. Magma makes good quality stuff. It's close to 6' diameter, adjustable and will fit 7/8" or 1" rails. Easy to store when not in use. Comes with a storage bag. |

Does anyone know if there is a supplier for full canvas, parts and pieces, for late model 170 Montauks? I understand that BW no longer sources from Mills so am not sure if Mills products are compatable with the original equipment bimini that comes with newer Montauks. |

The current supplier of Boston whaler Canvas is Great Lakes Boat Top Company: http://www.greatlakesboattop.com/bostonwhaler Wm J. Mills & Co. also supplies great quality products for your boat albeit no longer the eom canvas supplier of Boston Whaler. I would not hestitate to go with Mills. I found they are willing to make custom adjustments for your Boston Whaler boat setup. For example, I needed a console cover with a custom access flap for the antenna mount I installed on my console. Mills asked for dimensions and was more than willing to work with me on making a perfect fitting console cover. Great Lakes on the other hand told me "sorry, no can do". From what they told me Great Lakes does not make custom changes to what they produce. "As is" only. My 2 cents. -Seth |

I looked at the Magma Boat Umbrella - part number B10-401. Cute. It may have a windproof design but I doubt I'd want to have it up when I was planing away. Looks more like a beach umbrella for use when at anchor. |

..which is what you're looking for so that may be your least expensive option. |

Sapple, there is no need to use Mills Canvas or Great Lakes for new canvas parts for your Montauk. Any reputable boat canvas shop in your area has access to the same Sunbrella fabric used to make your OEM canvas accessories. Anywhere there is a collection of marinas or boat dealers, there is sure to be a number of local canvas shops. They can work with you to make any kind of custom canvas accessory you can think of. You shouldn't have any problem finding somebody to make a bimini top which extends further forward than your current bimini top. The prices at your local canvas shops are likely to be cheaper also, because you will not have to pay for shipping. Ask around at a local marina for the names of some of the best canvas companies in your area. |

I knew the local canvas shop vs. Mills/OEM canvas would arise sooner rather than later. There are many such arguments on CW if you do the searching. Here is one such thread (but there are many) |

Since it sounds like sapple is looking for something custom made, it probably does not make a lot of sense to go through Mills. If you're looking for prefabricated pieces made for Boston Whalers, Mills is a good idea. However, I do not believe Mills offers a forward bimini top extension. I hate to provide a link to what is most likely a temporary webpage, but there is a picture of an extended bimini top here: http://www.starkeyhome.com/index_crownline.asp |

Go through a local canvas company if possible. Be specific in the materials you want as well as the design. Mills is nothing special. I have Mills products and custom made products. The materials are the same. Deal locally if possible on canvas. You will be much happier with the results. |

Actually I am looking for two distinct applications. In the short term, I want to shade the bow area for lounging while at anchor. More longer term, I am thinking about how to extend the uses of my boat either furher into cooler weather seasons or possibly even overnighting. It looks like the Magma fits the bill for my initial objective. |

Not bashing Mills at all with previous post. I just like the benefits from a custom job that can be done on sight from a quality canvas maker. They are easier to work with in terms of repairs as well versus mailing canvas back to Mills. |

Sapple, I purchased the Magma Boat Umbrella last week that frontier has. My father would like to get a bimini that he can stand under for his 15CC and at a reasonable price. With him heading down to the Keys I figured I'd buy the Magma Umbrella and he could use until he found a reasonably priced bimini. I shopped around and West "Over Priced" Marine had them only in multi-colored for $68. Figuring that was way to much for something that would only be used a short time and that the multi-colored screamed sandy beach and/or the gay rainbow I hit the web to see if I could find it cheaper as well as something looking as "marine" as an umbrella can look. I found it in BLUE at wholesalemarine.com Manufacturer: MAGMA Much better than the $ 68 West Marine wanted. I even got a spare tire mount for about $11. $5 cheaper than West Marine. Chris |

That looks like a good deal. Another option is the square shaped Anchorshade by Taylormade. It comes with some straps so you can tie the four corners down too. Just another big umbrella, but it works. |

That is a good deal. I wish I had waited for your post because on Saturday I ordered one from Magma for $79.99. |

MDCrabs, That looks like a nice set up. Depending upon future circumstances, I plan to either do the same thing with my Montauk or get an additional boat for foul weather and over night cruising like a C-Dory. |
