Just wondered if anyone has had any issues with the original gas tank that came with the 17' Montauk back in 2003. I think it is around 26 gallons and made of some type of plastic materials. A mechanic told me that ethanol gas may cause deterioration of the tank of some sort. thanks Dan |

If it is plastic, it will be fine. If fiberglass, it should be replaced immediately. The original tanks sold with the boat were 2 6 gallon tempo brand portables. Many mebers have replaced them with Tempo or Moeller 12 or 24-26 gallon tanks. The Tempo brand is no longer available, Moeller offers several sizes that fit under the RPS. |

The one I have may be fiberglass and the mechanic said the company is no longer in business. I will pull it out tomorrow. Thanks for your input. Dan |

You probably have an original Pate fibreglass tank like me. I'm replacing it with a Moeller 24 gallon tank (already ordered - these things can take some time to get here to Australia). Don't risk your motor, the new tanks are not expensive and a small price to pay for security. There are extensive threads on this site re replacing original tanks...including with Moeller ... WAIT!!!! If you fill up with ethanol free fuel such as at a marina or certain gas stations, the Pate tank will be fine. There are many advatages of using marina fuel with all the additives they put in it. If you add up all the stuff they include plus the cost of a new tank, it might take a decade to justify the $1+/- more it costs. I have a 35 year old tank on my Whaler(under deck) so I won't risk using pump gas...plus it is good for a year which is nice considering pump gas lasts maybe a month before it sours. |

Got mine from boatbandit.com which was cheaper than anywhere else I could find. Looks great installed. My Pate tank was seeping gas around the edges, and had already been cut and repaired by a previous owner, so even "new" fiberglass work didn't keep ethanol gas from eating it up. Here's a link to the tank on Boat Bandit: |

Correct me if I'm wrong but the factory supplied tanks for all model year Montauk 170s were/are twin 6.6 Gallon Quicksilver tanks. It sounds like you bought your boat with a 24 or 26 gallon Pate tank. Pate has gone out of business. Their tanks are not ethonal friendly. Replace it ASAP. |

This would be my first choice if going to a single point of failure, uh, I mean a single tank solution. |

I took the Pate tank out today since your input confirmed what a mechanic told me. Sure was a handy 27 gallon tank but did not like ethanol. Thanks for your input, Dan |

Just buy ethanol free gas and continue to use it then. |
