I'm going to look at a 17 Outrage tomorrow. It is a 1992. Anything specific I should be looking for on this particular hull. It has a 2009 Yamaha 2 stroke 90 HP, Do you think it is under powered? Any info is appreciated. Thanks |

Depends on what you're looking for. I have a 95 w/ 115 Johnson, same year, probably low hours - incredible boat. Special boat. Most are powered w/ 115, I think max is 130. My bet is Yamaha 2 stroke will be just fine - depending on your needs. Should do everything you need it to do. That Outrage 17 vintage is just a damn nice boat, I take my into Lake Michigan (live right next to it) all the time in some nasty stuff, chop crazy wave patterns going through pier heads w/ river current, lots of boat and motor yacht wakes, choppy Lake Mich and it does extremely well for a 17 foot boat. I have talked to many Montauk owners who went to Outrage 17 ( and not fair weather boaters) because of the Outrage hull design, better ride, better in nasty stuff, cuts waves and on and on. What are you looking for? There are no drawbacks to Outrage 17 as far as I'm concerned. I don't fault Montauks either - |

I don't think it will be underpowered. That particular model is sometimes described as stern-weight sensitive so a lightweight engine is desirable. I have a 1991 of the same model with an E-Tec 90hp and can reach 40mph with a light load on glass-like conditions but can do 38mph anyday. It also sip gas. As said, it's a terrific boat. |

This boat is a complete DOG! I mean genuine salty dog that is. Small but mighty easy to trailer and reasonable in price. I'm still kicking myself about passing up on a beauty for 8K at the time that was a steal. One thing I didn't like was a factory stern option that had a bait tank and storage. Great idea but it takes up a great deal of space in this boat due to its stature and it may end up adding unfavorable weight. Martyn |

As it has been stated, the Outrage 17 I (1990-1995) is sensitive to engine weight. The classic Yamaha 90 hp is a light and very reliable so kudos' to you!!! I owned a 1991 model for 7 years and still miss her.... With the motor mounted at least 2 holes up and a good stainless propeller, you will enjoy speed! Post some photos when you have a chance. |

Good for you and welcome to an elite club with few members! Phil T knows this boat model for sure and I agree with him, the Yamaha will probably be just fine. I am curious about what stern configuration you have - my boat has quarter seats with a removable compartment in the middle with lid which I think is great. It's interesting that passengers often find their way back and ride those seats. I assume your boat has a swim ladder - super nice for us when we go to the beaches on Lake Mich. My boat just makes 40 or so MPH, plenty fast and I had the motor raised up by Lockeman's and got a MPH or 3. I don't get all hung up on that - she rolls along just fine. Post some photos. Congratulations. |

Very nice, I've seen these shots before. Did you cut hole in console floor for batteries? Previous owner did that on my boat - I have one battery and adding a second sometime soon. I'm not sure that hole makes any sense except freeing up space in the console. |
saumon |

Yes, I cut the holes. It save some space but the deck is also a lot stronger than the 1/2" plywood shelf to support the 120lbs of batteries. |

OK Gentlemen, sorry for the delayed response but some unfortunate circumstances came up and I did'nt want to jump the gun. Shortly before picking up the boat the seller put the sale on hold citing family issues (his father did'nt want him to sell) So, I waited holding my breath and alas she is mine!! I just picked her up and I have her sitting in the driveway waiting til daylight to play with my new toy. I'm very excited and want to thank all for the info. P.S. I am in Port St. Lucie Florida transplanted from Babylon Long Island NY. |

Whew - Glad you pulled it off. We have good friend who winters in Melbourne who we visit often. He is looking for a boat like yours for up his way. He has a 13 in SW Michigan but Outrage 17 or 18 would be perfect for his use intent. We went down your way last trip and I was impressed with the area. What a great place to have an Outrage 17! Enjoy it. |

Interestingly the previous owner of my boat didn't want to let it go - we got into a bit of a tangle about it, he was really on the fence and misty eyed when I hitched it up and was ready to pull away. Funny he gave me a ton of stuff and when I was loading he refused to let me put stuff in the boat - like frames he built to support the tarp for winter storage, boxes of stuff etc - He said "oh no, nothing goes in the boat when it's trailered...." I thought to my self "I own this boat now buckaroo..." but it was emotional. So I started piling stuff in and on top of my 4 Runner, and when he left to go to work, I threw what I needed to in the boat and got the hell out of there - |

Pete, there is a 17 on Craigslist right now in Miami for I think 9000.00 I believe its a 1995 with a Johnson if hes interested. I dont think this guy was really interested in letting it go also but I think he needed the money. He called the boat "His Wife" If that were the case with me" I would definetly want to let her go!!!!" mine has two corner seats and a well in the middle between the two. I seen the pictures of your baitwell set up that looks very interesting where does the water feed from? and exit to? Was it hard to do? That is something i would like to do on mine. Also , you moved your batteries from under the seat in the back to in the center consol? I would like to do that as well. |

What about adding a small T top? anyone ever do that? I would like a T top instead of the Bimini top. |
Phil T |
posted 11-21-2013 03:45 PM ET (US)
I would not install a T-top for several reasons: -No added backer pieces in the floor to attach the top. For non-Outrage I owners, let me explain. With a classic Montauk or Outrage 18, when you step off a dock onto the deck, the boat does not list measurably. With the Outrage 17 I, the boat does list, and can catch you off balance. When you are driving or standing at the console and a passenger goes up to the bow, the boat will heal over a measurable amount. This is not a problem, just one attribute for this model. Consider a bimini that stores forward in the bow. I had one and it worked great. |

I agree its a mighty boat but it really is still small in stature. Its 17 feet after all. The t-top to me for the reasons above would be a hassle also the looks of the 17 outrage with a top might not look that sharp. A nice thing about the 17 foot outrage is that one could fit it in their standard size garage. T-top version not a chance. Martyn |

The boat came with a Bimini top but I dont like the fact it blocks the sides when fighting large fish and you have to shuffle sround. The T Top would eliminate that. Have you ever seen a 17 Outrage with a T Top? There is no wood in the deck at all? |
martyn1075 |
posted 11-21-2013 06:15 PM ET (US)
Rotten that problem you mentioned goes with any Whaler with a bimini. Its the way they are designed. T-top will fix that problem thats for sure but they have some serious considerations to be determined. Martyn |

There are narrow strips of embedded wood for attaching the console. You could fabricate a modified L bracket to include tabs at the corners of the console on the floor to mount a top, the lateral instability will be pronounced due to the added weight above the gunnel. One option which has been has been widely discussed is a T-Topless by RNR Marine. Do a search (under NEW TOPIC). http://www.rnr-marine.com/Montauk-T-Topless.shtml If I, personally, had to have a top for this model, I would go with a T-Topless since it will provide the cover, not impinge on the narrow walkway to the bow and is not as heavy as a typical T-Top. |

Rotten - I agree with Phil, I spend a lot of time on my Outrage 17 and he is dead on; you have to worry about what you are going to bolt a T top to. Plus he's pulled up the deck panels on his boat and know what's underneath. It is tippier than other models but not horrible. I actually bought Phil's Mills Bimini from his Outrage 17 and it is installed on my boat most of the time. I use it sometimes. It's a great addition and great to have when we need it. Whaler has prints available that show mounting points for each boat. Not sure how you intend to use the boat but it's not a Bertram or Tiara sportfishing boat. We fish with ours all the time - it's great but we understand the advantages and limitations. I have one fishin pal who says only two people can fish out of it - but he brings have his worldly possessions every trip, packs the boat to the gunwales. I assume you need shelter from hot sun when you fish - that's a consideration. Perhaps you call Mills and talk to Suzanne for ideas specific to your use. We've fished with Bimini up and it gets a bit crazy but we make it work. You'll figure it out. |

PhilT That is perfect!! I believe the T Topless is the way to go. That will kill my 2 birds with one stone, shade for my wife and I and no infringment on the sides like the Bimini has. Thank you for the suggestion. It's good to have this resource to get to converse with people who know thier stuff. Believe me, you guys have not heard the last from me, I'm sure (if you dont mind) I'll have alot more questions pertaining to this model. Thanks |

I think the following (story) is significant. My wild buddy blew up two OMC outboards on his 1971 Outrage 21 (ribbed) before he bought a 200 FICHT. Now that setup was freaking awesome - major hole shot and over 50 WOT. I saw him pull multiple tubes full of kids and adults no problem. He had a plethora of FICHT issues until he finally said enough and repowered with an ETEC last year. He struggled between 200 or close (not sure of HP options) because he did not want to lose top end and hole shot and ultimately decided on ETEC 150 HP. He confirmed some loss of power and top speed (not much) but he is perfectly happy with the decision (and he does not play). In fact I saw him Thursday when I was winterizing my 1995 115 and he said "hey man, all I have to do is push a button.... Hehehe, get off your wallet!" - and he went on to say the 150 choice was perfect for his boat, plenty of power, smaller and lighter. That might influence me to go 90 ETEC instead of 115 when I repower. |

Will do Pete, I have not got her wet yet. I just need to get a few more little things ironed out. So far I Drained and completely cleaned out the fuel tank. Replaced Fuel Filter/ Water seperator. New sending unit (fuel gauge did'nt work) Totally Re-wired the trailer. Filled in all the nicks in the Gelcoat with Marine tex. Filled in all the spider cracks in the gelcoat wit CA glue. ( it really works great for this purpose it dries clear and fills in the smallest of cracks) Re rigged my Anchor to the Ty wrap system with the shackle on the bottom (in case of a hang up) Mounted a new Fire extinguisher. Put new 15 inch tires and rims on the trailer. Put in new Perko on /off switch. Changed lower unit gearcase oil. Changed out Tilt/Trim fluid. Put in a new Stereo. Washed and Waxed her. It has Lenco trim tabs so I dont have a swim platform. I want to make the well in the rear a livewell next. She is insured and registered. I will sign up with Boat U.S. next week and put her in the water. Got to think up a good name for her. My 320 Outrage was named "Vicious" so I was thinking "Lil Vicious" But I'm not sure. Maybe "Outrageous" I'm still debating. |

George - While this thread is discussing a Outrage 17 I (1990-1995), you are referring to an Outrage 17 II (1998-1999) . A boat that has completely different dimensions and design. A T-top on an Outrage 17 II would be a great addition. It was offered as an option. Note Jerry Townsend's comments on this thread. He owns one (or did). Galtfan has photos linked on this thread (bottom) Regards. |
