Been off the site for a while but I would appreciate some advice. I'll be in Houston for about 3 weeks this month and would like some intel on Surfing the Tanker Wake in the Galveston Shipping Channel. I'd rather rent a boat than trailer ours, it is about 30 hours round trip. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank in advance, |

Not sure why I read this or why I am posting except sounded fun so did a search and found this: http://wavecation.com/galveston-tanker-surfing looks like you can charter for this. ... and they use a whaler so... cool. Hang 10 |

Tanker wake surfing was including in the beautifully photographed surfing movie STEP INTO LIQUID, which has been the topic of some prior discussions. See: Houston Ship Channel surfing Boston Whaler in surf movie “Step into Liquid” Whaler Appearance in Movie Step Into Liquid |

The tanker surfing was an urban legend for a long time. Step into Liquid confirmed it about 11 years ago. How perfectly appropriate that a Whaler was the delivery vehicle! Not sure that I want to go the charter route. Kinda seems like cheating to find that "secret spot". I'll take any intel I can get, or be shown by someone, but don't want to pay for it. I've done a lot of research, but I'm lacking any real local knowledge. Just hoping someone might want to chime in. I've got a friend who is relatively new to the area and a lifelong boater. He has big go fast boats, but has access to a Montauk. The best part is; he wants to drive the boat, not surf. What I know is put in at Texas City Dike, surf points east. Any local input would be appreciated. 2 days off from work to make it happen with friends coming from NC and Colorado to check off the "bucket list". Thanks again. Mike |

I live in Texas City and have launched at the dyke many times. I have on seen this tanker wave one time. Way off in the distance, I thought it was a tsunami. I look for this every time I launch now. The time I saw it, I ran out there, and ran up the back of the wave and off the crest several times, I felt like it was 7 or 8' high and not breaking, more of a never ending swell. That day, it was smooth conditions. I would think you would want somewhat light winds, it's open bay. If you launch on the dyke, just head north up the Houston ship channel and watch for tankers coming out of Houston. The one I saw was outbound and loaded. |
