What [does a 2008 Boston Whaler 170 MONTAUK sell] for now in good condition? Are there any [concerns about the Mercury] 90 FOURSTROKE? Thanks. |

[Used price] depends on a number of factors: Condition I gave $18,000 for a 2006 last summer. I think they are north of $30,000 brand new with options and a trailer. The Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE EFI is a great motor. |

Mercury made three types of 90-HP four-stroke-power-cycle engines they have called the FOURSTROKE: --a Yamaha-made engine with carburetors --a Yamaha-made engine with simple fuel injection --a Mercury-made engine based on the VERADO block with fuel injection To get an idea about the asking price for used Boston Whaler boats, visit a boat listing website like BOATTRADER.COM. Use their search feature. You will typically find dozens of Boston Whaler boats in the 17-foot range listed for sale with the asking price given and clear information on the details. I suggest you undertake such a search, collect the price data, and give us a report on your findings. Collecting anecdotal opinions from readers here will not give you very much hard data. And keep in mind that the initial retail price of a 170 MONTAUK when it appeared in c.2002 was about $17,655. See http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/170Montauk/ That the price has risen in 12 years to more than $30,000 is somewhat hard to fathom. |

So how do you know which Merc is on the transom? |

If the Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE cowling shape looks like a hair dryer from a lady's hair salon in the 1950's, and the cowling is disproportionately large, the engine uses the VERADO-based 1.7-liter engine. Otherwise, if the cowling looks like a 200-HP Mercury two-cycle engine, then the engine is a Yamaha four-cycle. In the final year or two of buying the Yamaha engines, Mercury put simple fuel injection on the engine to replace the carburetors. The carburetors were somewhat notoriously prone to clogging and failures, and need continual cleaning. There are many archives that go into great detail about all the problems of the Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE with carburetors built on the Yamaha block. At one point, Mercury went so far as to take some of those engines back with very favorable terms to be replaced with new engines using the VERADO block. This was not publicly known, but customers who complained strongly got replacement engines at attractive trade-in prices. But it is getting even more confusing. Brunswick just came out in June 2014 with a new Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE based on an entirely new block of 2.1-liter displacement. So the designator "Mercury 90-HP FOURSTOKE" can apply to four rather distinctly different engines. Since Mercury dropped model year designators, there is really no way to identify these except to go into detail about which engine block is used and what sort of fuel induction is provided. I think by 2008 that Yamaha had refused to sell Mercury any more engines, and Mercury was adapting their VERADO 1.7-liter engine without the supercharger and without out who-knows-what other high-end parts to become a 90-HP, plain-jane, simple, fuel injection engine. This engine was known as the VERADITO because it was a reduced or petite version of the VERADO. That engine is probably what you'd find on a c.2008 170 MONTAUK. They seem to be nice engines, although large in size and a bit heavy for a 90-HP. |

Around the early 2000's, the 4 stroke Mercs were carburator engine made by Yamaha. Around the mid 2000's the 4 stroke Mercs were EFI engine made by Yamaha. The Mercury on my 2006 Montauk 170 is an EFI Yamaha block. Toward the later 2000's, Mercury had its stuff together and were making their own blocks. |

There is a very unusual problem with Brunswick's Mercury brand of outboard engines and their model designators: they keep reusing the same model designator over and over for completely different models. All the other outboard engine makers distinguish different models by using different model names. For example, by adding a letter like "A" or "B" to the end of the model name, or in some way very simply indicating clearly the particular engine. It is only with Brunswick's Mercury brand that you can have four significantly different engines all called by the same model designator. I am surprised that a MONTAUK sold in c.2006 was being manufactured with that Yamaha-made 90-HP on the transom. I thought that Yamaha had shut off the supply to Brunswick by then. Maybe it was some old stock on hand. |

When I went to the Mercury dealer to get a new oil filter for the 90 on my 2006 I didn't have the model number or serial number with me. I got home and the filter I'd gotten was larger in diameter than the one on my engine. I went back with the model number and serial number and got the smaller, correct filter. And, it's the same filter as on my neighbor's 115 hp Yamaha. |

The Mercury 90 FOURSTOKE from the [Verado]-based line should be a good motor. I have the 115-HP of the same [Verado]-based line. The only [component] that went bad was a pencil coil. |

I agree; the Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE based on the 1.7-liter VERADO block, also commonly called the VERADITO as a shortcut for avoiding having to say "the Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE based on the 1.7-liter Verado block", is much preferred to the Yamaha engine with carburetors. There are not very many Yamaha engines with fuel injection painted up as Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE engines, but if you have one of them, it is also preferable to the carburetor engine. As for the carburetor engine, reports of problems with them have dwindled. That could be because the owners learned how to avoid the clogging of the carburetor by continually doping their gasoline with additives to keep the carburetors clean, or by following other operational procedures to reduce the clogging. For a while the discussion of carburetors on the Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE was a very frequent maintenance topic. To be right to the point in answering the initial question--are there any concerns about the Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE--there are concerns. Look out for the Yamaha engine with carburetors, and if you are about to buy one, have some discussion with the seller about how it runs. Maybe the seller has some solution to the clogging problem to pass along. |
