This summer has been a great one as far as using our Whaler.  We have been out on it every weekend over the summer and some, we were out both days.  This has gotten me thinking and I have been kicking around the idea of going larger again.  While I do love my Newport and what it offers for my Family, I do think it may be time to move.  Part of me wants some more open deck space for more passengers and part of me has the itch for change.  While I do have access to our 23 Walkaround Whaler Drive, it stays up in Northern Michigan most of the Season for the extended family to use while they are up at the house.  That makes it hard for me to use around here when I need it.

So, with that I thought I would through the idea out about trading up to a Larger Whaler and I am open to ideas / offers.  I would be open to something that while not perfect out of the gate has good bones and is in general in good working order.  19 or 21 Banana hulled Outrages and Revenges, 18, V-20, 20, and 22 Outrages, maybe a V-20 Revenge, 22 Revenge or a 20 / 22 Revenge W/T are all of interest.

I suppose I would consider selling the Newport without a trade deal but, it would take the right offer.  That said, to sell it outright I would likely be in the $10,000 range.

Here are the details on my Newport:
The Hull: 1976 Boston Whaler Newport - Never been bottom painted
The motor: 1974 Evinrude StarFlite 85hp V4 - Like Hull 100% Freshwater Use
The Trailer: early 90's Painted Eagle Bunk Trailer

I bought the boat back in December of 2007 from Jeff Holmes.  This is the very boat that is shown on Cetacean Page 66 ( http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage66.html ) but, I have extensively updated it from when it was showcased there.

Here are a list of updates I have done since I got the boat motor and Trailer:

2010:
Removed Old Fenders and Steps on Trailer and had New Bracketed Welded on and Installed New Plastic Step Fenders
Added a New Pig Tail for Vehicle Wiring Hook Up
Added new LED fender Lights

2009:
Got a new used Eagle Bunk Trailer Custom Fit for 17 Whaler Hull from Sal Arnuk

Removed re-polished and reinstalled all stainless and chrome fittings
Lots and lots of little gel coat repairs on the sides of the stern thanks to a boat lift

Installed a 50 amp Blue Seas Main Breaker
De-rigged motor and completely stripped, sanded, and repainted the motor.  Made new decals as well.  Then re-rigged with new cable ends, battery lines and fuel lines
Removed old CMC aftermarket tilt unit.
Purchased and installed a used period correct OEM OMC unit with new dash switch
Installed new Ritchie D-85 Compass
Stripped, Sanded and Refinished OEM 12 Gallon tanks
Sanded and Refinished the RPS Z Legs
Moved RPS Aft 3 Inches
Replace Missing and Old Molding Around the Gunnel Openings
Installed Bilge Pump

The Motor: 1974 Evinrude Starflite 85hp V4
The motor is in great Working order.  I have a original hours log book and all the original sale literature that came with the motor.  All told since new the motor has about 250 freshwater only hours.  It still starts up with easy today with ease, idles smooth and pushes the boat to speeds that are nearly the same as other more modern 90hp motors...Even a 90hp E-TEC of today.  I love this motor, not only does it complement the boat so well aesthetically, but it also a joy to run.  Last time I did a compression test was when I bought the boat.  At that time all cylinders read in the One Hundred teens area if I remember correctly.  I have a compression tester and can get the numbers next time I have the boat home.

Thread I were I have recorded Performance Data on the Boat:

Other Options / Accessories
The boat has the original Mills Forward Shelter and Bimini top in duck cloth cotton in the toast color.  These pieces are super cool vintage items but, the cotton does show it's age which is why I do not keep them on the boat.  It also has an New Old Stock Mills windscreen in Pacific Blue to complete the fowl weather enclosure and after Market Bimini in Pacific Blue.  There is a full custom Sunbrella mooring cover and motor cover as well that is in Pacific Blue.  This is older but still works very well.  I also have a complete Red Rub Rail insert and Receiver Track kit for the boat.  I would not include this as an item that goes with the boat.  If there was a deal struck and the new owner wanted it, I would sell it to them.

Here are the most recent images I have of it:

All in all, the boat is very nice.  Understand that I am a perfectionist and would rate it as a solid 8 myself.  Your everyday person would rate it much higher.  Compared to others that I see and have seen on the market I feel my boat is far better and more OEM condition than most others.

If you have and questions about the boat feel free to contact myself at:

The Boat is currently located in the Northern Detroit Suburb of Oxford, Mi.

I think Jeff is too modest. This boat is probably in what anyone else would describe as "perfect condition."

I agree with jimh--absolutely stunning.

All I can say is that is one sharp trailer!

Jim,  Since you have actually seen the boat in person a couple times, your words do mean a great deal.  Thank You.

Poker, Thanks for the kinds words.

Sal, you know that trailer is the best trailer I have ever had under either of my 17's.  It is easy to load, the profile allows for easy shallow water launching and it pulls and cradles the boat so well over the road.  I like the trailer so much that I have basically rebuilt most of it.....and it got a new paint job this spring.

Good luck Jeff, she is one weet old girl. It sounds like you are in the same position I was when I sold my Montauk, those 16's are amazing but after a while you need to go a little bigger when you get the cruising itch and want to take the wife and kids.

My wife and kids love the 22, its been a great year of fishing and cruising so far. Good luck with the sale.

Good luck Jeff ! The kids must be getting older and like the boat. Now we all have to be on the Search for Jeff for the right boat.

Jeff,

Wow, parting with your Newport?! Such a nice rig overall. Jimh is correct, you are a bit harsh on your 8.0/10 rating, the old girl's a solid 9.0+ (but you have to clean under that battery box, lol!) Only a perfectionist would start their photobucket account with those couple of photos...

We've chatted a lot about boats, but I don't think I ever told you this. I've downloaded a number of photos of whalers and have set them up as rotating desktop images. A couple photos of your Newport are in that folder right along with photos of Larry's boats and a very few very select others that met my personal standards.

While you've actually had the privilege to enjoy her, she has provided me many countless moments of distraction. Whoever enjoys her next will indeed be very lucky.

times two to what jesse said. I have the Newport photobucket in my favorites.

Thank you for that, Jessie.

Jeff's boat is one of those examples where a buyer will be way ahead by purchasing a "9" boat at a fair price, needing practically nothing, rather than what looks like a cheap "beater" and spending a fortune in time and effort to bring it back. It's the nicest Newport I have even seen.

The same year classic Evinrude definitely adds to it's value also. It looks like a beauty.

Jeff - tell me you didn't install those snap studs into the side of the hull! If I was buying the boat, I would remove those. That's it.

LGH - agree totally, besides the ton of money a lot guessing and anxiety factor.

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

I may be harsh but, I want to be realistic. It's not perfect...but it's damn nice.

I will have the boat on Vacation in the coming weeks and will do a good photo shoot with it to get a new set of very detailed images of it.

Also, Larry the previous owner put those snaps on the hull. It's not my preference either but, they are there and the cover works well with them. In the future though, if I was to put a new cover on I would look at using the C-Clips from Mills.

Now on Craigslist.

Yes, It is now listed on craigslist.

I had someone who wanted to buy it but, we are unable to come to terms around payment and delivery.

So, I thought I would list it locally and see where things go.

Scott, honestly it's not. I am happy to see it go for what I wanted and to a family that REALLY wants the boat and will care of it. The Newport has served my family well but it's time to move on. I hope to be getting a Smooth-side 21Outrage next weekend.....fingers crossed.

Well you know me - only one thing better than the smooth sided outrage.......(not so smooth sided..lol) but heck Id love to have either of them right now. Only Whaler in my stable right now is the 13 and she stays in the NJ garage with about 4 weeks a year use.

Cant wait to see your next find.

Best of luck my friend.

Jeff, I think I made a prediction on your FB page that you would get a banana hull. I think at the time you were leaning 18 Outrage.

Good luck

Jeff,

I have three whalers, a 76 Newport, 90 Outrage and 2000 Ventura. The 76 Newport is my far my favorite! My father gave it to me and I have passed it on to my son. We are currently refurbishing it. Where did you find the front Rod holder seat backs and bottom cushion. Ours used to have the classic bucket seats which we no longer have. Can you still buy the seat setup you have or would you have to make them.

We live in Florida and have taken our Neuport whaler out over 30 miles and caught, sailfish, King Mackrel, dolphin and Wahoo. I am looking forward to taking it up to Acadia Natioal park in Maine next summer.

Jim,

I never liked the forward bucket seats on the Newport as it was tough for my wife and two kids to all sit up there. Also I hated there was no rods storage on the boat so I added "Montauk" Style forward console rod holders with seat backs. I had Halls make all new cushions this spring for them and also fabricate the forward bench in the photos. I designed it and worked with Lois to make sure it looked OEM. I will post the drawings I did for the forward console bench seat for you.
