Filled the gas tank up in my 18' Outrage for winter storage. Had to move the boat last night and in doing so parked it on a hill with the transom at the lowest point. Looked in the back fuel hatch this morning and was wondering where all of the water came from. To my suprise it was gas. The rubber gasket on the round plate that holds the fuel pick-up leaked and I am affraid that the whole tank cavity is full of gas! I believe that most of the gas will evaporate out. Has anyone replaced this gasket. Any good sources for the material. What type of gasket material is it. Any suggestions on getting the gas out? Thanks

Nedmack,The gasket is 60-70 durometer buna-n rubber. You may get away with a 1/16" thick piece, but if it does not seem to fill the gap correctly, use a 1/8" thick piece. Coat both sides of the gasket with #2 Permatex. Replace the phillips head screws with hex head bolts, easier to tighten without stripping the heads. Oh, almost forgot, do not use a hole cutter for the bolt holes, instead use an awl to punch through the rubber for the bolts. This allows the rubber to hug around the bolts and prevents leaks. The rubber is available from McMaster/Carr. Jim |

Nedmack, Recently, I drained my tank cavity because it was full of water. I used a fuel siphon bulb and long fuel line. I removed the rear inspection plate on the deck, inserted one end of the fuel line between the deck and the tank and into the bottom of the tank cavity. I placed a gas can on the ground with the other end of the hose in the can. Then just prime the bulb and start a siphon. I would not recommend a shop vac!! As far as a gasket, I cut a custom piece of cork gasket material with permatex gasket material on both sides. Please try to find the right rubber gasket first. This may help while you search though. Thanks for the information guys. I am thinking now that I may have a leak in the tank as well. I am going to pull the console and the big deck plate to investigate. I hate the fact that all of that gas filled up my tank cavity. I want to get that whole area cleaned up. I am going to try to fix the tank if it is in OK shape, if not then I will replace it. |
