I was getting water in the gas tank area on my 20 foot whaler. I removed the hatch, tank and water. I think the tank was replaced several years ago but was done incorrectly. I was wondering if there is a gasket that goes around the edge? I was intending to screw the hatch back down and seal the seam on deck with silicone sealant. It there any problem with doing this? There were also 3 rubber strips about the length of the tank laying loose. I am guessing they are just glued to the bottom of the tank but I am not sure where. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

I just read through earlier messages and am wondering if my 1974 model should also have foam around the tank in the gas tank cavity? When I pulled the tank the only thing holding the tank in place were the two straps on top. Thanks.

Milk, that tank is in a wet cell that gets water in it, it's designed to is supposed to drain into the sump at the starboard aft.
As far as sealing the floor seam use silicone.

Haven't seen a '74 20' fuel tank, but every other internal whaler tank compartment I've seen is designed poorly allowing standing water that will never come out. I just replaced a tank and the other threads I've read claim that the Coast Guard doesn't like foam surrounding fuel tanks any more. I put a pumpout fitting in mine so I can empty it with a hand pump. Pictures available if you wish.

The URL listed below has very good information on the silicones to be used.
