I am considering re-powering my 1975 "Madetauk" with Johnson 90-HP 2-stroke Eagle series. Does anyone out there have this setup? I would like to [hear] your comments. Ed's Marine has for $4,599, is this a good price? Thanks Bill |

Custom Marine in Georgia has almost identical prices, and only charges actual shipping prices. Ask for Will Massey, and tell him you heard about Custom Marine on this forum. He may be willing to give you a little off the price. |

A 90-HP engine is usually the right choice on a Montauk. What is the "Eagle series" engine? |

For a general discussion of the current pricing of 90-HP motors, you really should consult this recent article and thread: Best Prices On New 90-HP Motors It would be much handier if people contributed responses about current pricing of 90-HP motors to that thread. Thanks. |

I repowered an 88 with a Yamaha 90 4-stroke. Only 1500 or so difference between 2 and 4 stroke when I bought, and 100lbs. Love it. |

WE REPOWERED A 17 MONTAUCK WITH A 4-STROKE 90 HP YAMAHA AND ADDED A GAS TANK UNDER THE HELM SEAT WITH A WATER-SEPARATING FILTER OF, I FORGET, MAYBE 30 OR MORE GALLON CAPACITY. PRICES OF ENGINES ARE VARIABLE, WE GOT A GREAT DEAL BY SHOPPING AROUND THE AREA AND EVEN GOT JUNK MONEY FOR THE OLD JOHNSON 90 WHICH WOULDN'T RUN. THE PERFORMANCE AND MILEAGE ARE WONDERFUL. WHEN IDLING YOU CAN HARDLY HEAR IT RUNNING. THE MERCURY 90 IS THE SAME ENGINE SO COMPARE. THE 115 HP OUR DEALER DIDN'T WANT TO SELL US BECAUSE HE SAID THE BOAT WOULD CHINE WALK. |

I'm leaning towards 90 yamaha 2 stroke for the following reasons: Less expensive than four strokes no oil tank on transom yamaha is much lighter only 261lb. merc 303lb or johnson 343lb. here is the best price I can find delivered with binnacle control, key switch, wire harness, alum.prop, digitial tach with harness $6,373.96 out the door. Is this a good price |

In 2000 I bought a new 100hp 4 stroke for my 17 ft. Newport .They offered a 80 hp and a 100 hp . Both were the same size and weight,373 lbs. Did they make a 90 hp. 4 stroke later ? I am talking about Yamahas model # F80y and F100y . It has been a great motor, quiet, good on fuel and the last 4 years very dependable . I did install a 28 gallon tank under the console which helps with static trim. Thanks Dave |

Unfortunately for you, the Yamaha 100 4-strokes were overpriced (based on HP rating) and overrated as a 100, with Mercury selling the identical powerhead as a 90. Yamaha quickly dropped their ratings to the 75 and 90 respectively, to correspond to the Mercs. Consider that you really have a 90. |

Bill--The REPAIRS/MODS forum is interested in topics about making repairs and modifications to classic Boston Whaler boats. For advice on the current pricing of motors in the marketplace you should switch to the MARKETPLACE forum. |
